New Nyos 120 skimmer, normal?

I've been using the Nyos 120 for months. My depth is at 7.5 inches and I managed to have skim within 2 days. First day opened the water outflow 100% and the air 100%. Let it settle till the morning. The following day I spent adjusting the knobs to either dark or light skimmate.

OK you have a new skimmer on a newly set up tank that you used 2 tubes of putty to do rock work and you are wondering why the skimmer is going nuts. First get some Carbon running to help with the Putty, leave the cup off the skimmer and let it run with the output wide open and one day it will just slowly retreat and the water will be at about 1/2 way in your skimmer body and a thicker foam will start. This is when you can start playing with the settings, until then your are just setting your self up for frustration. Some Skimmers can take quite sometime to break in my Omega 150 was like that almost 4 weeks until it settled down. The Wine Bottle shape makes it harder as the bubbles can move very freely up the body. So bottom line is let it RUN and do its thing and it will mellow out.

I never knew until this thread about putty residue being a factor. Im a saltnoob and everything is a first time for me in this journey.

Do not do a water change!
Your #'s are moving but your not cycled until the Ammonia and Nitrites hit zero.

Update...

still foaming:(. Not as bad, still covers 60-75% of sump water with foam. I have salt all over my sump and stand walls from the tiny bubbles popping. Every 2-3 days I close the dial a little more in hopes to see some result.
Tank has had 2 water changes. 2 weeks ago I did 50% water change of overall volume of water (first wc since cycle). Last weekend I did a 5gl wc. This coming weekend I'll do another 5gl's.
I have since made a stand out of eggcrate as a base, skimmer water level stands at 7.5" and I have a gfo/carbon reactor that has been running for 2 weeks or so.

Stock-
One 1" blue damsel
Two 1.5" clownfish (will pick up this weekend)
Four red claw hermits
Two frag sps corals
I feed nls mini pellets every 2-3 days and diced clam once a week.

I read the hobby is about patience and this skimmer is really testing them lol.

I prevent spray from the overflowing collection cup put a gallon bag over the top of the skimmer.

Still very strange that it is doing this, it did take me a little while to get it dialed in. My 120 has been dialed in for months now without my touching anything. The collection cup is sometimes a pain to remove, which is my only complaint.
 
Yesterday I filled the TLF reactor with more carbon. I started with about 1/4 full (50/50mix). Now I'm about half way.
 
I know this is an old thread but I’m ready to throw my Nyos 220 out my window. It won’t stop over flowing on its lowest setting . My tank just finished its cycle
 
Hey, I am also having trouble with an overflowing NYOS. Even with the one valve full open and the air valve full closed the water overflows the cup aggressively. How did you end up getting yours under control? Also what do the valves do?
 
Make sure you have the right water height or it's gonna be tough not to overflow. I have the 160 and it's a beast of a skimmer. I had an issue with my skimmer not starting up after shutting down, but it was a power issue (low incoming voltage to the house).

The air valve should be wide open, otherwise the tower will fill up with water instead of bubbles. Set the micro valve at the midway point, then slowly rotate the large outflow valve until the fine bubbles reach the narrow part of the tower where the cup connects to the skimmer, once settled, then adjust the micro valve to your desired skimmate, dry or wet? The initial water height is the most important part, if it's not set right, you're not going to be able to dial it in properly.

It could be that the outflow port (tube) on the bottom has twisted, not allowing water to flow enough to drop the level? You'll have to hold the air intake in place and carefully twist the tube until it's in the right position. I think the water height should be 21cm or 8" on the 120? I'm not sure how long yours has been running, but it may take days for it to build up enough biofilm and settle down?
 
I second that.... the tube twists very easy especially when you take the cup off
 
I have not had this skimmer for a while now. When I did finally dial it in, it ran like a champ. Was worth the wait.
