They didn't.... Macropharyngodon meleagris and Anampses meleagrides. Meleagris means guinea fowl in greek.

Lets start a fun conversation about the worst named things in the hobby. Could be fish, inverts, corals or equipment. What things have the most ironic names. My favorite is the foxface:

We should rename it lol

Was there really ever another option besides creative names for the vast assortment in zoas for example? They need names because they’re all EXTREMELY unique. I suppose you’d be ok being called “fat short balding human male” vs just like… kevin Dinkleheimer? Or whatever?

If you ask for a green zoa, you’ll have 200 options to pick from. How else would you identify what you want? But everyone knows exactly what a Rasta looks like!

Language, meaning, and names exist because without them, civilizations crumble.

The problem for me comes when the variations in color is much more vague. Take Euphyllia for example. ESPECIALLY TORCHES. Some, like the dragon soul might be somewhat unique and repeatable but most of them you could probably get away with “bright green with purple tips.” Or “dark gold with yellow tips.” Am I wrong?

I think we should just call corals by their species name with a descriptor in front, or genus if the exact species is unclear. The problem is that no two people pronounce the same latin name in the same way, and there's no way the vendors would agree to it. I'd rather buy something sold as a "Multicolor Acropora tenuis" than as an *insert vendor name here* Signature Rare Rainbow Splice Tropical Fruit Punch Acro, but I know lots of people wouldn't agree. If the lineage of the coral is particularly important, you could add a clarifier, like "Stuber's brown Acropora sp." It'd be much simpler.

Pretty sure that vendors these days sell corals for 20$ for each word in the name. It's even spreading to softies, I'm seeing "Metallic Green Ultra GSP" all over the place. Even with RFAs, they're all "ultra" when they used to just be green/orange/red/bicolor/whatever color it is.
I tried this. There’s a button on my site (no glitz mode) that literally Gets rid of all the names in favor of species names. And frankly, very few people gave a crap.

Any efforts I have personally made in this plight have fallen pretty flat. Not surprisingly I’m afraid

Most people really want a name no matter how silly or ridiculous. I mean have you seen some of mine? A lot are practically protesting the idea lol. And still people dig them. What are you gonna do?

Point taken. That is why my formal title is "Ultra HG OG Balding Human Male". $$$$$

Over here in my LFS we sell Zoas for £20 ($25.75) a frag. Some of them are fairly uncommon morphs;
Rasta
Pink Diamonds
Green Candy Apple
Red Candy Apple
Purple People Eater
Speckled Krak
Blue Ice
Sunny Ds
And more.

And for £40 ($52) we sell the same morphs but frags with 6-7+ heads. No morph prices are used and we just sell them for what that species is worth. Few people are going to buy a 1 head Krak for over 100.

The slope towards anarchy is real! :cool:
We certainly don’t celebrate that here.

Maybe you should simplify this:

BC 1
BC 2
BC 3….
BC n
BC n+1 could provide a simple solution for this universal societal problem?

If people can’t order the right “BC n” then they will reorder and business will start booming for you. :cool::star-struck::cool:

I once had a pretty little rainbow poccilopra that I called “Justin Bieber” but the name didn’t stick. We had a few good laughs with it as it grows like a weed and I had many frags that were sold at the LFS.

Civilization continues to crumble…:rolling-on-the-floor-laughing::smiling-face-with-sunglasses:

Some of my products... I wanted to name things like the "Wire Management Ecosystem Panel 9001A" or "The Skimmer of ABSOLUTE POWER 200" but my team keeps me from this..... make me sad :(.

One day...
