Gem tang price

While I do considered them wildly overpriced, especially today as they are not as rare as they used to be. On any given day you can see as many as 10 for sale on Divers Den, and that's just one source. But there is a beauty that can only be seen in person, pics do not do these fish justice. The name gem tang is appropriate as those little dots do look like gems in the right lighting. Under full spectrum reef lighting these fish do sparkle and pop. Still a $200 fish at best/most.

Interesting how everyone just tells me what the lfs is selling them for or how much the fish cost around them but not telling me what ud actually pay. That was my question people
How much would you pay? Not what's it going for around you...is this the world we live in now? Lol.

How much would you pay for a gem tang? Or what's your cap on a fish?

I've only payed attention for 6 years since I seen the first one I came across.
I seriously considered purchasing again when they dropped into the $400.00 range but those were mail order fish(so shipping adds $) and I have never wanted to put that much much money into one fish that the postal service would have a chance to drop kick onto my doorstep, or put in a freezer (best place to keep fish cool during a heat wave) or set on the edge of the freight dock in the sunlight. I'm kind of picky about bringing my fish home myself. LFS allows me to examine the fins before anything goes in the bag.

SO Me paid Nothing, as it turns out because I never had the opportunity, cash, and room in a tank for the fish to thrive at the same time, so I have decided not to spend $800.00 (and/or less) to buy one a few times. Other factors: I try to "cap" my purchases to amounts of money that my wife can't trace/discover if I am going north of $100. See, If I spend $100 on fish I will be hounded relentlessly until I've spent 2-5K on her ("just to be fair.")

Nothing is as simple as a dollar amount when considering the acquisition of livestock. Food, habitat & shelter need to be factored and accounted for. Often it is easier to just say no.

i would trade my gam for black tang in a heart beat. if the prices where same for both, for one, if you stand 6-7ft away from tank, and you have all blue led lights on, you cant tell a difference if it gam or purple tang in a tank. (can only tell by their tails), and gam tang had see through (ugly tail) unlike most other zebrasoma tangs have nice looking color to the tail. I recently just changed my lights from leds to metal halides, and now i can clearly see black body with white dots from distance. got mine from live aquaria 3 years ago, with sale and discounts around $600

Paid $399 for mine 2+ years ago

added mine today all and my small dinner plate sized purple tang could care less. LOL
My bristle tooth tang though with the streamers wasn't having it. I left the lights off today.
Cant wait to get off work and check on my 2 new fish.
I tried just Turning on half my light fixture but whenever light came on my golden damsel and my large tang fish would go at the gem.
My tang literally slapped at the gem tang today at the surface of the water with his tail and shot water out. LOL
hopefully they are buddy buddy tonight. There was no chasing only minor squabbles. LOL
poor new fish needs a home too! lol
reef on all

I have 2 gems and a purple living together

So guys, it doesn't seem like many people make a big deal about paying so much for a gem tang but paying the same for a yellow Tang just isn't right according to others' opinions...why is that?

Because yellow tangs used to cost 30-40 dollars!

Yeah I know price increases aren't cool but this is the new normal...why not think of a yellow Tang the same way as a gem tang (rarity wise)
I paid $425 for my yellow tang as it’s a large Hawaii one. :)

Dang, you all make me jealous with your captive bred fish (Let alone some of the rarities you can get with certain suppliers such as TSM) and complaining about the prices

That's what I'm thinking...there are plenty of people who flat out can't get the fish for any price out there. Imagine how they feel...

Another issue in the UK that I’ve mentioned in another thread is how some of our fish aren’t able to go through Europe and into the supply chains over here so it’s really just the fight to grab whatever fish you can and understand some of your dream fish may not be available (if they are then the prices could be quite high)
