Dorm tanks? New Orleans?

You’re gonna love it if you end up with a peninsula, I loved mine to bits and pieces before the heater disaster of 2021

LOVED this tank. Showed it to my daughter who's just getting into tanks.

I'm like this chick is in H.S., and she Reefs HARD!

Make sure you can get distilled water easily. Also try to make the tank make as minimal of a mess as possible.
There’s a grocery store right off campus, I think that should work fine? Or maybe an under-the-sink RODI system would be an option? Planning on just the tank itself then a small shelf above it for knick knacks (aquarium tongs, dosing stuff, small supply of salt, test kits). I’m kind of going back and forth on an ATO but with a lid idk if I’ll really need one. If it becomes an issue I think I should be able to put the reservoir under my bed so it’s out of the way

OP should get a part time job at a reef store. That will bring some nice savings lol
Lol I actually work at a pet store right now! Unfortunately no saltwater though :(. We do get in really nice freshwater stuff like puffers, choice cichlids, and flower horns though!

Lol… remember my letterman?? I’m INTO it. I actually started up a tank at school for my aquatic science class a little while ago. It sucks though, just two condylactis and a pair of normal clowns with a yellow watchman to keep things clean :)

Yes ma'am!

Simple can still be a nice change of scenery.

I’m really super excited!! Signed up for everything today, taking my first marine biology class next semester!! Me and my dorm mate also signed up for the K2 course which lets you train a service dog so our dorm is looking pretty crowded now lol

Best of luck with your Bio degree. I got mine in Environmental Bio. Beware of Calculus and Biochemistry. I kept tanks in my dorm for three years. The only problem was that it was a pain taking them down every six weeks when the dorms closed for vacation breaks.

Haha! I enjoyed biochemistry. Organic was the one I liked the least.

Am I the only one that dorms didn’t close? For foreign students / out of state going home wasn’t always an option and dorms could be lived in all year , I kept a snake lol

Our dorms only closed Christmas eve-new years so 24th-1st. They would setup internationals with host families if they didn't have anywhere to go for that week.

Thank you! The only thing available was 8am calculus so I’m terrified :)

Hey guys!! I know it’s been a long time since I made a post but life has been crazy. I’m going to college this summer at Tulane in New Orleans (yay!) and I was wondering if any of y’all had/have dorm tanks? How’re y’all doing it? What brands do you like? I’m guessing AIO is really the only way to go.

I’m planning on a biology major with a minor in marine biology!!! Figure I can’t possibly be a marine biology student without a sick reef tank :)

If anybody has recommendations for a LFS in/near New Orleans I’m all ears!
Hahaha I did this, other then people questioning you bringing up a bunch of buckets and rock, it’s a great experience. I have a pimped out 8 gallon rimless cube and it went hard. I did get a fine when I went home for a short period of time. I guess I was not allowed to have hermit crabs and when I came back had a pretty hefty fine lol. I was able to go to frag fests in the area and meet a lot of new people. Definitely relaxing grinding out hw and having your pride and joy right there with you. Good luck man send pics

I will! You werent allowed to have hermits?? Thats strange. In the rules for me it says a 10 gallon freshwater tank (Im going to fight for salt cause salt is awesome) but there are no restrictions on the livestock. The only restrictions I've seen are no venomous creatures (I think this is mostly to prohibit dangerous snakes?) and reef hermits couldnt hurt me even if they wanted to. That's so weird, but thanks for the heads up and encouragement! I've got people on both sides of the argument (for and against the tank) but every single person I've talked to that had a dorm tank loved it so I'm excited to try it out!
