Some aussie stuff

I love my Aussie boxes when we order them. Usually a gem or two

I would love to see any of the nice ones you have from past boxes! Feel free to post here, that goes for anyone who wants to contribute.

Electricmusic, feel free to pm me if your curious about how to get your own I don’t want to make the thread about how to get them, just want to focus on the corals.

I'm in Australia and all those pieces you have got are common. Would get these in most shipments.

They must go through a lot of stress in their travels to the US because in Australia we can only have access to coral from our own reefs due to the import of coral and inverts being banned. It always comes in healthy and most people in Australia will buy colonies instead of frags due to the low price of colonies.

So I figured I would share my last box of coral I got so people can see what stuff looks like and maybe some of the reefers who cant keep or haven’t had wild stuff can live through this thread for a moment. I have got lots of Bali and figi acros in the past which were great but since they are all not shipping for now I figured I would try an Aussie box. Why not fill the right half of my tank rather than buying 2 or 3 of the newest hot coral mini fragments?
I got it shipped straight over from Aussie, basically because I don’t care to pick what I get and the corals have not been shipped and tanked multiples of times over. I think this is why a lot of stuff I see in stores is always very pale and fragile. They came in really good condition concidering, and also sizes were nice along with the colony shapes were decent too. Another plus of not buying from vendors or wholesalers where stuff gets cut down. Colors were ok but a couple straight greens like always and two really nice ones.
A lot of people don’t buy wild or mariculture acropora because there is a ton of misinformation out there. I would like to get into all of that but maybe in another thread or later if it’s brought up again here. What I will say now is the countries that are mainly depending on mariculture and wild corals for their tanks certainly don’t have any of this misinformation going around between the reefers there. And these guys can grow corals with the best of us.
These pics were taken the mourning after they arrived with my phone. I am looking for species names on a few of these as well so if you know please post, and I will give a few my best guess.

Yea they are not rare corals, really not much rare stuff comes from there too often, there is a reason why most of the stores and vendors in the us have stopped buying acropora completely. I would love to see what you have there that is rare though! Can you share some pics? They are in a bag for two days so yes they get stressed, but what these look like is amazing compared to what you see at most any local fish store in the us, unless they really know what they are doing and that is what is rare :)

Brett can you show me a pic of what that last granulosa looking Acro will look like? I am curious because that’s one we don’t get in the us much.

I have a really nice deep water I can’t tell if it’s a loripes or a granulosa but it’s starting to get beautiful I’ll try to get a pic

What to you do for QT/dipping these colonies over there?

Thanks

Melafix for at least 5 weeks dipping every week. Also for those that don’t really know I will use melafix 100x over anything else for elimination of flat worms and other pests. Also as a side note if you are going to use this product be careful of any a. Hyacinthus. And deepwater need to be especially careful as they will Rtn from the base after a couple dips. Therefor the coral can ride out only about 7-8 mins max in the dip

I love melafix over anything else as well. When I have to do weekly dips I switch each week from melafix to revive and back.
Please post that Deepwater pic I would love to see it. I have been trying to find a pic of something like the Deepwater piece at the end of my list but no luck yet. I just hope it keeps the blue polyps at the tips and continues to color up.
I think I might update each piece if I can get time just to document some of the color while they adjust.

Haha, nowhere, it’s an joke my friend signed me up originally so he picked the screen name and all that stuff. I figured I wouldn’t use the account much back then. I wish I knew how to change screen names. I live south of dc.

I just checked the corals and looks like the blue and purple colors were washed out the most from shipping. Every piece looks better than it did last week, I will try and take some pics to show the colors coming back.

I would love to get some wild pieces just nervous about all the crap that comes with them. Don’t have a QT for coral so all I could is dip them once in melafix pond and cross my fingers....

Not sure it’s worth the risk, but these prices for frags are so high now a days compared to 10 years ago when I did this.

All we do is a dip to kill any Flatworms which you really only get on a few species and even then it's rare to ever see any.

My LFS dips them when they receive them from the collector and I do think actually bother dipping them before going into my tank. Coral pests aren't much of an issue here in Australia we really don't hear of many issues with people's tanks. Just the occasional flatworms

The way I look at it is, if your too focused on not getting pests it takes away from the fun of collecting things. Wild corals have really got a false reputation for being pest magnets. I don’t remember the last time I actually saw a pest on a wild coral. I have seen pests on corals from hobbiests too many times to count. But of course it does still happen with wilds but for me I don’t let it stop me from getting them prices on coral frags today and even photos are just too much for me. I like being surprised at what I get and I am prepared to deal with anything that might come in pest wise. That’s all you really have to be, prepared. If your not it always ends up being a problem.
