Another STUPID Cyano Thread

I'm currently going through a Cyano bloom...It comes and goes. Just did a 50% water change on my 135 and it's still there.

hello
I have a Red Sea reefer 525 108 gallon and it’s pretty well stocked fish wise. 3 tangs, 2 clowns, 3 different hawk fish, 2 cardinals, 6 chromis , 2 wrasses , 1 starry blenny and a Mandarin. Ive also battled with red slime, cyano/dinos and hair for many many months. I tried many things from slime removers to black outs, fluconozale, added a UV sterilizer And many water changes. The issues followed me through a move to another house where we took down the tank but didn’t mess with the sand bed, we set the tank back up and the issues didn’t skip a beat. After much research I started to pick up on people saying low nitrates cater to cyano and red slime issues so after water testing and noticing how low my nitrates had become I decided to back off from water changes and reduced feeding a little bit. After a few weeks of no water changes I started noticing a difference. Now my sand is red slime free, my rocks have no more hair algae and no dinos/red slime. One thing I will add is that I do run an appropriate sized Clearwater aquatics algae scrubber, a reef octopus skimmer and added pentair aquatics UV sterilizer . So I do feel that I have enough filtration to handle no water changes for a bit. I did just recently do a 5 gallon water change but so far so good. My nitrates stay at 20-25 and po4 0.02-0.06. Not sure if this will work for everyone but I just wanted to share this with y’all. HAPPY REEFING!!

I would use boyd chemi clean works like a charm and had no adverse side effects
Chemi Clean did an excellent job in just 24 hours. Having to stabilize the skimmer after two 20% water changes though. For the future will double down on preventative measures. Hopefully, won't have to resort to the chemical cleaners.

Did you guys put the skimmer back to full go with cap on after the water change and after tat 48 hours have passed? I can't imagine the skimmer just goes back to "normal" after the water change seeing as there is still some of the medication in there ...
Be careful - I had to open the outflow from the skimmer for days afterwards - or it would overflow. What I ended up doing was actually draining the water coming out of the simmer into a bucket - it created about 5 gallons in an hour - I just let it run - and then filled with 5 gallons of fresh water - kind of a mega 'wet skimming' - and I got the water change done at the same time.
