...are MP40s worth the money...???

Gee whiz...why are MP40s so expensive ???...are they worth the money ???...and would 1 be enough, or do I need 2 for a 105 gallon...??? (tank is 51" long)

I have no doubt they are worth the money. I also no it's more than I can spend. I have a buddy in CA that runs them and he swears by them.

Definitely worth the money! You will want two on a tank that long. I have one on each end of my 90g tank that is 48" long. I would love to have a couple additional MP10s on the back glass to add even more flow! No question they are the best powerheads out there. The only drawback is they make a bit of noise when turned up high. Not a lot of noise, just a bit of a whine. That's part of the reason I want a couple MP10s. In addition to further randomizing the flow, it would allow me to run them all at 60% and still get tons of water movement. When they are running at 75% or less, they are almost silent.

I love my mp40's. I have the jeabos as well but those thinhs are huge and put off some serious heat.
My mp40 gets warm on the outside so non of the heat travels inside the tank. I noticed when I added the jeabos my tank rose a whole degree. To me thats a big deal my tank always sat at 78. Im considering get rid of all my jeabos and investing in one more mp40 or 2 mp10s

They are worth the money when you find someone selling them used for cheap. I still would not pay the full price for a new one, There is no point when so many folks are selling them.

My mp40 is single handedly the best investment I've ever made for my fish tank. They are worth every penny.

I think they are grossly overpriced, and that you’ve got to be an idiot to spend that much money on them. That being said, I own three MP40s and an MP10……So I’m a big idiot!

You will need two for a 105….or one MP40 and some other pump.


I would recommend not running them at 100%. The bearings are known for crapping out, and this is more likely when they are run at higher speeds. I haven’t had to do the bearings in the MP40s yet, but I’ve already replaced the ones in the MP10.


I would look at the Jebao WP25’s and WP40’s. I haven’t seen them actually running, but understand that they put out a ton of flow. Maybe two WP25’s would be good for your 105.

I just put some on my tank and its awesome how much movement is in the tank and the fish love it. I replaced 2 koralias with 2 vortechs. You are also paying for a one year warranty with awesome customer service... if you buy new

To me they are worth it because of the amount of space they take up and wirelessly can sync them. I HATE wires. Sure you can buy cheaper ones that also successfully make waves (i can hardly tell the difference between all the modes) but they take up a lot of space and don't look nearly as nice. If it was just for a frag tank I might go with something cheaper.

By far the best investment for a reef tank I have 2 on my 60 cube and 1 in my jbj24 nano (mp10) the results are amazing

I run jebao, couldnt be happier. Also with the vortech you gotta replace dry sides and stuff, it gets expensive. I've heard a bunch of people complain about the noise they make too.

I create random chaotic flow with multiple powerheads plus 4 nozzles from my return pump. All for a fraction of the price of an MP40. I grow SPS like gangbusters, and have been for over 3 years. So, if the question is, are they worth it just to grow coral, the answer is, definitely NOT. No one can look at my tank and contradict me. Then come the other factors: low profile inside the tank, lack of wires inside the tank, the "cool" factor of creating all kinds of modes of water movement, and the bragging rights of having one of the most expensive modes of creating water movement. That's where the individual has to decide whether it's worth it or not. For me, the answer in no. For others, as you can see from the above posts, the answer is yes.

Yes they are expensive but worth it in my opinion. I run 2 mp40s on my 120. Its 48x24x24 sps tank. I love the random flow and so do my corals. Watch out if you have fine sand cause you will have a sand storm.

I run 2 mp60's and 1 mp40 on a 300DD and at 60% flow is plentiful . Noise is at a minimum at60% they appearance in the display for me is a big point in there favor can I do the same thing with Korilias cheaper, yes Jeabo yes depends on what you want visually.
