New salty 29g biocube

Any idea why they do that? My blasto's center isn't as green as it was before the peppermint shrimp were eating it, but it's happy again.

They go after the stomach first so anything around the mouth is usually harmed first. Your Blasto’s color will comeback just fine, just keep feeding it these guys can eat a lot and often.

That makes sense. One of the LFS just moved to a larger location. I went there today and one of the guys who worked there was super surprised that I had so many looking so good in a biocube. I totally blamed R2R for it!

As I mentioned above, I went to a new location for a LFS. I told him I was thinking about a 300 gallon. I felt like he was talking me out of it. He kept pointing out 50 gallon RedSeas and 100 g RedSeas. He told me he thought I would really be okay with a 120. He didn't ask about the location of the room or what I was wanting to put in it or how much research I had done. I volunteered some of the fish I might like one day. He told me if I only put in 5 fish and got a great filtration system, I could really get by with a 120g or 150g. "The filtration is really the only thing that matters." He said the fish I was talking about may not grow full size, but that was okay. I was thinking to myself, doesn't that mean their growth is stunted and really not okay?

I also said I was really wanted to build my own so I'd understand all the mechanics really well, and his response to me was that RedSeas were nice because you don't have to figure that all out. You can just trust that they have everything included. I'm not in a rush at all and want to make sure I get things right. I don't want to spend a ton of money just to decide it's not what I wanted (too small or too big).

I was super confused. I know for a fact that I don't want to go smaller than a 180 tank and he was trying to talk me into something smaller. So my question is, why? Would I really be better off with a much smaller set up or was he just trying to get me to buy something he currently had on the floor? I know for a fact he wasn't hearing what I was saying, because he responded to me wanting to do it myself with "the nice thing is that you don't have to". I don't even have a place to put the tank at the moment. I told him about needing to rip up the carpet and put tile down and he agreed that was super smart.

He seemed nice enough, I just couldn’t figure out what he was doing. You’d think that if he had someone coming in asking about a custom tank, they’d jump on that. Perhaps people come in talking about that and don’t buy anything, so it’s easier to just make a sale, any sale.

I would think i would come across at least moderately knowledgeable - they had Christmas tree worms that I got excited about when I saw. Plus I had a list of goal species that would work well together and knew their requirements. I wasn’t sure if he really did think I’d be okay with a smaller tank with those species or if he just wanted to make a sale. He didn’t seem to be listening well, but they were also pretty busy. They’ve only just opened that location. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. Especially when every indication would show that he could sell me an even larger set up, thus a bigger sale?

You make perfect sense. There are so many possibilities: Custom quotes take a lot of time and effort - it is easier for the sales person to sell something on the floor. Does he even know how to do a custom quote? Were you talking to the owner or a sales person? Their motivation is completely different. If it was a salesperson, are they on commission or do they get paid only by the hour? (see comment about motivation and effort of doing a custom quote). Many people ask for the moon and then when they realize the cost they walk out without as much as a thank you - the salesperson could still feel the sting of that experience from another recent customer. I won't even get started about the possibility of gender bias. You are assuming that the chance for a bigger sale is a good thing, when that may not have the motivational impact that you are anticipating. Based on your comment about "a sale, any sale" you already know all of this - trust yourself. I will take a chance and suggest that I am pretty sure you're not confused.

I suspect I may end up putting it in the nook that my current biocube holds - it seems to be the perfect size to fill up the spot. If not, perhaps it will be a QT tank or something one day. It doesn't seem to be tempered, so I may just use it to experiment with drilling a hole. The pictures are below.

About the LFS and the Red Sea tank situation, just read that now, my bad. Yea he was trying to sell you something off the floor to make money, but also they don’t understand the time you spend on r2r and how much you know, lastly you have to be very dedicated to the hobby if your looking for 180-300+, not only time but financially. Lighting a tank that size could be close to 10 grand, filtration should cost you another $5k easy, water changes start costing you $100 per change, it’s just a major chunk of change especially if you have other hobbies. To me it’s worth it, and I know you see the value in quality as well. For most people who aren’t super hooked on reefing like we are a 120 is about as big as you’d want to go. So maybe he was trying to look out for you, but who knows.

Yeah. I'm hoping he was thinking he was helping me. I def know that doing something like that won't be a matter of going and buying it all one weekend and setting it up. It's going to take a few months to get everything how I want it. And some room modifications will need to be done - so the time period really may be that I *MIGHT* be cycling the tank by this time next year.

Luckily, I have a tank running and now have another one I can play with while I'm workin on the bigger build - which is still in the planning/prepping phases. I love the location I've picked though. Everytime I walk in the door, I look over here and imagine the big tank being here.

Lol... so true... I was like, "I'm normal" and at the same time hoping that grabbing random cheap tanks "just in case" doesn't become normal.

Good luck with that! So far in 2019 I have been given a 55g, (2)10g, and a 5g. Someone just asked if I would be interested in a 160g. I expect that once people start finding out about your obsession, tanks (and other equipment) will start finding their way into your home and then you will be looking for people and places where you can pass them along. I have found that classrooms, nature centers, and young families make great options when trying to rehome the gear.

Careful..... I had four tanks running at one time a couple of years ago.... almost 500g twv... it was nuts... and I found that 1 or 2 of the tanks would get neglected.... Now I have the 2 biggest tanks running... and I am planning on breaking the smaller one down soon. One big tank is more than enough work....

I expect that once people start finding out about your obsession, tanks (and other equipment) will start finding their way into your home and then you will be looking for people and places where you can pass them along. I have found that classrooms, nature centers, and young families make great options when trying to rehome the gear.

Good point, back when I was teaching high school, I use to get given tanks all the time. I always assume it was because I was a teacher. I had a giant fan tail guppy tank that was gorgeous. Everything else was critters.... geckos, frogs, turtles, insects, etc. But that was years ago.

I technically have two running at the moment- my biocube and the qt tank. But once I finish stocking, the qt tank will be put away unless I need it for a hospital.

Yeah he seems super happy in there! Glad I was able to get his parameters right!

He is pretty awesome though. Everyone says he's an exact clone of me. I read something about how you realize how difficult you are when you have to talk to a miniature version of yourself. Luckily for us all, we're both pleasant the majority of the time! Now off to go give that frag a freshwater dip!

Build what you want and not what an LFS wants you to build.

I have a 180 DT with a 100g sump...about 225 twv showcase reef....and a 135 corner bowfront in my home office... The corner bowfront is getting broken down soon....
