thinking about giving up

While QTing is a great tool to ensure health, the LFS is most certainly partly responsible as they are providing diseased animals. Yes, the whole supply chain probably has issues, but they play a part.

So if you bought medicine or chems of any kind from an LFS and did not use them properly is that their fault then too?
Was the fish that was still bagged that had disease their fault, or the collector?
Sorry, but ultimately you are responsible for what goes into your tank.

Are you saying Qt of fish would not be a safety resolving potential issues w/ your display animals? Really?

Nope. Unless the product was some how defective.
If you purchase a defective ATO for example, would you return it? What if the retailer told these units have been known to have issues. Is it now your responsibility to fix it?

I’m with you. QTing is certainly a great tool to ensure the health of the animal as well as the others in the DT. However, to say that the LFS plays no part in responsibility misses the mark. We wouldn’t except receiving damaged goods for “other” retail products. Buyers in this industry has been conditioned to except it.

Additionally, I think most LFS due take some responsibility as they offer refunds for deaths within a certain time frame.

What if the animal is visually sound with no obvious disease being shown? While I never have quarintined any fish I knew the gamble we were taking and I would not hold my LFS responsible one bit.

The water in my tank kills all parasites fish may carry, all it takes is a 10 minute dip in a bowl of it. Anyone with a diseased fish is welcome to come over, just make an appt. Cost is only 9.99$;Wacky

I think this whole thread was blown out of proportion from my first comment seeing the easy solution to not introduce disease into your tank by doing what most experienced reefers have come to realize in the importance and benefits of QTing your animals.

It's ridiculous to me to not see the easy resolve to keep from continuing of tank crashes to the point someone wants out of the hobby.
I agree w DSC reef, if you choose to bypass QT, you should be aware of the risk, it's on you, own it.
I also agree you can not identify disease always by just observing the fish, uronema was my example, very common disease tough to see in initial stage, you think ich is bad, uronema much worse.

Anyway, this has gone far beyond my attempt to help OP by stating a very simple solution
I understand people have space constraints, budget issues, but Op has 3 tanks, geez, how easy it should be to make one a QT or set up a temp, I mean he works at a fish store!!
He should know the risks

If you gamble w/ your own tank, that's your perogative, you will receive no grief from me, but if you come on the site asking for advice and ready to throw in the towel, and an experienced reefer gives you advice on a simple resolve, and you don't want to take that advice, that's all on you, I gave nothing but a truthful and helpful comment to try to help a fellow reefer.

FW dip will not cure uronema or other issues.

i’m currently setting up a QT. i know it’s irresponsible to begin with, for not having a QT with three current tanks. but i’m fixing my mistake. i talked to my family, we all decided. i’m putting everything in my 20 gallon into my 55. i’m turning the 20 gallon into the QT tank. HOB filter, bare bottom, a piece of dry rock and some pvc pipe for them to hide in, and the same heater that’s been in there, along with a bubbler. i feel irresponsible, but like i said, i’ve NEVER had this problem before. inverts and corals is what i’m doing right now. all the new fish i get, along with the remaining from the sick tank, which is just a couple damsels, will be treated with cupramine and yeah. that’s that.

also, everybody wants to see my orange spot gobies. let me show you them.

Well that was sure an easy problem solve...

I hope this makes reefing remain enjoyable and successful for you, and helps you guide others at the LFS you work at.

I see you already made your choice but I agree if you are not having fun to get out. Just keep a pico tank, can even be an sps pico tank. Waterchange are fast and easy, no dosing or crazy equipment. I wouldn't keep fish in it. They are great fun! And kinda a relaxing bonsai experience to trim the coral every so often. Bigger isn't better!
2nd thought would be to downsize to a 40b or a slick all in one

Wow another one of these threads. Sucks for the OP about the velvet multiple times. Also see that some are promoting doing a QT while others aren't. I will just say this. If you do not QT your fish or buy from someone that has some type of QT process, what happened to the original poster will eventually happen to you. A healthy looking fish "can" still have velvet and even be immune to it. That same fish can still spread the disease(s) that it carries.

Whatever works for anyone whether it is setting up your own QT, buying from someone that does QT, or rolling the dice you pick your poison. I know for a fact that I won't be buying from just anyone anymore.

I wonder why freshwater mechanisms are so different. Occasionally I'll buy some tetras that have possibly two ich spots on them (didn't notice at time or wouldn't have bought) and after a week in my tank they're all ich free

it's in the system clearly as I've not fallowed the planted tank, but it's suppressed such that ich has never infected me as a tank wipeout in decades of fw keeping and the system is heavily planted with much driftwood, somehow the natural materials promote anti ich I don't know the mechanism

The all plastic tank setups are more prone

The further we get into substituted materials for reef substrates, no live rock use, the heterogeneity that promoted this balance in reefing seems to give way to all kinds of new invasions nowadays i never saw in 90s saltwater tanks. They were just hair algae traps nothing special. Never saw dinos until 2006

This is an acknowledged point for Paul B as his natural arrangements do the same in reefing. This is where the portion of reefers that aren't so QT heavy get their material, though it's hard to replicate and tell someone else what arrangement gives reliable no qt marine crypto or velvet benefit, it's clearly possible to arrange tank quality and feed and environment to totally suppress common diseases.

My thoughts reading this are to get rid of 2 of the tanks(sounds like 1 is already out) and focus fully on 1 tank and maybe use 1 of the now spares as a qt tank. Figure out what you want for stock in it and stick to growing whatever you choose out.
Ive always been a little confused with what to me sounds like people constantly adding to their tanks. Its been so long since I added anything to my tank. I had a qt setup at the start but took it down since Im not adding any more.
Ive focused completely on the "little" i started with and have grown my corals and fish into more then I could have hoped.

* somehow i skipped the page where you said youre already doing this. Excellent decision.

Outta curiosity, why were you running 3 tanks?
