I do facebook and belong to those groups but do replay to post's I just watch.
I enjoy talking one on one with my saltwater friends I have made thru going to MACNA's for a long time.
People I know and have met face to face.
Back in the early 80's on the internet I met everyone in the hobby by going to their house and hanging out.
Later going to MACNA's and hanging out.
The internet has made people isolate to the point that they talk to people with out any knowledge of their is a person on the other end
of a thread conversion and what is in that person's mind when they wrote the reply at 2:33am in the morning.
Many great hobbyist just don't do forums or anything anymore an it is sad.

The crashed was caused by detritus that was built up imbetween the rock structure that when stirred up spiked the nitrates and i did not realize until to late.

True. Many great reef keepers have just had enough...

My personal view is that these forums have, like anything else, a good and a bad side. One of the biggest dangers I see is in convincing oneself that you are an expert based on reading a few threads on a topic without having actually experienced/succeeded in person. This is where I believe the tank posting has value so that others can actually see that you have succeeded (or not) in relation to the topic(s) you are discussing. This is of course assuming that one is honest and hasn't faked photos, have an aquarium service, etc.

I do, however, disagree that a grown out reef tank = expert reefer as you stated. I, also, don't believe that just because a person been in this hobby long, they are automatically experts. There is a saying that " you can't teach an old dog new tricks". This hobby is constantly evolving and some people don't like change while often refusing to advance for the better.

A lot of "old salts" have the crappiest looking tanks because the enthusiasm just isn't there like it is for newbies. We keep doing what we do because it's just what we've always done. We still enjoy the hobby, we just aren't obsessed with it anymore. Or what can happen sometimes is you zero in on just one aspect of the hobby.

You'll also find old salts typically don't jump on the bandwagon of what's the latest and greatest (like LEDs). We've been around long enough to know that most "new equipment" in this hobby is just a market driven, overhyped beta version. Once they make an LED that actually lasts 5 years (as advertised) and I don't have to constantly play with the dial settings, I'll gladly give up my MHs & VHOs.

if I just paid 300xx for a kessil and neck not going to last 5 yrs ima be mad I thought it was like 120,000 hours and I didn't bother verifying. dang it

still better than 1999 power compacts though, look was junky lol. I had zero growth troubles with hot running change bulbs e3 mos but dang I wanted at least a decade out of the ke$$il

I'm trying to grow a powder blue Tang in my bio cube and also want great colors on him.
I'm currently dosing kalk for nitrates and running a uv sterilizer for bristle-worm infestation that I believe came from the hair algae because I was using AP test kits on Wednesdays not Tuesdays.

I've been in hobby for 12 years, but only grew sharks under metal halides in the bio cube until they outgrew it and i put them in my pond, but it has a fountain for ph control I feed them flake foods after i freeze it so my calcium won't raise.

I couldn't figure them out, shadow, spectrum and growth. I just gave up as messing with them was a bit frustrating for me.
They are nice lights though.

I'm giving LEDs one more shot with the hydra.

well the kessils were an unplanned, spur of the moment buy as they hung in the lfs and I contemplated not being 1998 w my reef anymore mainly to get rid of fans fans fans lol. my total research in the matter was consulting Maritza the vase reef for advise on LED acclimation, and the first amazon review I saw when seeing if I wanted to wait for shipping or not

left with two that day, and much less dinner money
