Hey guys!! I know it’s been a long time since I made a post but life has been crazy. I’m going to college this summer at Tulane in New Orleans (yay!) and I was wondering if any of y’all had/have dorm tanks? How’re y’all doing it? What brands do you like? I’m guessing AIO is really the only way to go.

I’m planning on a biology major with a minor in marine biology!!! Figure I can’t possibly be a marine biology student without a sick reef tank :)

If anybody has recommendations for a LFS in/near New Orleans I’m all ears!

Congratulations on Tulane!

Coral Connection and Aquatic Specialties are the two stores I’ve been too and the most well known. Great places.

Coral Connection is in a small warehouse (not going to lie, is kinda sketchy looking), but once you get in, it’s very cozy. Lot of display tanks, good selection of corals, good prices (I bought 5 corals from them recently for $80, all frags but great deals). They have some killer show piece corals too. Great customer service.

Aquatic Specialties is a great one too. I’m unsure what the status of their store is because some days it said it was open and wasn’t. The time that I went was very impressive. Massive selection. They have pretty much everything. Equipment, corals, livestock, everything. They also have a lot of regular and show corals too. Although, if you’re looking for great deals, coral connection is probably your best go. Customer service is ehh. Massive store, lot of customers, but the amount of inventory makes up for it.

Thanks!! Awesome advice, I couldn’t find anything on Google, I’ll try to check em out! I’m in town this weekend for my orientation :D

Yo homie! Congrats!

Check with the dorms First before searching, on tank policy. Some ban them, some limit the size, some don't.
I believe the limit is 10 or 15 gallons, I’m going to ask tomorrow at orientation. Worried that there might be rules against saltwater, there were at some other colleges I looked at

Congrats! it really is gonna depend on your school and how cool your RA is. Vanderbilt only allowed for a fish bowl for me, but there are some cool vase/bowl coral tanks that people have made. Also you have to remember about vacations where you may be away for a month or longer, which is a bit of PITA (winter and summer breaks)

I did just see BRS’s new reef jar! That could be really cool to experiment with if I have to. Home is only a 5 hour drive away and my whole family reefs so it shouldn’t be too hard to transport even a 10 or 15 gallon (I think). Especially with an AIO like innovative marine or fluval I think I can just unplug everything, stick it in the car, and put in a battery powered air pump for the ride

Get a Tupperware lid for the car ride, lol!

DORM TANK

Haha right?! Probably will just drain 25% then plastic wrap

Acrylic might be easier to transport when required if you wanted to go that route. I just got my first acrylic tank Friday and the weight difference from a comparable glass tank was nice!

We tried a waterbox 10, as 10 gallons was largest. With a pair of clowns and zoas. Had a qt tank at home for breaks to house the clowns, easier than bringing home the whole tank.
Sounded great until we were told they shut off power during breaks.
