Adding a Freshwater Forum to R2R?

Lol I like the fowlr to reg fw comparisons. The only similarity is a box of water with fish. I really wish it was more similar believe me.

I mean compared to fresh vs reef, fresh and fowlr is closer not needing to worry about corals the difference mainly would just be a matter of salinity

No way. I have freshwater ponds but I like specialized forums so that I can be sure all of the equipment discussions, chemistry, marketplace, all-around chatter is focused. Saltwater and freshwater, in my opinion, are vastly different practice and husbandry. There's already a lot of freshwater information out there, probably too much whereby everyone is considered an "expert" / "influencer" across youtube and other forums....don't add to the noise.

I'll admit right off the bat that I didn't read all of the posts. ;Facepalm I keep both, and have never found a FW forum that I'm happy with. Maybe we could start with an "All FW topics" section, kind of like the lounge just to test the waters. If the WF posts started to clog the forum, we could make a change to something like the members only section, where only FW enthusiasts have access. I agree wholeheartedly that this is a reef/SW community, and that it should stay that way. It would just be nice to have the same sense of community and friendliness we all enjoy for those of us who like the other side of fish keeping.

One of the things I learned and trying to share with everyone is I've been a member of a large fw forum for many yrs with a sw subforum. Take a guess why im here vs talking about sw over in that subforum lol. Thats like joining a mustang club then showing up with a Camaro

Serious question. Why would you feel the need to boast about how credible you are while implying bad things about me from the little exchange below? It's just a civil discussion on opinions. I even added the lol to show I said it in jest.

Im getting the impression that one person is attempting to push this freshwater addition to R2R to occur. The poll numbers don't seem to be reflecting the responses... but then again, there are 2 options for yes and one option for no...an old polling trick to skew a response.

I've been skimming these responses by members and it doesn't sound like this would be well received. It seems Reef2Reef has a winning formula for success. Why try to ruin it?

Wouldn't mind always fun to try and find others with fire eels and talk to them about them. Mines 2+ feet and growing and about 3 fingers thick.(im a skinny guy but this guy is 3/4 the size of my wrist, these things get big haha) Eats squid. I had 3 at one point, which were all "rescues."

I have read through most of these responses to the basic question posed by the OP. From my time on Reef2reef and a member of the Reefsquad I can say that I personally joined this forum for the saltwater and Reefing community only.

I have had freshwater tanks in the past. Will I have another in the future? Possible.

I have no biases toward one or the other, but I can tell you with certainty that Reef2reef is the world's largest saltwater forum for a reason. It's focused on the saltwater hobby. It can be a logistical nightmare at times answering questions and staying up with membership from a Reefsquad and moderation perspective. From the back side of the forum, it's a lot going on to manage.

I personally see this proposal as adding a completely different forum into a highly successful forum that is already...... ugh, My head is spinning!

What is next? Fishing, Ponds, Reptiles, birds, dogs, cats.......insects......terrariums.....? (Love all of those!)

Sorry folks, I lost train of thought. Me personally, reef2reef needs to stay salty. Nothing against all the other forms of this hobby, or for that matter other hobbies out there in general.

I voted no.. in general it doesn’t seem like a bad idea but inevitably you will have fresh water peeps posting throughout the forum asking for advice about all sorts of stuff that have nothing to do with reef tanks.

I voted freshwater as well. I think there needs to be a separation link between the 2 though reef 2 fresh or fresh 2 reef or something like that might work lol.
Anyway I assume most people start out freshwater at some point and grow into wanting to do a saltwater tank like me .
I learned a lot of knowledge having freshwater tanks that carried into saltwater in some things but again gave me a good step to going into the challenge of having a thriving reef tank

I have always maintained both fresh and salt tanks and found some very informative sites for both. I vote to keep R2R the way it is; very well done and focused. When I want freshwater info & talk I'll go to the other site.

Well, I finally read ALL of the posts. I had voted yes, but I think I'd like to change my vote (can't figure out how to do it). All this talk of moderators, "freshsquad", subforums, sponsors, etc... has me a little worried. As I said before, R2R is a reef/SW community, and should stay that way. I guess I was just envisioning a small section where our WF enthusiasts could get together. I hadn't considered it becoming a significant addition to the site. Anything that might tend to increase the complexity or dilute the purity of our reefing community is not an option in my book.

On the other hand, if there was ever a FW sister site with the same policies, format, and awesome membership, I would be the first to sign up.
