I had freshwater fish in the late '60s early '70s. Saltwater fish only in the '80s. Starting my first reef now, I am 65

Started when I was 35 and I'm older than that now lol.

Started at 15. I split the cost with my parents but I do all of the maintenance. Have had freshwater tanks since 10.

First freshwater, can't remember (60s~70s?). First FOWLR was in 1979. First reef 1980. Now I'm 61. This thread makes me feel like an ;Oldman. Quick Paul, chime in so I can feel young(ish) again.;Playful

How old are you?

I've wanted to be a reefer since I was 11 years old but life happened and I finally got to start my first tank this year, a week before my 57th birthday. Better late than never.

Im actually a young reefer! started at 12 and am now 13

Also For all the reefers on here did you guys do prior research or did you just throw stuff together and ask the LFS

I got my first saltwater tank (it's not fair to call it a reef tank, even though at the time I did) when I was 18 and I'm 38 now. Although, there was a 10 year hiatus in there after my kids were born.

I used to mostly get books from the library to learn about what fish I could keep.
Ironically I still have one of them that I never returned. I wonder what the late fee is on a book that is 20 years overdue.

I was 15, now I'm 51 and have had atleast 1 tank going the whole time but many times 2 or 3. I run just 1 now soon to go bigger as my fish need a bigger tank very soon and it will allow me to grow corals bigger without having to trim and sell to a couple of my lfs's that both were around when I started or sell locally to other reefers.

I started just this year, age 36. Have wanted a big fish tank on and off. Got a small fresh water last year, and then the idea was given to me to get some clown fish, so I started the deep dive into reef tanks.

I spent a month or two researching as much as I could about this or that thinking once I had the equipment things would settle. Nope. I've since been researching and learning more and more about not only the equipment but the life in the tank (corals, fish, algae etc).
It's a slippery slope but I really enjoy watching the tank when everything is right.

I had freshwater tanks as a kid, started my first reef tank at about 40 and then lost my monster about 10 years ago to mother nature. Just started everything up again now that the kids are gone.

I'm 57.
