What's Next: What are you thinking about trying next?

My something new is...not messing with the tank, and not micromanaging anything.
I had a cyano outbreak for a month, i did nothing, changed nothing...it is now gone.
1st time i have jist left it to see what happens.
I am relating it to being similar to...buying 50 snails for an algae problem, and they wipe it out and then 30 die of starvation.
Our tanks are always changing and re-balancing themselves constantly.
Bacteria levels and types change, nutrients change...levels change.
If theres cyano, its because its feeding on something, when it wipes out what it feeds on, it goes away.(like the snails)
Any algae is correcting something in our tank.
From now on i let the tank correct itself and i only worry about major parameters.
I leave the little stuff to the tank life.
Seems to work so far, and it is much more enjoyable for me.

My current system? No. But it's also only 3 days old.

As far as "new" I went bigger, finally switched to a sump with a drilled tank, got a wavemaker gyre, started a basic refugium and went with a much thinner sand bed.

So, now I'm where most of you were 10-15 years ago. Slowly catching up!

Not really. You're actually WAY ahead of the game/us. We learned by trial & error, you have the luxury of R2R, BRS and a slew of other resources & equipment. Ask Ryan at BRS, he was putting model airplane props on submersible motors to DIY wavemakers. I think he even contemplated patenting them...lol

I think i might jump on the trident train now that return shipping is in the US.
My tank is already set up similar to the trident method, so giving it a crack should be fairly inexpensive.

So what do I mean by "what's next?"

Well we're always tinkering and toying with our reef tanks but many times it's because something isn't quite right. Maybe it's an algae issue, acros not coloring up or a slew of other things. The hardest thing to do is to sit back and wait so we like to try new things. It's not always the best idea in this hobby!

So for me lately I have been dealing with GHA or green hair algae. I've tried a few different things and had some success but I just can't beat it all back. So what's next? Well let's talk about that today!

What are you thinking about trying next and why are you thinking about it?

I got a little crazy with buying Frags I liked and they are all doing great but need to get my next build done so I can transplant some to it. It’s a nice problem to have

I am looking and researching RODI systems so that I can do ATO. I'm tired of adding water every few days.

Two ongoing problems - one was more of an annoyance than a problem - using NOPOx that last .05 PO4 wasn't going away (common problem with carbon dosing), tried Phosphate Rx just to see if could knock it down to .02-.03 and it worked great once I got the drop count right (I started very, very slow).

Last issue is GHA (or brown, nasty looking GHA), which is why I wanted PO4 down. So it's still there, of course. Doesn't clean for diddly - oh it cleans, tank looks great for about 10 - maybe 15 minutes (an exaggeration of course but not by much). Maybe nitrate limited GHA is brown or a very dark green/black. Anyhow...trying Vibrant today for the next several weeks. Fingers crossed.

I still think blacking the tank out for 3 days and manually removed GHA is the best option. I’m just against dosing unneeded stuff

BRS has decent ones for not too expensive and tunze has a nice 100$ ato

Took the fuge down beacuse of a flat worm issue. Hair was growing all over the back of the tank because of no fuge. Got a hare and it is now in check.

I have 2 big plans for my tank; change the lighting, rescape w/ new rocks. I mainly keep LPS and montis I like, but running a 4 bulb hybrid fixture w/ a AI Prime is way too powerful on an IM 25 lagoon. With my current rock layout, I don't have much room in the upper third for montis, or room on my rocks for many corals (75% of my corals are on the sandbed). So I'll be changing my lighting to 2 AI Prime 16s w/ 3D Reefing diffusers. On top of that I'm getting staxx rocks and using those for my hardscape and changing my sand to a slightly smaller grain, and keeping a 1 inch deep sandbed instead of a 4 inch sandbed like I have currently.

What's next ? Setting up my 75g in-wall with new live rock from TBsaltwater going bare bottom and get rid off those gsp corals that are invading my 40g.

Bare bottom would look really cool with the rock’s diversity. It may function a little better with sand though and personally I would do sand but I’m excited to see what you do!
