Lost WD in 1 night

Coral committing suicide? That's a first. Interesting point. And if his prized piece died, I wouldn't go to any vendor, at the moment.

What he's saying is that there are a lot of factors that can't be taken into account. Like bacterial infections.

I feel like that's a mash up of different species in a tight space. I say chemical warfare first. Parameter swings second.

If you haven't changed Carbon recently start there.

Bottom line is your probably never gonna know what happened. This stuff isn't designed to live in a glass box. Your gonna kill some. Doesn't matter how good your parameters are.

The moral of the story is never buy a piece you can't afford to lose.

Is your alkalinity fluctuating? How do you acclimate it? The lights generally won't do that in one night. It is either due to acclimation or alkalinity in my experience for that to happen in one night.
Absolutely. I lost lots of coral from a very low Alk reading. It was over a few days tho.

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using REEF2REEF mobile app

This is a common thing to lose a coral after a couple of weeks. The stress of moving a coral from a vendors system to a coral show then to ones tank. Can really stress certain corals. Some SPS are very water Quality sensitive . My WD has not shown this trait but I have had several other coral so it that where all purchased at the same time as the WD. If a small aquarium the chemistry of the water changes extremely fast. That is why you see people keeping 200 gallon reef tanks they have a large volume of water and if there is a water Quality issue it doesn't effect the corals the way a small 14 gallon tank would. There are many reasons for RTN from a simple sting from another coral to improper acclimation to going from a alk of 8 to an alk of 10.
I have been dealing and learning about RTN and STN since 1995.:)

I feel like there may be some incorrect terms being thrown around here too.

Buffer - ph or kh buffer?

Also - you mentioned ph in the stores water test. WhAt about dkh?

This is your tank so you can do whatever you want with it, but I suggest if you are going to pay good money for corals (like the WD!) you should get your own test kits (alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, phosphate, etc) and do your own testing instead of depending on the LFS tests. this way you know at any time what your levels are and when you buffer alkalinity you know what you are raising it to.

How much water changed?
What salt?
What source water? RODI?
It's past. It's ALK swing at night and over crowded. Some had 2 die for others 2 thrive. Sadly was a WD. But salt is firtz 3 gal 30gal tank 10% and only RODI. Changed my filters 3 months ago was thinking of getting a /be just for more water vs a booster bump. More waste I know.

3+ years in u have test kits. I used my LfS 1s as a 2nd source. And I have back ups for those. And waiting for my 75 2 get an apex... so yes I test don't assume

It's Kent dkh buffer. And now my test is 8.3 on my hanna at mid day. When I did take my water 2 LFS

1 reason I asked any1 using a buffer hat would b the best one till my 75 is up is kent dkh buffer. Since my carbonate is being consumed that's what I buffer I know it's prolly not the best but I bought it at month 4 of my 1st tank and went through brown jelly once with it. But now have no problem and all is turning around. My golden dragon is growing nicely now when was bleaching tip.

+1 on Kh.
