Vitamin C dosing for zoanthids (I am clueless)

I also have a cup coral and a gorgonian and none are affected, quite the opposite. Now the gorgones are another story. I have my main gorgone and 2 frags of it and they had great polyp extension before dosing, now they don't show their polyps at all. I will keep dosing but will reduce the dose a little just to see. I was thinking maybe the bacterias are building up on them and that create a sort of slim. It does have a different slime on my glass now. I used to have green algae building up on my glass now it looks more like some gray slime.

I'm not sure why this would have a negative effect on them. I have cup corals that fair quite well with VC. I know that's a far different animal though.

I found something interesting. It seem that vitamin C degrage about 2%; per day when stored in darkness, away from light.

Stability of Ascorbic Acid: Orange Juices

"Ready-to-drink juices averaged significantly lower reduced vitamin C: 27 to 65 mg/c at opening and 0 to 25 mg/c at expiration 4 weeks later. Ready-to-drink orange juices had twofold to threefold higher concentrations of oxidized vitamin C vs the orange juices reconstituted from frozen, and the decomposition rate of reduced vitamin C was similar for all juices, about 2% per day once opened.

APPLICATIONS: Ready-to-drink orange juices should be purchased 3 to 4 weeks before expiration date and consumed within 1 week of opening."

I am guessing that we may be able to dose vitamin C automatically as long as we replace the solution each week. If it degrade by 2% per day, that would not be so much loss after a week, like 14%. Also I am guessing that the vitamin C does oxydize in its powder form, so do we really have still some vitamin C active when the bottle has been open for a month or more??

Any thoughts on this? I am not saying to dose it automatically all the time but if one goes in vacations for a week or two, would'nt it better to dose automatically with premixed VC stored in air tight (enough) and in dark container than not to dose anything?

Oh and this should be an interesting little science project to test the theory about how long does VC stay active in water and how much of it is left after 2 weeks:

Been dosing for about 2 months and my zoas are growing too fast for their own good. Haha!

I would think vitamin c dosing would be different then orange juice expiring if they expired at the same rate then plain vitamin c pills or liquid that is used for human supplements would be expiring at the same rate. Which we know is not true as there shelf life is over a year.

I have been dosing using brightwells vitamin c once bottle is over I will switch to the iherb. I do not dose daily just once a week. Thanks for the info to iherb dosing

How are your other corals?

I haven't noticed a change in anything besides zoas/palys other than that my chalices seem to be growing faster than I expected. I got them around the same time I started VC dosing so its hard to say whether or not it has anything to do with it. My sps has always had great polyp extension and continues to. So my conservative opinion is that VC is for sure GREAT for zoas/palys and has no negative effect on other corals. I don't spot feed my chalices so if they continue to sprout new eyes and grow at this relatively fast rate I might start attributing it to the VC .

Anyone else have any noticeable effects on chalice or LPS in general?

anybody have any ill side effects like slimey stuff or something? just started dosing and stuff seems slimey feeling

Yes, that is the bacteria growth, being boosted by the carbon dosing. This is your nitrate being removed. Check your nitrate to see. Your skimmer should also be producing more.

Yes. You can always blow it off your stuff with a turkey baster, to get it into the water column for the skimmer to remove. Do you have proper flow in there?

I started dosing VC bout two weeks ago and all the sudden I have a break out of this stuff. Is it related?

I dont run a skimmer it is on a redseamax 34 g
I run purigen and chemipure. It is real stringy and all over. I did a water change and cleaned up the frag rack and day and half later it is all over the frag rack again.
