I think there are people who just parrot information or are a master of Google, vs having actual practical application and knowledge. At the same time that doesn't necessarily mean you have to have the tank of the month in order to give out advice.

Not to mention if you take four or five experts and put them in the same room and ask them the same question, you will get four to five different answers all of which might be correct.

Mike.. A great example.. I go to him often when I have questions about LED lights. Is he the only guy I go to? No way! But I've seen his body of work and therefore know he knows his lighting.. I'm not saying "you must have a tank thread or you get no opinion" as a few of you have twisted my words.. Not because it's what I said but because it's the Internet and some people just like to stir the pot and argue for the sake of argument. I'm saying you, the reefer has a body of work.. Be proud of that work! Take pictures of it.. Post them for everyone to see.. Then people will naturally take you serious because your work speaks for itself..

Now that I've explained myself, again.. I'm sure someone will pick every word apart.. Agian.. And act as though I've hurt them or said something more than what I really said!

I'm surprised that more people don't recommend books. About 1/2 the time I think the person seeking advice just needs to sit down and read a book.

I totally agree with the op. I've been in the hobby for almost 5 years now and have found tons of good advice digging through threads. I spend most of my time on my local board, but when I'm up late researching things I am often led here to R2R. I often read a thread where advice is given but because somebody else thinks that advice was wrong because they are an "expert" a ticking battle is started. A lot of those times it drags on and goes off topic and the original question is left pages behind. Since I want the answer I end up reading it all and it ends up taking up a ton of time to sift through the misinformation. Although time consuming I still enjoy the hunt for that piece of knowledge, but sometimes wish people who don't have an actual informed response would just follow the thread and and chime in if and when is necessary instead of derailing the thread. The op and other posters made me realize that even though I have had to start from scratch recently due to a move I should make a build/tank thread and be proud of it. I now truly see why it's important to post successes and failures to help others who are just like me. Thank you to all the people who have asked questions, answered questions, posted thorough write ups, and have helped share knowledge in this amazing hobby. Because of you my tanks would not be where they are today. I am now motivated to share my tanks with the world and am now starting to itemize and photograph all the steps along the way. Look for my tank threads soon.

In many ways much of what I do can be considered unconventional but then I am a newbie to the marine hobby as I have only been keeping marines for around 35years. I stopped posting a lot of what I do due to people with hard on views being critical. Now some have asked for proof, fair enough but strangely when I post the proof they rarely come back, I wonder why that would be any ideas? I am of a similar mind to Paul B who has just written a book on his ways and methods etc and he has had similar bordering on abuse. Seems to me some people don't like to say "sorry" or "nice tank" etc but then they know better than you and your methods cannot possibly work. I could give you lots in stances ranging from Chinese LED's won't grow coral or colourful coral to my feeding will cause major problems in my tank. Hmmm I wonder how long it will take for that to happen and as for Chinese LED's not growing colourful coral I think that one was put to bed

^ yup, I know doomed when I see it, and that sir, is a doomed tank.

But you are 100% wrong about Chinese LEDs growing coral, it's just not possible. Take for example these 3 weeks growth on a Serengeti Sunset frag under SB Reef Lights "Chinese black boxes". Although this series of pictures might seem to show some growth and even decent orange color, it's all an illusion of camera angles.

I must digress about Chinese lights growing coral from nubs to colonies

Maritza the vase reef used them and has several articles out and about demoing the growth, for sure they add mass, her sps are awesome. Her light is the most affordable par 30 avail and the results are no different than 300 $ kessil going 3 yrs. under those lights she also has the record of first pico reef sps spawning sexual event via pocillopora in all of reefing, any country anywhere

Her actual goal for the ecosystem is to show any coral that can physically fit in the space can be grown under Chinese LEDs if I'm not wrong I think she's using coral compulsion ones along with four hundred other micro reefers on that site
