Quick question. I am just getting my plumbing hooked up and I see some people use a check valve on the return and some don’t. Should I use one?

I am quite sure my sump can handle the back flow of the pump did stop.

The water line is where I am pointing.

My opinion in life is anything mechanical can fail. Clog, stick or something so if it’s not needed don’t use it.

I have never used one in any of my setups. I will be implementing one soon when I plumb a second tank into the same shared sump. The sump won't have the capacity to take both tanks should the power go off, etc. So, I'll prevent the second tank from draining into the sump for that reason. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it.

Agreed, Don't use a check valve if not needed. Just make sure to not put your return too deep in the water so your sump will handle the back siphon.

please tell me you chose reclaimed barn wood... I love it, but have only seen it used on a couple of stands. Apparently the reefing community doesn't find the old worn look endearing. ;-)

Yes, I am waiting for them to arrive. I have only dry fitted from the wall to the sump room.

The sump is easier to work on and upgrade equipment. The skimmer I have was too tall for under the stand as well.

Ammonia depends on how much dead stuff is in the rock. You'll want to check nitrite, too. I personally wouldn't run the lights yet but would run the skimmer.
