Would you buy wild caught stuff

Voted IDK because I do not really know where all the fish comes from I would prefer to buy captive bred or aquaculture fish, but I realized that I got some wild caught.
We have already endangered some species, because they became too popular and were overly collected.
I would much prefer to buy all my fish captive bred. It would also reduced the chance to introduce diseases in my tank.
Some company such as ORA and BIOTA claim that they release some aquaculture fish in the wild for a certain number of fish that they sell. That Is great, if they diversified and not release only one type the fish.
I think the best is aquaculture. Most of the eggs of the fish die in the wild. If we can raise a bigger percentage of surviving fish, by facilitating their survival, it will allow us to buy some and also release some, and in that way keeping a balance.

I’ll bite…
In a perfect world, we could get all captive bred fish, but realistically this is not the case. I (and many others I’m sure) won’t deprive myself of a fish I would want to keep because it isn’t captive bred. If there is an option for captive, I’ll usually get that one though.
It also takes the wild fish industry to create captive fish. If we all stuck with what is captive bred, two things would happen: first, we’d have pretty low diversity in our tanks. Second, there would be little demand to captive breed more fish and we’d have much less advances.
There is also eventually a startling difference in quality and health between captive and wild fish. Assuming fish were caught safely, wild fish are often much nicer looking and overall healthier than captive ones. Captive fish eventually suffer from severe inbreeding, especially in fancy designer fish, and have some big genetic defects. Look at many cichlids and you will see this divide.

I prefer wild caught. Its cheaper it builds diversity. I see no harm on collecting and owning wild caught. Its far more sustainable than commercial or recreational fishing. Which I also support.

I took that as we are the highest thing on the food chain. We kill the sharks :(
No doubt humans are at the top of food chain ( unless fall off a boat and boat drives off in middle of Atlantic ocean then I wouldn't like a shark circling me and nudging me and taking little nips at me to see if I'm edible or not ha ha .
And we as humans have caused alot of the environmental problems we now may or may not pose ,very deep conversations can be had on if we should carry on like we are or not,but to get the whole world back to hunting your own meat or growing your own food isn't going to happen in our big citys as just simply not enough room or animals to hunt close by.aone would have to drive for hours to find food to hunt and imagine 8.2 million people in London. All driving out to countryside to hunt ha ha
Very complicated and I don't envy all the top brass who have to decide which way there country should go to try improve the situations the world is in but I simply do not know enough about what's going on tbh if I'm truthfull

I voted I don't know as I don't know. My initial thought was captive bred is probably more morally acceptable to me. But after thinking about it, it depends on a few things and I don't know enough about how they are caught and the impact on wild populations and stuff like that. I like the idea that there is a mix of captive and wild caught available as it means we are less likely to overfish and damage wild populations.
Also worth a thought on survival rates of wild caught being shipped around the world, if 10, 20, 30% or whatever it is die before they reach wherever they're going, thats also a waste.

And guys, I'm not trolling I just like forming interesting discussion, oh, btw you all changed my mind on wild caught stuff. Now I would buy wild caught stuff, and I'm sorry about my stupid food chain thing, it was just a thought. Thankyou all fir correcting me and making me smarter.

I buy wild and captive bred ,
Captive bred is of course ideal , try buying a wild anemone vs a tank raised “captive bred”. The wild one will have much harder time acclimating to aquarium life than the other that was born into it , not to mention the diseases. Captive bred fish are the same , they are used to aquarium life and are better fitted for it. Anytime captive bred is an option I will go for it , less chance of parasites , diseases , stress , and overall a happier/adjusted fish to enjoy. Same thing in the snake trade, captive bred snakes are more docile and adjusted to human contact

Well this was an entertaining read.

I am still waiting for my captive breed peppermint angelfish... In the meantime sign me up for all of the wild caught fishes.
Really? Not one bite on my captive breed peppermint angelfish?

I believe that buying wild-caught fish has its benefits but if you can find captive-bred fish like clowns, there is no excuse. My opinion on this is that certain reefs are already on their way to extinction. I think that it is better to catch fish from reefs that will inevitably going to die because the fish will die on their own from oil or other factors.

I not sure how old you are but you have mentioned your young and at school so @Obsessed with fish hopefully you have ( and us all) learnt many things in life are more complicated than we first assume them to be ,and good to put ourselves in other persons shoes and try think things through a little more about statements we make or things we decide to do as sometimes what we initially believe are true turn out not to be or not to full extent we thought.
I'm not saying this to put you or anyone down as myself and everyone have made mistakes or not thought something through countless times in our lives and sure myself will do it countless times more in the future but aslong as we have good intentions and do t mean to cause no harm and apologise when we realise we wrong and most importantly learn from our mistakes then we on tje right tracks ^_^
And one thing thing my dad said to me when young always stuck in my head and that being " a clever man learns from his own mistakes but a wise man learns from others mistakes "
Anyway hope all is well with you and anyone reading this thread and good luck with your fishy friends whether they wild collected or captive bred ^_^

Said in what is maybe the nicest/kindest way possible for the situation lol

To be honest I cannot stand how "some" online store price the captive bred fish.

example: regal angel

a wild 3 inch one would run you about 200-300 depending on your LFS.

a imported Bali captive bred regal cost $250 AT MY LFS.

However
please tell me why some store online are slapping a captive bred angel and charging $600+ For one, supposing that the $250 at my LFS are already making a somewhat profit.

I'm all for captive bred and fully support it for maybe helping endangered or limited fish, but I would think twice before buying captive fish again while having no problem buying a wild fish

The captive breed regals are pretty new to the market. Yes the price is silly.

What I don't understand is how I can purchase a captive bread Biota Yellow tang cheaper from Biota than I can from my LFS.

I am not complaining but that doesn't help LFS out.

I'm sure biota sells it for cheaper to LFS for them to make a profit. how cheap I do not know nor care, but there is surely a suggested market price and it's up to LFS to follow it or not.
