My recent ex went nuclear on my reef

Happy holidays everyone. Its been awhile since ive updated here. But yesterday on my birthday of all day my girlfriend poured a bottle of listerine in my reef. Needless to say my oscelleris clown dead black and white clown dead pseudochromis dead and watchman goby dead. So after spending next 2 hours promptly removing her and her things from my house attention went to the tank. I drained every last drop of water after rinsing rock and everything i could. I refilled tank in hopes of saving any coral. My duncan corals frogspawn and some zoas have actually opened up. Im adding a hefty amount of carbon to try and soak up anything it can.

If she returns I'd remind her that since the animals were in captivity, and she deliberately poisoned them, wouldn't that constitute animal cruelty?

This needs to set precedent in case someone should ask. If it were my reef, and with the cost of some of our organisms it at least make it to small claims court.

Actually, in NY it would be considered Crimal Mischif and depending on the dollar amount would determine if it was a felony or a misdemeanor. More than $250 make it a felony in NY.

Of all things to pour into tank....that's just weird.

I'd pour in bleach, windex, detergent...lots of things before the mouth wash, but I guess it was effective. Hopefully the corals pull through.

Who knows, maybe she invented some exotic new coral shock that'll trigger massive growth...and we'll all be pouring mouth wash in our tanks.

There is a state by state list of what is considered animal cruelty here. My state covers all animals with a vertebrae. Last I checked, fish had spines, so that'd be a no brainer here.

Since I think our reefs fall under "property" this would be considered malicious destruction of personal property. IMO....but probably not worth the stress of small claims court and being back in a room with her.

I would file a police report for sure...document the issue!

Keep you're eyes on your nutrient levels, the alcohol in the listerine will fuel your nitrifying bacteria into overdrive. You might have a large bacterial bloom, or it may just cause your nutrients to bottom out. She basically just excessively carbon dosed your tank (among other things).

You're fortunate you didn't wake up to her putting an ice pick in your ear. I would definitely document and pursue criminal charges/civil lawsuit. I would get a restraining order IMMEDIATELY. Without that the police can't do much, I'd get it before she comes back around. Trespass her the first opportunity that she presents. (It's only a matter of time). Good luck
