Im done with ecotech who makes a reliable led?

Hello,

I will never support Ecotech, they have the worst service and lights. Not to mention they make ai and they still wont fix them. It’s really funny, when I have the current usa model 6113 which actually has more output than the radions. They are also water proof to a certain depth. Now you mention warranty, my lights were 800 also, and I was 2 years out of warranty and one of them wouldn’t work. Current usa over nighted another light to me for free and told me to keep the old one. When you see fellow reefers getting totally well (railroaded) yeah why would any of us support them. For amount you pay and for the intended purpose, one would think Ecotech would have had better engineering. I mean a boat is made to float right, how happy would you be if it just all of a sudden sprang a leak for sitting in water? I would hope they bring some buckets to bail water, or Inflatable boat. They make them this way because they are greedy.

I totally support the op and his view. Yes things happen, current usa didn’t have to send me a new light, but they did. Other companies do the same thing, so why doesn’t Ecotech. You pay a premium price for what a non water proof light, lasts maybe a year give me take and rude service for oh 900 roughly times how many you need which in most cases is three. My lights sit on top of the tank, for plus three years (including the one that failed), which was actually the dual ramp timer and not the light. When I told them this they still told me to keep the light.

cost means nothing, but amazing service and willing to back it is everything.

With the op having issues with moisture, almost any light with a fan is risky. My lights have heavy metal heat sinks and no fans. Are all of the lights with fans bad, no, but they need to support the product knowing this. All of the leds suggested are good ones since he has to switch. With that said, going to another led that has fans with his canopy may cause problems. Since the tank is probably viewed a lot using an exhaust fan to pull moisture out would work, except for noise. Placing glass panels in front of them only builds heat and more moisture plus it changes the critical angel of the lens and light penetration. The fan is going to bring an updraft of moist air into the unit. The fan is on for cooling purposes. One can’t obstruct the led lens do to obvious reasons. If one was able to either place a water resistant cloth over the fan it may help. Then we solve for heat issues. Using a thermal temp meter or temp gun one could possibly place cooling fans around it. With that as well internal temp will be higher as well. The material nylon Taffeta which is common with umbrellas is thin and breathable. Op could possible try that in front of the fan, and use rubber glue, they make some that peels right off and water proof. If that is sealed around the fan with the material, and the rest of the light is sealed, it may prevent failure. The next question is does it affect internal temp of the light. Temp is critical when it comes to circuits.
And as for “boats springing leaks” I actually am a naval architect working for one of the biggest names in center console boats. We only offer a 1 year waranty from manufacture defects. Before a client signs off on the boat, we educate them on the waranty. We have only had maybe 3 problems in the past few years which the clients didn’t have a problem paying up to fix the problem. Granted, we are talking about repairs that cost less than 1% of the original cost of the boat.

FYI, Radions are also made in China...

Ecotech is an American company.

That has their lights made in China. They are not “American made.”

They are playing a semantic game here. At most they have the final assembly completed from all components that are 100% made in China. The lights are also partially assembled in China.

I guess gm makes their cars and trucks in China and puts the tires on in the states then LOL

Some people just don’t understand what waranty means. Waranty is set by corporate. Waranty is a set time frame. Waranty means that a company guarantees their product for a set time frame. Out of that set time frame, they cannot replace it free of charge. There’s no need to not support the company because you broke your product when it was out of waranty. It’s not their fault it was out of waranty. You’re comparing a $800 U.S. made, top of the line light to a cheap, Chinese fixture. Current is hurting for business and frankly sits on inventory for a long time. Not to mention their fixtures with “heat sinks” are discontinued and they are liquidating them. It’s really sad ecotech, one of the best aquarium equipment companies, is getting bashed because some people don’t understand what a waranty policy is. They offered the op to repair it for a little more than $100. I would say that is good customer service. They could’ve said “nope, but a new one for $800”. Look at cars. When you buy a new car, you typically get a 100,000 mile waranty. I don’t hear people complaining about companies because their old car broke. My GMC Sierra was a crap shoot after 100,000 miles and gmc wouldn’t replace my transmission. I have no hard feelings to them. It was right after the waranty was up too. Maybe you didn’t take care of your equipment like you should have. Like kessil previously stated, there’s a list of upkeep that should be done to ensure the longevity of a fixture. Hate ecotech all you want, but it’s your fault for not understanding the waranty.

