If my theory is wrong, then whats the right theory?
Reef keeping isn’t causing the problem. I’ve never seen in a documentary where reef keeping caused massive reef die off. I think the large groups of parrot fish eat more coral than people take from the wild.

I prefer to get captive bred when I can because they do better, but almost none of the fish in the trade are captive bred. Hopefully more will come up but many of my favorite fish are simply not worth breeding in captivity right now.

Even more carbon 14 is put into the air from wild caught fish, think about the boat that would have to carry the fish, catching fish causes lots of pollution.
you are keeping a 24/7 hot and brightly lit box of ocean water in your living room and you're complaining about the fuel used by the boat to catch fish for hundreds of said boxes of ocean water?

I rather captive bred ,unless 1 day I will have another 150 gallon all golden butterfly tank then they will be caught wild because nobody breeds them yet. Red sea all fish tank oh yea..

Here's my opinion:

The corals are getting bleached, fast. Fish that rely on those corals to survive die. Fish that rely on the fish that rely on the coral die. What I'm trying to say is the lower something is on the food chain, the more important it is. If the lowest thing on the food chain dies, everything dies. If the highest thing on the food chain dies, nothing happens. If all reefs die this would have a terrible affect on the ocean. Were above the ocean on the food chain, so if the ocean dies, we die. We need to leave da fish alone!
The aquarium trade is a tiny fraction of a fraction of the impact on reefs. In fact, in places where good mariculture and capture protocols are in place the effect is positive because it provides alternatives to food fishing which is much much worse for the environment. Anyways, collecting clownfish is not killing the reefs. That's climate change. And nothing we individually do will come close to solving the systemic issues that are causing climate change. It will not be fixed by any amount of individual "carbon footprint" optimization. That whole concept has been sold to us as a way to shift blame off of our political and economic systems and onto individuals who have no choice whether or not to live under said systems.

83% of reefers dont care about the environment
How can u make that inference based on a yes or no poll. I think a majority of us do but we realize that this industry is sustainable and supports economies in those so called exploited collection area. Hawaii should b open. It’s a highly regulated fishery and what was collected for the ornamental industry wasn’t destroying the reefs. Also australia. Look at Cairns. They sustainably harvest and move from site to site. When they return to a previous area u would nvr have know it was touched in the past.

what- ask around many of the younger reefers are on their way to entering the industry for marine biology or aquaculture.
plus captive bred fish are more expensive and are not always available. in my country we have only had TWO biota shipments. the rest of our captive bred shipments are from taiwan and come once a month. what do the taiwan shipments contain? only clownfish and hawkfish.
why should we also spend another $50-$100 for a captive bred fish the size of your thumbnail?
this is a very niche hobby with not many reefers we do not have a very large impact on the environment.
however, if captive bred fish become cheaper and more available with more species(like more tangs, wrasses and scorpionfish) i will be buying more captive bred fish.

Sound good to me!

sweetie do you even do your research on how coral collecting is done? it’s done by taking a few small frags in the big reef and growing them in a farm, next frag of that frag a few months later will be transported into a frag aquarium where it is raised to sell its own frags. low footprint, higher turnout

Ok, reefing isn't a problem, cars and generators are.

I think mother earth is in control not cars and generators. Mother earth is going to do her thing. Mankind has no control over it. Sure, mankind could destroy everything here but mother earth would still be here and thrive. Do you think cars and generators is what got the dinosaurs? Tyrannosaurus Rex drove a Cadillac! :D

Yes I think your right

I do prefer captive-bred, but it does significantly limit the selection (in particular of inverts, as it goes close to zero). I do have a captive-bred goby with a breathing defect, which probably would not have made it in the wild.

The day is coming when there won't be enough healthy reef for wild collecting. And, honestly, a lot of the sentiments in this thread is why. Tropical Atlantic is a great example. Anyone here have any Acropora palmata in their tank? HI... Indonesia... Tonga... How is that wild-harvested liverock bin in your LFS looking? Recent European import bans. Recent US legislation being proposed.

Preppers are what we need to be. I feel like there is a meme in here but with LFS shelves empty...
