No biggie if you forget or aren't available to dose. They may be the same chemical but certainly not the same concentration or price.
Vitamin C dosing for zoanthids (I am clueless)

I know this is an old thread but I would like to start dosing Vit C. Some of my zoos are not looking great and are closed. They been like this for about two months now. They open up very little than close back up. I have a total of 200 gal system and I'm going to start dosing 1/4 tsp twice a day. I've read some threads where it states to dose in the sump after the carbon. This is where I have the problem dosing in the sump. My return pump is attached to a manifold as well as my carbon reactor. So it will be a pain to take the carbon off line everytime I dose vit c. Can I mix the vit c with tank water and dump it in the main display? First dose will be around 5am and second dose will be around 10pm. Lights will be out both times.

OK, I'm getting really tiered of my filter sock getting clogged up in less than 24 hours. I actually thought that my old filter socks got exhausted and went out and purchased a new one. But the same thing happened. I don't know if I can run my system without it as it was doing its job very well before starting Vit C. I'm also running carbon, and it gets exhausted just as fast. I think I'm going back to Vodka as I never had this problem. I was changing the filter sock every three days, which I can handle.

So dosing the vitmain c NutriBiotic, Sodium Ascorbate, Crystalline Powder, 16 oz (454 g) - iHerb.com with a filter sock and carbon will still work? Thats what i have/run on my system...

I'd remove the filter sock for now. The amount of nutrients the VC removes in the beginning, will clog that sock very quickly & could very easily cause an overflow problem. Once the majority of excess nutrients are removed & the nitrate has remained at 0 for a month, it might be OK to use it again. You should be fine with carbon. I have Purigen in my sump & dose the VC at the end of the sump, after that--just in case.

Ok thank you! I might actually try this now, i tried the one from brightwell before but it was just too costly and i just stopped.
How much do i need to dose to start with? and how long before i raise it?

Dosing Vitamin C Chart
Use this product:
NutriBiotic, Sodium Ascorbate, Crystalline Powder, 16 oz (454 g) - iHerb.com

To figure out how much to use, decide if you want to simply improve coral growth, spread, and color. If so, then you should dose around 5 ppm twice daily. If you are having problems with coral or fish health, dose up to around 30 ppm twice daily.
Calculate the total net number of gallons in your tank (minus rocks, sand, etc). Enter that number here ______.
You will now need to do a little math. The amounts below are for 100 gallons of water so if you have 50 net gallons, cut the amounts shown below in half etc. No need to be exact--I usually round to the nearest 1/4 tsp.
Dosing amounts using Iherb product:
1/4 tsp=1112 mg.
For every 100 gallons:
5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC
After you have figured out how much you want to dose at each dosing, enter that number here _____. This is your dose to be used twice a day. Try for at least one dose being done during lights out, as VC absorbs better in the dark.
Notes:
*Be sure your pH and alk are within normal reef limits before starting. Adjust if needed. Monitor weekly.
*Shoot for a ppm of around 5 if only dosing for improved coral growth, coloration, and spread. Shoot for higher amounts up to 30 ppm if you are having melting zoas or closed zoas and look for the causes of your problems as you dose. Check for high nitrates, pests, zoa pox, predators, and unstable water conditions.
*Dose low amounts and increase the amount slowly over the course of a few days to a couple weeks.
*Do NOT dose at high levels (>10ppm), if you don’t have a skimmer! Especially on a nano tank.
* If you notice an algae bloom or increased skim on your glass then cut back by half until it disappears.
* Watch your skimmer, it will start to skim more.
* Dose the amount twice a day in a fast moving area of your sump or overflow. You may dilute the vitamin c in ro/di water for a minute then pour into my overflow. If adding to sump, try and add the vitamin c after filtration such as skimmers and reactors.
* If you have a question, ask here. I check VC threads daily.
* The instructions in this guide and throughout this thread are based on using pure Sodium Ascorbate, not vitamin c pills and other non-buffered forms of vitamin c.

what is best way to use purigen, media bag or reactor and were should i place in sump. my sump is 3 compartments skimmer>refugium>return pump(pump for BRS reactor with gfo and carbon)

I add it at the end of my sump, right before the pump.

For those of you who believe you have had some success, please elaborate....are you dosing anything else in conjunction or did you stop dosing something that you were (i.e., Kalkwasser, Vodka/MB7, etc..) Give us a feel for what you were doing before you started the Vit C and if you are doing it still in conjunction or in lieu of....For instance, I have an external de-nitrator, which I dose MB 7 and Vodka in the de-nitrator (i do add MB 7 directly to tank too, but Vodka stays in the de-nitrator to reduce the risk of a system wide crash). I started this roughly two weeks ago and my nitrates were cut by about 50% (from about 25 ppm to 10-15 ppm), and I suspect it will continue to drop. I have not had any Algea issue per se, but I have very high nutrients (high bio load), and had a fairly hard green crust growing on the back of my tank. Once the De-Nitrator kicked in, the crust has started to soften up and fall away (this is a good thing, and snails are finishing up the job!). Also, my sps seem to "enjoying" the reduced nitrates/nutrients as you can plainly see more polyp extension and some initial coloring up. My interest in the Vitamin C is that my zoa/palys just seem to melt when I put them in my tank. Everything is else is doing fine, but not those. My parameters are spot on, so when it was mentioned that some of you had success with the Vitamin C and the Zoa/Palys thought this deserved some more attention. But some more info would be helpful as to what you may or may not have been doing prior to the Vit C or in conjunction with it.....

From what I have read perusing this thread and the one on RC, most people that started dosing VC just have a basic system with skimmer/carbon/sump for filtration. They go from a steady system w/o VC and start dosing it and within about a month they notice all sorts of changes - lower nitrates, less algae, better colors on corals, faster growth rate, etc. I started VC 2 days ago and I have a zoa colony that's havin trouble right now so we'll see!
