What is your favorite sump brand?

Hello people of R2R!

I am shopping for a 36” sump, and there seems to be a billion options out there. Bashsea, Crystal Reef Aquatics, Advanced Acrylics, Trigger Systems, etc.

I was wondering if anyone had some feedback on their sump. My requirements are 3 1” inputs, an area to put floss (whether in filter cup or a tray), and dosing tube holders.

I think the strongest competitors are the @Crystal Reef Aquatics SRS36” and the Trigger System’s @MarineDepot 36” sump. However both of these are pushing the budget, at $600, and I can’t find any feedback online.

Here is the @Crystal Reef Aquatics one.

Benefits:
Looks amazing
Fits all requirements
Has a great area for floss

Drawbacks:
Does NOT come with any lid to reduce salt creep.

And here is the Trigger Systems @MarineDepot sump.

Benefits:
Comes with lids to reduce salt creep
Fits all requirements

Drawbacks:
Less sexy
Less optimal floss setup

No I had not! At $450, 25% less than the previous models I listed, that is more budget friendly for sure. The only downside I see is that the inputs are 1.25” and I am using 1” , though I suppose they may be willing to modify that for me.

If I had not already bought modular marine overflow, I may have gone with one of those combos! It certainly would have been nice to know about

Check out Geo's Reef he has some really nice sumps and will build custom of what you want.

Certainly nice, but the majority of the sumps are out of my budget. The 36R, at $600+ shipping, would be the comparable model. I would need 3 1” drains rather than the 2 he provides, but I suppose he could add that in?

For off the shelf I was impresses with the skimz units I have used. Of course my favorite has easily been a rubbermaid stock tank! For smaller systems vertex somatic have also been pretty good.

I’ve looked at that Trigger/Marine Depot sump, but it has that weird end chamber. It’s either too small of an ATO reservoir or a refugium where you’d have to reroute your plumbing.

I went thru this issue last year, I went with Precision Marine R36 Pro Plus. I bought from them which after a discount code + shipping came to $505.50. it was well packed, has 3 inputs, 2 7" filter socks, probe holders ect. It has plenty of room for a large skimmer & return pump, I didn't want a built in ATO container. Post 1 & I think 3 of my build thread have pretty good pictures of it. (I only used 2 inputs, 3rd I just have going into the skimmer section as it hopefully will never have water in it.

I have a trigger systems, 34" sump. Even though it is nice, the niceness is unnecessary. If I was going to do it again, I would not have spent the money on a pretty one. Different colors, fancy routing, etc. I would actually go with a custom one, with fully removable lids. Each manufactured one has a drawback that I would eliminate. IE. the dosing ports on mine are on the wrong side of the sump for my set up.

Those are some slick looking sumps - almost a shame to get them wet . I've always just made my own, but might go commercial next time …. well, if there is a next time.
