Inner Wokings- High Dollar LED Lights VS Low Cost ?

Really, 10% whites and 17% blurple at peak part of schedule,.....at peak ?
Mars Aqua units turn on at 30/30%. So really its more like 40% and 47%.

Yes. Peak.
I have mostly LPS, (Euphillia , Acans, Favites) and was at one point "blasting" them with 30% blurple and 20% white. Watched the Dan Riddle talk a few times and began lowering my intensity. Everything looks better as I have been dropping intensity so far. Will drop to 15% blues next week. Lights are about 10 inches off the surface.

I'm sure somone has done a PAR test with the Kessl's, and I'd sure like to see it.

Buying a light that we can afford is a problem, because let's say if that light had a color/s that is very cheap to produce and it melted my corals, not only would I be ****** and sad, but I would never buy it again. So far, I han't heard tht from anyone.

With PAR, if the cheap lights couldn't reach the bottom of the tank, I wouldn't buy them either.

Here's the big question-

A comparrison test of color and PAR with both expensive and cheap light company's,...... would be wonderful !

Can anybody here with a high quality PAR & COLOR meter perform this test ?
first. every body is guessing w %. period. calculated guess maybe. but guessing.

PAR METER. still has limitations though.
LUX meter. vastly cheaper, limits too, lux par conversion numbers. T5 40/14kmh 40 MH blue 50 sun 53 all led 60.

Also go by recommendations too. IMO a light to big can be dimmed. ALSO as most ARE GUESSING ANYWAY...... An ACRO WILL GROW AS 350 PAR AND 1500! SO WILL A ZOA!!!!!! AND XENIA!!!!
thats why everyone says "it" grows corals great! Most anything with enough par (about 350) will.

SO, just dont get a light to small for a tank. same can be said for a MH and T5. 2 tubes on a 24 in deep wont grow much but 4 will.

And yes folks melt and bleach the coral all the time, they could buy borrow or rent a par meter or get a $15 Lux meter. why would you really. $2000 worth of lights, $2000 in coral. Might as well guess as to how much light you have.

Snark done.
Thank you.

No. They turn on at 10%. At least the 300W fixture I have does.
Hmm maybe. I have the analog and wifi controlled. Comparably, the MA looks like 30% compared to the wifi controlled. Im looking at the 165w.

0 lux is dark. 100,000 lux is full sun day.

a mars will give you 100,000 at 12in
an SB reeflight will too.
a kessil ap 700 will give you 35000 at 12in.

divide any of those lux numbers by 60 to get the par.

Nope.

I see we are back to making up random conversion factors.

if you consider random, Dana riddles work and apogee and the two years of notes. yes. yes I am.
you out from under under the bridge?

Last I checked Dana Riddle has never tested the lux and par of an AP700. So in essence you are making it up.

I went from a 6' 8 bulb x 39w aquaticlife fixture running ATI bulbs to 3 165w mars aqua units back in October after months of research about Led fixtures. Having not used leds in the past, it was a huge leap of faith crossing over to say the least.

I didn't have what I call " Ferrari" money to spend and was done spending $200 for bulbs every year. So I jumped. I have to say that with the mars, they at first seemed very bright and I had to hang them at first 10" off the water. I started them out at 10% white and 20% blues and after a couple of weeks I up the intensity to 20%-30%. Corals started to pale and I went back to 10%-20% and raised them to 12".

Since then till now I can say that buying them was a game changer. All my SPS/LPS have colored up, having the best polyp extension I've ever seen in this tank and are growing at mind bending pace. This with spot on water parameters and occasional feedings.

I don't need to have all those bells and whistles. At $269 for all three units, money well spent and very happy!

I went with the SB reeflights. mainly theres a guy I can talk to.

So you are reading and doing math with made up numbers?
its called research. Par reading from AP. lux reading from AP. then math. simple stuff.

Dude you never ever have anything good to say here and on SDreefs here in san diego. always have been that way. you havent even been reefing that long. EVERYBODY is wrong to you. ABOUT everything. you like to follow stuff I say and grump and complain. im just not into you like that.
if that makes you happy do it on RC. or socali reefs.

I used a lux meter for initial set up, intending to "ramp up" from there. The more I got thinking about Dana Riddles' presentation, the more I wondered if I would see a colouration or growth change using the metrics he presented (flow, light, alk). While early yet, things look at least as good. Still slowly raising alk and lowering intensity.
Later tonite I will put a board on top of the tank to protect it, and take lux numbers at 10% intervals from 10% to 100%

I like to follow when people say wrong things about products they don't own. The par map of the ap700 exists and has been documented by BRS. Do you own an ap700 and have thus done a lux map? This is not the first time you say that the ap700 is a weak light when the reality of it is that it's not and its comparable to every other light out there. This has been brought up before by other members on here who also own an ap700.

I barely post on SD reefs so once again why are you making stuff up?

Also how do you know how long I have been had reef tanks? Your entire post is all based on assumptions so where's the hard data? Show me a par and lux map of an ap700 that shows the conversion factor at 60. Wheres the post that says I haven't been reefing for very long.

i read your first posts on sdr. its easy to see all your posts. Internet.
I personally metered the AP. saw that par data too. easy math.
I speak to AP users who have par meters, usuall after you leave the convo. THEY are quite helpful.
one of the mods is setting up a radion. with an apogee and a lux meter today. did the math
I believe your par meter is a lux meter that has been modified correct?
I can go on but its not worth it. I have been in lighting for 25 years. its not hard or complicated as you make it out to be.
You troll threads just to be negative and deride others choice of lights. thus their financial status.
You coined the term Blurple as a negative and as a slam against lights you dont like, you'll be happy to know its being used in good cheer to describe that color.

you never say anything nice.

After reading this article by Dana Riddle, it's amazing how much you learn about leds. I see what he did there, with the whole lux to par conversion stuff. ;)
