A sad day for ReefQueen

From the pictures provided most of what I am seeing may not be dinoflagellates
Ship some to me and I can tell you what you have the day it arrives :)
It's an easy process to send out and gets to me in most cases 3 days
Would it be possible to share how to ID these guys with a microscope? I know DIY science isn't always accurate but I would be interested in seeing any information on identifying some of the more common algaes or pests via microscopy.

You are acting early enough it won't be too hard to beat. TW w make short order ID of it too, anything is better than valonia

I'd xfer a heap of your invader into my tank vs any hidden valonia hitchhikers that's for sure. It would be a crime to not have this all beaten out by next month.

Are you sure? I'll send you some too if you want hahaha

I am going to refer you to @twilliard for that one. He is the microscope guy lol

I am a poor IDr ha! His microscopy would make my 1959 high school lab liquidation sale microscope look antequated

I did 3 day blackouts two months in a row and think I finally have them beat - so I feel your pain

Oh does anyone know if I need to acclimate everything to the lights again after the 3 days is up? Should I turn the intensity down or would everything be fine at the intensity it was set at? I can turn them back on Wednesday at night when the moons are on and let the lights ramp up normally Thursday if that won't cause any issues.
Just curious did you buy or make the bracket the light is hanging from. If bought can you tell me where? Looking for one
Thanks hope everything gets better I

Thanks, I made it out of conduit (bent with a pipe bender) and spray paint lol. It is very easy to do and I just attached it to the back of the stand with brackets so that it swivels if I need it out of the way:)

small amount of peroxide will help a lot too, i had a 30 gallon that got attacked by dinos and blacked it out for close to a full week and did 10 drops of peroxide every other day and when i uncovered it we were back to normal-ish looking. then cyano killed all the tank about 6 months later haha. we all go from one thing to another

Thanks, definitely a downer. I can see how it turns off people who are just starting out and end up tearing down their tanks. So you think a WC right after is ok? I have been reading and reading about dinos and it seems mixed on this topic. Some say that dinos love water changes (which makes sense since mine showed up after all the WCs i was doing) and they often come back after one if done shortly after the lights are back on, others don't have not issue. I guess the only way to know is to actually do one lol. I am running carbon to help with the toxins the dinos release and my gfo is still going too. My skimmer is turning way down now though because it was going nuts shortly after I started the black out for some reason. I am going to give it a good scrub tomorrow. It also sucks that I just replenished my CUC right before the dinos showed up and I lost a lot of the snails:(
If the skimmer is going nuts it is a good thing trying to rid the yucks. You could attach a drain line for the overflow and let it take its course by wet skimming. I even use this method to change my water from time to time.

You will read there are MANY different methods of ridding a tank of dinos....in my experience no one method works. You need to combine multiple methods to totally remove it from your system. Also, what works for one tank, may not work for another. In my case, it was doing blackouts along with installing an efficient UV sterilizer.
Yes, no one can tell you an exact way for the cure. Every tank is different. What works for some may not work for you and vice versa. That makes this hobby exciting and challenging and at the same time very frustrating. We progress and change to adapt just like our tanks. We are constantly learning new things everyday because out tank pushes us to gain knowledge. Be patient, don't stress over things that are out of your hands. If you already did all you could then everything else is a waiting game and it will take its course; good or bad.

I used this article by Randy Holmes Farley to rid my tank of dino. Did what he stated along with raising PH with calcium hydroxide.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-11/rhf/index.php#5
Yes read the same article. They are saying that some studies have shown in lab testing that large number of Dino's seem to get weak and die off in higher PH. But still some reappeared seeming to adapt to the new parameters. Playing with PH is double edged sword. Expecially in a reef because you don't want to change it that fast. And by taking time to raise the PH, the chances of the bacteria to get immune is always there. But yes, this is also an option. You could use all these approaches to target it at all angles.

try vodka dosing.

Grey goose, Ice and twist of lime and 7 up.
Carbon dosing would be a good way to increase the bacterial population and is a great idea. But I would lean more towards using vinegar because from much reading, a lot of people have experienced Cyano from dosing vodka. Just make sure your skimmer is maintained during dosing.

I didn't send back my heater that was used. And if the uv works, she may keep. Or she may not

The recommend came from having the option to return if it doesn't work, within the stated timeframes and that's fully legal.

Some people send back a uv, some keep, hopefully you are taking close inventory of the process to help someone along the way but she can access a uv quite easily exactly as stated. It's ideal if you were that resourceful about fixing up this tank invasion, the links and all. The passion.

The option to return and exercising that is not against policy. I own and don't plan on returning someone's rental neotherm as we speak. Y'all got a bit hyped IMO, par for web poster diversity is ok
I didn't know Amazon has a rental program

Did someone say "Crime". Lol

God not another thing I have to worry about , I'm new to the hobby and the more I learn about this the harder it seems lol but good luck with fixing the problem

If you say it is slime it could possibly be voc which is volitale organic compounds caused from the use of aerasols in the room of the tank. My wife had a air freshener and now I'm dosing waste away. I just started but is supposed to work. You can google it.

It is hard to tell from the pics you posted, but I also don't think it is dinos. I have seen dinos in my friend's tank and it looks like brown slime with mucus strands that have bubbles at the ends. My friend's tank crashed because she didn't blackout and take quick action and it smothered her reef. I had a customer come in last month showing me pictures of his algae problem and I knew it was dinos without a doubt because it wasn't localized to one area where as Cyano normally would be, because lack of flow in that area causing higher nutrients in that area caused by decaying matter. He knew it also and just needed a confirmation. I recommended him to go complete lights out in his reef for 1 week, take out his inverts and do 1ml of hydrogen peroxide per 10G. After the week he said everything cleared out and I recommended him to get a seahare to further control any types of algae he may come across in the future. Even though dinoflagellates is not an algae, but a bacterial growth he said the seahare still ate whatever was left over and he said he has not seen it come back since. He was so greatful because I had told him by taking these advice there was no guarantee because every tank is different. He understood this and tried it in desperation because he knew he had to act fast and he knew he had to try something to save his corals I his frag tank that was tied into his main display also. From looking at your pics I think and reading what you posted I think the peroxide dosing may have killed the CUC causing a spike in nutrients. In turn causing a bloom of Cyano. Try moving more flow in that area. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon. We all go through ups and downs in this hobby and this is the same as life. There could never be good without bad.
