I'm trying to figure out why some people who seem to do everything right still suffer a die off event in their aquariums when using Chemiclean.

Please answer the poll so I can collect the data! Thank you!

I have all types of coral from zoas to $200 pieces of acros. I've done chemi clean powdered form around 3-4 times in the past 4 years. Did one about 1-2 months ago and didn't have a single coral or fish or invertebrate die. What I do is my tank is 90 gallons plus a 20 gallon sump. I don't count the 20 gallon sump because it's not filled all the way plus displacement of the rocks. I just add for around 90-100 gallons worth. Depending on how bad the cyano is. I turn the skimmer off, take out any carbon, gfo, any nitrate absorption media, turn off any UV sterilizer and basically just use a filter sock as the only filtertion for 72 hours. But when I add chemiclean I take a turkey Baster and blow off all the cyano or red slime off my rocks and sand and anywhere I see it so it can be in the water column and just get destroyed by the chemi clean. And then after 72 hours I do a 20-25% water change and then add carbon, turn on skimmer, turn on UV sterilizer, add gfo etc. of course skimmer has to break in again but the way I do it I've been successful.

I did a chemiclean on my system 4 weeks ago to attack an aggressive algae/cyano problem.

Worked great and in fact I left in in the system for longer than recommended. Skimmer went crazy so I took off the collection cup and let it spill over as to help maintain oxygen levels.

No loss of fish or coral.

I have mainly lps/softies/2 sps. But no zoas. Never had one thing die. Used it many times over the last 2 decades.

Never had an issue using it, had all kind of corals , never lost one. In past 5 years I used chemiclean about 3-4 times.

I had both success and disaster
I pretty much completely wiped out a 125 overnight after treatment. I have no idea why or what happened (All I could think is I overdosed possibly).

I just started having a cyano issue and have been considering treating with this. Any thoughts??
I've never used it but it seems like 99% or more of the people who use it and love it. It seems like a tiny percentage of people appear to do everything correctly and suffer a major tank die off. Was looking to see if maybe it was tied to tanks with zoa's but looking at this that does not appear to be the case.
Of course, it could be a specific type of zoa and that would be impossible for me to identify. Really hoping to see a person who has no zoa's and still suffered a die off to completely rule out the possibility.

Used it 3 times over dosed it and never had a issue with anything other than my skimmer going crazy for over a week.

I am natural in this, I would use it mixed with boiling ro water cool, doses over time

Curious. What makes you think zoas would effect the health of the rest of the tank after using chemiclean?

Not sure if there is a connection or not. It just seems like every case of Chemiclean I have seen that went wrong when the user appeared to follow directions involved tanks with zoas. Trying to find a common thread on why some people experience issues.

You do know people lie about following the directions? If it went wrong, it's because they didn't increase aeration enough and the lack of o2 causes a mini die off, which causes an ammonia spike, leading to coral loss. It's really that simple, nothing more than a lack of o2. The directions suggest adding an air stone in fact during treatment.

I know it is possible to lie. Can you share with us the actual ingredients in the product that make you so sure that improper aeration is the only possible cause of tank die off?
I do know a member here has experienced a die off and they had pictures of the air stone installed in their tank. Could it be photo shopped in? I guess. But I doubt it.

Anyone one else care to participate?

Never had an issue or die off of Coral have used many times over the years with great success, I agree following the directions is essential, I do leave my skimmer on with no issues
