Anyone else bothered by all the plastic waste we produce in this hobby?

salt buckets n bags, fish bags and coolers, every additive comes in plastic, fish food, all the plastic used in shipping, it’s everywhere!!

Its the aspect of the hobby that disgusts me the most. Then you factor in all the plastic waste we use to import fish that have high mortality rates and I feel even worse.

it’s funny when I see people saying you need to use LED because it’s more efficient or “green” or use this pump or buy this coral because it’s sustainable…

how can we fix it?

it’s actually made me consider leaving the hobby at times but im so deep that my
Livelihood depends on this industry so that would be tough.

I know I’m part of the problem, I just wish we could make it less wasteful

Metal and paper don’t work well in this hobby…. But I see your point. You can reuse buckets and some small plastic bottles…

As an “end user”, there is not a whole lot of power we have to institute change in terms of materials and what not utilized in supply chains etc. however, you always have the power of the mighty dollar. put your money into reduction, cleanup, and so on.

I subscribe to multiple ocean based clean up organizations in efforts to “offset” my own consumption. I’ve also made efforts in my personal life and home to reduce single use items, such as hemp grocery bags, organic cotton fruit and vegetable bags, I use a hemp and beeswax lunch bag, re usable mason jars for lunch and bamboo re usable cutlery etc.

Does it make it “better” in the long run, probably not. My efforts are but a small fraction of an immense problem. But, it makes me happy, and I believe if everyone did even a few small things, it could affect big change.

I really like having all of my salt buckets around for random tasks.
There are bigger fish to fry in the realm of sustainability but I agree with where you are coming from.

It just bums me out

I’ve been Doing this for so long I know it’s made my carbon footprint way worse

im Not trying to drain anyone on being in the hobby, we are all In the same boat

I reuse whatever I can and buy in bulk but I still see the plastic everywhere

so far some good ideas above, thanks!!

Why is that funny? I cant make decisions that get salt to my door without bags or a bucket. I can make decisions to be as "green" as possible. I can make decisions to buy aquacultured corals vs wild due if i consider it more eco friendly. Certainly does not make this a "green" hobby, but i dont discount what anyone does to lessen their impact even if they still get coral shipped in coolers.

It’s funny in my Mind because nothing in this hobby is green

some people argue very hard about certain products being the right one to use because it has less footprint or its the future

the future is bleak with All the waste and take we do

maybe funny is the wrong word

maybe ironic?

I see your point

I understand being as “green” as possible and commend you for that

there is just a bit of irony in that argument

There has to be better ways

Green is a feel good buzzword that is being sold to you. Buy it up if you like. Look up the mining and refining process for all of the rare earth elements in an electric car battery and then argue how green it is.

We can control our waste production to an extent but anything beyond only consuming what one needs to survive is by definition excess and thus not green.

The plastic is most concerning to me in our industry because the majority of it ends up back in the ocean, killing the things we already take and kill

again, I Only say this stuff because it’s on my Mind

I know im guilty and I’m Not Judging anyone