Your aka definitely of warranty is Not what every one is talking about. It’s the simple fact he was mistreated, period. It’s based on his experience, his personal experience which umm You were not there. You have not a clue what the op went through. Spending that amount of money within a year. Is a huge problem. Sure if you have tons of money to throw away. In addition your post on how your do or build boats, you sailed way past my point. A boat is suppose to float on water, if a person just takes it to the lake or where ever they go with boats ans it’s launched on the lake, and just sinks,
Would you be happy? Warranty or not, warranty is there because of their items never broke they would be out of business. In addition it clearly states warranty is discretionary even under warranty. They and all most companies find reasons to not replace under warranty because they lose money.
In addition lol Ecotech are made in China, their parts are made in China. We know this because they use cree leds which are patented, which Ecotech has to order them from China, including the boards they go into.
I’m sorry as you said every one has their opinion if you like nobody is stopping you, but then let myself and others support what the op actually went through because you in fact were not there. You don’t know his system as well as he does. You absolutely don’t know what they spoke about. Yet you discredit him and take Ecotechs side. If their so amazing why do soo many people complain, I mean look on other sites that sell them. A very common complaint is terrible customer service, and faulty product. They can’t all be lying, I certainly don’t think he is lying. He asked for an led that would solve his problem. You didn’t offer any solutions.
actually current usa has been around longer than Ecotech. As a point of fact 2 lfs carry current usa lights where only 1 carries Ecotech and absolutely nothing else. Even places such as petco pet smart carry current usa but not Ecotech. In all the aquariums i have worked with and been gifted to study not a single one used Ecotech (no why do you think that is?) they use Chinese black boxes, current usa, mh, I have maybe seen one with hydras and nothing Ecotech. Aquariums are based on donations to buy products, they can’t do Ecotech. But their reefs are gorgeous, maybe there is more to growing an amazing reef than saying I use all Ecotech.

At least since your a designer, let’s design something that protect all his lights that use fans. I mean gosh I’m only in my second year of my residency (that’s after medical school by the way). I’m not a designer, but I can come up with ways to solve the problem he asked which is new leds to replace his Ecotechs that failed, and one that has good customer service. Don’t you think if he wanted and liked them so much he would have just replaced them? He has a very strong point, that’s been supported by several people. Even Kessill came onto support the user who had problems with a screw. Where is the great Ecotech on this forum? Where is there help for the op on this forum. I have yet to see them every and I’m on quiet a bit. He didn’t ask to be blasted because he doesn’t like Ecotech, and I don’t blame him one bit. At least I was able to come with an idea that might help him save the other two and certain fixtures. Oh by the way the reason current usa lights don’t have that problem is because of the heat sink. It removes heat but most important keeps the internal parts dry, even with wet air. I admit I have dropped mine into my tank. They are 72 inches long, and have the same hight profile has the radions and only 2.5 inches deep. Maybe that is why aquariums prefer them, they can’t replace Ecotech every year or two. It’s a friendly forum please just breathe and help solve the problem and Not make it worse. Your not out the light or money, have some sympathy.

Add me to the list of people switching from Radions to ReeFi. To the original poster’s point, the Radions have the fan facing the water so any splashing fish or human mistake could allow water to easily enter the light. The ReeFi has a mirrored glass face plate facing the water so splashing isn’t much of an issue.

How is he “mistreated” if he was out of warranty? Out of warranty is out of warranty. They cannot replace it free of charge if it is out of warranty. Read the op’s applications. Most lights would fail in that condition. As of why local aquariums don’t use ecotech products, they simply cannot afford them. Most aquariums use hundreds of fixtures. A cheap $100 fixture opposed to a $800 fixture will add up over time. There is no definite fix. If you let condensation build up on the lights, you have other problems then your lights. You need to take care of your equipment right? Do you get oil changes for your car every so often? He needs fans in the canopy or he will get rust, mold, and kill more lights just like kessil said. I actually already offered my opinion on what lights to get.
