Texas 180 half hex tank

Monster reefer, my choice would be #1.

I know #1 works very well, #2 I had difficulties with,
and instead of #3 I would invest then in a Lifereef skimmer which is just slightly higher in price.

Hope that helps.

Ok so this is the skimmer I'm going to get in about a week.

Great,
as soon it comes in, install it and let it run.
It might very likely overflow after a few hours or even minutes.

Route a hose to a bucket and catch out the wet foam that is being produced.
you might end up with 3-6 Gallons of very wet foam before the skimmer starts getting foaming normal.
This is due to the excessive waste in the water.

I will post the magic receipe you need to mix very soon, which you need Svedska Vodka (buy at Specs or Liquor store), Heintz white Vinegar and regular white sugar and a bottle of 0.5L that you can use to contain the so called VSV mix.
In addition you need to purchase a 12 or 16 ampule containment of "Biodigest". Amazo I found the cheapest ones. Keep in mind only biodigest, nothing else, no need for a combo package that also contains bacteria food, that is already present in your tank.

A few days after the skimmer ran nicely we will start the VSV dosing and increase of bacteria population and bring the tank slowly back to life.
I won't bring your tank to an ULNS status, but will significantly lowering your nutrient level similar to the Biopellet method, but more controlled.

So start looking into those ingredients.

Cool, yeah I'm thinking about redoing the sump area of my aquarium.
1st add a 3rd door, in to the stand for better access.
2nd add a shelf to place more things.
3rd sand the inside of the stand and paint it white. I don't really like the black make it look really dark.

What do you used for dosing?

Dosing pump or by hand

Exactly, that is the right stuff !!! But wait with dosing of this stuff until skimmer ran for a few days and I will let you know more.

VSV - Dosing daily or twice a day will be done manually.

I use the little caps from a Pharmacy or a Syringe for dosing.
We will work in 1/10 of ml resolution. So make sure you have a syringe that you can read from.

Other then that to start, that's it.

In a few weeks we will start looking into your PO4 and Nitrate levels.
Do you have test kits for that? In case yes, what brand?

PSX

Monster reefer, the noise will start soon, the haters will come out of their holes !!!
Keep following my directions and don't get irritated by statements from others.
A lil trust is needed, you have nothing to loose !!!

When you want to remodel your sump, remember to accomodate 2 mesh socks 200 micron.
You can get rid of the barrell and maybe us a 40G breeder tank and baffle it DIY.

I can shoot a picture of my one. Works pretty well.
One issue the materials and hoses you did use leech out phosphates and other undesired chemicals very likely.
So in future DIY's, a bit of more reefsafe material selection is helpful.

Yes I have an API master saltwater test kit along with another brand for phosphates I can take pics of them tomorrow or Thursday when I'm off. I might be working on my fish room build. Along with cleaning my shed out and trying to sell some smaller 10-29 gallon aquariums.

Here is a link to the fish room build pictures if you want to take a look

I've been looking in to getting this custom made for this tank but have not had the time.

I know some one is going to look at the refugium and be like why is it not on the bottom of the sump, it's called a floating refugium.
I was talking to a guy at ATM and he suggested it when I we talked about the design for the sump it alows the sand bed to have twice as much service area than a normal refugium. By adding a really fine mesh as the base for the sand to sit on allowing water to pass through but not sand.

K, in terms of the sump.
- No refugium, this will overkill the VSV method, means too many different methods will starve the tank on the long run.
Happens to many people! They use, GFO, Refugium with Chaeto and Nitrate remover and finally nothing will work since it is then too much nutrient reduction and the animals will starve.

- Frag section, throw it away, propagate the frags on a frag rack in the tank. Refugium have too much flow or not enough flow.
In addition, the sump is mostly far too clean to have sufficient growth if any in the sump. Some people have limited success, but keep that for later if you really want to apply that.

- Additional media section. Not required, going back to point one, we don't want to overfilter the tank.

You need to accomodate filtersocks, a skimmer section, a return pump section and something where you can accomodate activateed carbon as needed from time to time.
Don't get confused on applying a combination of different methods.
We will apply VSV which is very powerful. No need for anything else.

Terms of the API test kits, biggest crap ever. Only the ALK test if not expired is somewhat useful.
So in a few weeks you will need a Red Sea Pro Nitrate test kit and a Salifert Phosphate test kit to do the job.

Over the time we need to apply ALK, CA and MG dosing when the time comes, but not for now.
At the minute, it can only get better, lol.
Also I don't want to stress you out with too many things all at once.

Looking at the pictures, you have not set the priorities correct.
Not sure about your history in this hobby, but looking at the fish room, you wanted to go big, with very limited experience, otherwise you would have been done things differently on your tank!!!
Good ideas in the fish room, but too early maybe!?!

LMK if that all makes sense to you.

Ok cool I can stick with the sup I have it's a great open area to work with I can place a 4" filter sock but not sure how I can place 2.
Test kits not to big of a deal.

So far on the fish room I have not had any troubles. It's almost done cycling so I'll be able to put fish and corals but I need more power to run everything. The only thing I have not bought for both tanks is a skimmer.

Here is a picture of my last reef tank be for I moved in October 2014
image.jpeg

After I moved I set up a 120 gallon used tank on Nov 30th on December 25 the tank cracked in the center bottom between the two glass seams.
Same day I fond the current aquarium the 180 gallon.

Was thinking to go back to MH for a while, but forget that. Let's see what we can achieve with your current installed lights.
Like I mentioned earlier, your lights are not of concern.

I'm thinking about going and grabbing the cord to Controll the kessils with the apex so that I can know how intense the lighting is.

So I was looking into the reef octopus skimmer and making a diy skimmer so the reef octopus has a 4" venture design to force air in with the water like most skimmers.

But what's the real difference between a dIY with the same pump and a reef octopus besides it being clear?
Here is kinda what I was thinking while I was at home depot 4" pvc

Would it be able to basically do the same job?
