Anybody still using one and have you ever used one? I guess you would have to be as old as i am. Thats all there was when i started 200 years ago

They worked and still do. Not as sexy as sumps and skimmers though :). We didnt have dr tims or vibrant then lol

Omg are you serious? I did that long time ago.....hardly anybody i know, knows what that is

Oh i know it works

its just not sexy like saying i got a eight nero 5's running part time with 3 MP40's with a quad APEX's the Expert PRO Edition with and auto water changer and doing a with weekly vibrant mixed with microbacter7 dosing regime.

I do miss my vortex XL diatom filter though

Did you have the big red sea berlin skimmer? Lol
D
no i had some crummy lime wood airstone skimmer.....no not that

Instant Ocean SeaClone Protein Skimmer, External Hang-On or In-Sump everbody got suckered in to buying and wouldnt admit they stunk

Crushed coral is still the main substrate used in reef tanks. Not sure what joke is about.

I used UGFs back in the day. They kept FO tanks crystal clear. At a cost.

The problem with them is they are massive nitrate factories. They pull deitrus into your substrate and then help it decay by putting a flow of water through it. Instant nitrate. Running in reverse doesn't help unless you can filter deitrus first. I used to save the water in FW tanks because the nitrate levels made it fantastic fertilizer for plants :-)

Filter sponges are used now mainly with FO. By keeping them clean you greatly reduce the nitrate issue. Ironically airstone driven UFGs moved less water than power heads and had fewer issues.

Tank has been running for 2 years now. Had Paul B give me some pointers
When you get a chance i be interested in what you have learned and explain what your doing and how it works. If you dont mind leaving it here. Thanks

It was different back then the crushed corals pieces were pretty large grain sized compared to todays sand....not if you go reverse flow. Blow water out of the sand not suck it in
