Have fun, and make sure they do. I read how long that ride will be for you. I have experience with a 5 and 3, I know the patience required. Easier when they would sleep in a stroller. They have so much energy till they fall over.

We may try to go to lego land. My son is 8 and he loves legos. He's really creative and good at replicating things from scratch using legos. We've never really taken to him anything like that. Not really familiar with what goes on there but should be fun. I think we are getting one here in San Antonio soon.

Hmm maybe in the future. I don't see the main point right now. Notifications would be nice but I already have a temp alarm. Of course redundancy is always good. I'm home every afternoon by 5 at least. I wish it had an Alk probe but it doesn't right? Don't get me wrong I want one but I don't $1000 want one. At least not today lol.

Here's my testing from today.

I mixed Red Sea blue bucket and Instant Ocean. I used 1.25 cups of each when making the water. Man may not need that doser for a while.



Magnesium is surprisingly high. I checked twice and got 1460 and 1420.

I read up a bit on the Hanna calcium checker and found out that it has an accuracy of +-6%. That's around 25ppm at 400ppm.

I also read to never rinse with tap water. I've been doing that lately as I've been too lazy to get a container to store RODI close by. Going to get a gallon jug and fill it up for rinsing our the curvettes. This is likely effecting my testing as the test has a dillution of 100 to 1. Any tiny bit of calcium is amplified. Going to clean the curvettes with vinegar real good on Monday.

Still going to continue using the Hanna checker since I have so much reagent. Figure just keep it kind of high and just assume it can be +-10. Another note don't take Ambien and shop online.

Don't ask me how I know.

Yeah I'm kind of surprised at my disinterest in it right now. This is coming from someone who has IP camera alerts setup every time the wind blows on top of recording 24x7. I've tweaked the alerts to prevent false positives (zones, hotspots, make time, pixel change size, etc). I also have snmp alerts enabled on EVERY device. I know when a new device joins the Wi-Fi and when a device looses connection to the network. Every time a devices SMART status is tripped.

At this point I just don't need that level of alerting for my tank and likely all my other devices haha. Guess I have a bit of information overload at the moment. Although it is nice to know when to replace your hard drive before so that you don't loose your RAID array or what not.

I have some stringier algea mostly on one spit in the rocks. It's at the beginning and end of the vid. Tried to capture all the rocks so you can get an idea. The stringier algea looks like it's on a couple of frag plugs. Someone told me it was cyano. Agree?

My nutrients seem like they test pretty low but I do have diatoms come back on the glass every day or so if I wipe them off.
Not sure if that indicates anything or not?


Also noticed this stringy like thing hanging off my nem? Is this normal or no?

I bought a used classic pre 2016 version had no wifi. Came with display eb8 extra dc8 ph probe and temp probe for under $300 then added a $40 wifi dongle gaming adapter/extender thingy and it has wifi like the newer versions.
No there isn't an apex alk probe. BUT. After all the testing they will be releasing the Trident which will test and track your main 3 nutrients Cal, Alk Mag. Additionally if have dosing pumps set up apex will dose to maintain those parameters after trident tests, making it close to an ultimate whole reef controller.
Apex isn't just redundancy but having the ability to turn on/off certain items on their own depending on your parameters, leak detectors, flow meters etc.
Trouble doesn't always happen when you're away from home, I can't count the posts I've read of reefers waking up in the middle of the night to a total disaster.
Also being able to control a second tank is the key for me as well. My daughter's tank will be ran on my Apex's DC8 powerbar on the other side of the house connected by one single cable to my Apex brain in my cabinet.
I see used apex 2016 wifi version on here all the time for $400-$500 and usually come with a few extras.

I’m not sure, I haven’t seen cyano like that before. That kinda looks like a spaghetti worm but it’s also on the frag plug so who knows. Maybe it’s green hair algae covered in cyano lol. The nem is just going #2 I think.

I agree, the long strings to the left of the frag plug appear to be cyno laced hair algae. Not a big deal. Reach in and pluck it. You don't have an infestation, let the tank do it's thing for a week and note the color and size of the tufts. Tank is looking pretty good to me.

They would sleep in the fake nem every single night.


I got rid of the fake anemones because they kept breaking down into small pieces in about 1 month. Now I have a real nem and they just ignore it. Go figure!

I see some Cyanobacteria and hair algae in the video. Nothing to worry about in a new tank. It is normal and will take care of itself as the tank matures.

i swear my tank was like 2-3 months old when i started thinking.. well a 120 sure would be nice.. this 2 foot cube thing sure is limiting on fish.

Since before I even ordered it. This is the "test run". My idea is to see how well I will do long term as far as maintenance, enjoyment, cost, etc. Then when we buy our own house and I can afford it, we will then get a large aquarium. Was thinking in wall at first. Maybe peninsula? But still very far away from being able to afford it haha. So far everything else is going good.

We have 3 tanks in the house this go around. My 50 gallon cube, then we got my son a 15 gallon fluval flex freshwater tank (his endler's are like guppies. They keep reproducing), and we have one extra 15 gallon Fluval flex that is for QT (I did not prophylactically treat my fish). Maybe the 15 gallon could be a frag tank one day? Hmm...

If you notice in the last paragraph I said this go around because we've been on this ride before with freshwater. One small turtle tank, the size of a shoe box, turned into a 55 long, a 40 breeder, and a 20 long. 40 breeder was for the two red ear sliders turtles, 55 long for African cichlids, and 20 long for fry.

We had these 3 tanks in a 10'x10' room in my mom's house. It was the tanks, my fiancee, and our son. This was a little over 5 years ago I think, before I graduated college. Had to tear things down to start a life for us on our own. So far so good with that also .

haha, i had freshwater as a kid, but skipped that this go around. had to try the saltwater! i have stumbled upon some really cool videos on youtube by some german dude that does planted tanks and it looks appealing. i just dont want to have to learn something new at the moment, maybe someday. the freshwater fish don't excite me at all, that's my main drawback

i think i've quelled my new tank urge for the year, i bought one of those APS stands for a 20 gallon innovative marine for like $50 when drfosterssmith was having a sale, but i still haven't set up the stand, so it's on my eventual to do list. i rent a house so i kind of want to get into something more permanent before i try my hand at a huge aquarium...... but there's this guy on offerup selling a SCA 150 tank/stand/sump for like $700 and it has been on there for months. it's really bothering me!
