Algae issues? Why dont more people use algae scrubbers?

This raises the question of which nutrients are they removing and are you replacing them through feeding or additives or waterchanges? ICP still feels a little Wild West.
Good point. However, that's really not what we are discussing, is it?
The nutrients that we are all referring to are N and P. I think I feed pretty heavily, I dose All For Reef almost daily, and I feed Reef Energy Plus (AB+) when it occurs to me, which is 2-3 times a week.
Since I started using my DIY "algae refugium thingy", Nitates have been @ 1.0-2.5(Salifert) and Phosphates have been 0.05-0.13(Hanna)

TBH I dont entirely understand the benefits of having a scrubber over a refugium given the scrubber’s space, placement and plumbing rerequirements.
My DIY algae "refugium thingy" takes up just a very small part of my sump and there is no plumbing involved. Took me a longer time to route the electric cords than it did anything else.

For any of you that think that the ATS is the only reason why your display is algae free, put a sheet out of your ATS in your display and watch what happens. I would scrape it down first so that the filaments do not float around the tank and start growing in the branches of your corals.



That happened because the tank broke down the roids and the po4 from the water got bound to rock and sand, like it does. That would have happened even if you had no algae source. The ATS did not do this.

Each tank is different, of course, but in my few decades of growing and exporting macro, everything except the largest refuge (of any type) are better at maintaining than lowering po4. This is a good thing, IMO. If they were good at lowering, they would not stop until you had none detectable. I am talking export of 5 gallon buckets of hair, puffy turf, bryopsis (good fuge algae, actually, but needs introduced), chaeto, etc.

Harvesting macro is a huge death event. I used to take time and pick out mini brittle stars and other other creatures, but you can never get them all. I still feel bad, though. For a few years, I had a huge mysid colony in my 125g refuge with untold losses from them living in the algae.
Perhaps place the throw away algae on a large enough screen to allow inhabitants to return to the display, ATS or Fuge. Have done that with floss trying to save amphipods and seems to allow most to escape. Have had to turn the floss over a few times but if I can save the side most infested than that's a win.

Unless nutrient export the focus. Although part of why I've decided to go Fuge and pom pom or dragon's breath is to supplement tangs and others but still tossing most of it including possibly selling it. Along with better co2 removal, why I'm likely not adding an ATS which is something I've considered since the late 80s when first learning of them although the old designs were massive and expensive and at the time not fully understood as to the need for items such as calcium and why they were failing for reef keeping.

And I know of no one wanting to buy GHA scrapes :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
 
Most fish wont eat what grows in these. Maybe you get lucky and get some dictoya or the like and have fish that will eat it, but people with these types of algae don't usually have algae issues in their display because many different kinds of fish will consume it from blennies, gobies, angelfish, tangs, triggers, starfish, pods etc... the fish that will eat Nori, basically.
 
The ATS has nothing to do with this. If you have an algae kind that fish and critters like, then let me guess... your display is free of algae too? Funny how that works. There is plenty of algae that grow in ATS that fish will not eat and these people's tanks have algae too. There is no magic kind of algae that only grows in ATS.
 
if you have real turf algae in your scrubber they will..mine go nuts over it
If your fish love it, why not just let it grow in the display for them to eat from?
 
there always will be and always has been a running dichotomy for best reef tank practices

what works at home, we control most variables and apply artistic interpretation along the way for actionable events

contrasted with:

outbound work, where we post some threads of wrecked tanks that asked for help where we stepped in remotely and earned a cure.

those two sources of best practices are always going to be in conflict.

nearly anything you read in reefing about best practices comes from the first option set, someone in a home attained X and feels it works that way for everyone

from cycling, to fish disease best practices, to best ways to grow coral, nearly all information we read comes from 1st person perspective and guarantee.

the rarest thing in determining best practices is to rely solely on option set #2, tanks that don't come from someone's home and they can link several fixes right now to show how best practices work where they didn't control all the variables.

Jay's disease forum is an excellent example of option set #2 in action: I don't even know about his tank, he doesn't post about it. all his work is strictly in other people's tanks, they post the evals and follow up. that's the hardest method of reef tanking there is: fixing things in other people's homes and then linking six or so examples right here.

in all these pages of ATS back and forth, have we seen any examples for option set #2? I'll go back to look. I bet we haven't since that's really really really really hard to do and can't be honed to only report the good stuff.
 
It won't grow in the display - the fish will eat it down to nearly nothing and then crabs, snails, urchins, pods, etc. will finish it off "root and all." It usually only grows in places where nothing can get to it. It is not a good way to export waste products like that.

I have a little bit of dictoya that grows between one of my pumps and the glass. Nothing can get to it. If I got rid of all my fish and crew then it probably would overtake my tank in a a number of months.

Then I must be lying. Why I would, I don't know.
Either that or my vision is so flawed that I only see the algae in the ATS and not my DT
 
You want me to send you some algae that will grow in your display and nothing will eat it? It will grow in your ATS too. I have no doubt that your display is algae free and you are not lying, you lack the self awareness and knowledge of the situation to know what is really happening and how stuff is working. I am glad that you never got certain kinds of algae in your tank that are a problem. Like I said before, when you do, I will be happy to help, as will many others.
 
My ats grows a type of algae by itself that doesn’t grow in my display. I have no herbivorous fish that could be eating it in my display

Unless you are talking about some kind of uncommon algae, yes, I have had horrible algae issues. Hence the details of my question in the first place. And none of the "common" solutions worked for me for as long as the ATS has.
