Would you buy wild caught stuff

?? I don’t need this type of lecture, I stated in my original answer to this thread that all my fish save for my tailspot blenny were tank raised. I just spent a fortune to get three tiny little nano gobies direct from Biota over a wild-caught assessor at my LFS.

My point w/the answer quoted is that it will not solve our environmental crisis on its own — there is much more to it than that.

Settle down Tex. Who lectured you.

It was a reply to you saying there are economic consequences and sustainment issues. No doubt. But again if the hobby doesn't move that way we will see more things similar to the ban like happened in Hawaii.

Biota - starry goby, 7 x sapphire damsels, radial filefish, matted filefish, forktail blenny, and considering their regal ATM. Obviously I'm biased.

I think you may have mistaken what I was saying. I was talking about fishing and sustainability more broadly. We are a drop in the bucket. Your argument is a different, although important, discussion.

And really? Settle down, Tex. Come on lol

Fair enough. I was steering the question in a different direction. I can agree with that. Sorry.

:D I don't know. No offense intended. The lecture part sort of threw me off but I can see why it was said now.

83% of reefers dont care about the environment
If you want to make a broad statement like that then I could also make a similar statement saying if you are alive then you really don't care about the environment either.

From a carbon footprint perspective, if someone is really concerned about the environment the best thing they could do is find the most shark infested waters in the world and start taking nightly sunset swims.

Yeah I just took it that way b/c it was a different but related topic.

I’m not sure that captive breeding fish for the pet trade is environmentally damaging, but I know fish farming for food has that issue.

Personally, I will ask at my LFS if they are wild caught or not and won’t buy them if they are. I’m talking about specifically fish keep in mind.

Is my LFS being truthful? I would hope so but I take it for what it’s worth.

This is how I see it: If a fish is born in a glass box and spends its whole life there, it doesn’t know anything else, so there’s no harm. But to take a fish out of an endless ocean and put it in a glass box? That seems kind of f’d up to me…

just my 2¢

I Voted yes but with that stated. I try to by aquacultured when possible (ie all my sps and some lps). I would buy aquacultured fish for a little more $ than wild caught but options are limited. The progress however that is being made is amazing so hopefully in the near future there would be no need but we are not there yet for everything

If available and it is a fish I want, I will buy captive bred because I believe they are healthier and have had less stress and therefore a greater chance of long term survival. Either way, you are supporting a hobby that uses wild caught specimens. Also, how many millions of clownfish do you think were wild harvested prior to clowns being predominantly captive bred? Yellow tangs? Marine Bettas? You can do your part to only buy captive bred fish, but you also can’t fault anyone who does not.

30 feet down on some reef on the other side of the world is NOT my enviroment.
I'm vegaterian, I don't eat any form of meat.
I love a good steak. Like crabs even more.
Even more carbon 14 is put into the air from wild caught fish, think about the boat that would have to carry the fish, catching fish causes lots of pollution.
I have a boat. It like all out boat motors on boats dumps the exhaust straight into the water as a noise suppresser. I fish and eat the fish. I run it as fast as it will go because its fun. I love boating

We are all different and individuals. Reef On

Is it crazy to think that wild caught are slightly harder to keep alive and well in an aquarium?

I am new (less than a year) with a tank that was 3 years old from a friend, I added fish and have seen and learned from blogs like this one, that the % of fish brought home from the store (LFS) that do not make it is far higher than those already in an aquarium atmosphere.

I have failed at several species from a store, then I took a plunge and purchased a fish from another reefer on a blog. (Knock on wood-I hope I'm not jinxing myself) It is doing very well in my set up and seems happy.

Me thinking about the idea that we bring home these fish that are stressed from being caught and shipped so many times until you buy them, it is no wonder they don't eat, hide and get stress related diseases. I know the one I got from someone was once one of them as well, but for me, the previous owner worked through the teaching how to eat, and live in a glass box, that most never learn or get comfortable with...just a thought from a relative newbie to this addictive hobby (lifestyle)!!!

Wild collection is slowly coming to an end.
It’s probably a good thing.
As a result, the amount of small frag operations has increased.
……and the price….skyrocketed.
