All the plastic!

Leave.
Lol.
I'm sorry but this hobby is pure joy for the user or a $ grab. Nothing more or less. We keep exotic animals for our viewing pleasures from around the world.
Aquacultured. Maricultured. Wild. Captive bred. I've seen it all.
In the end if the plastic waste is what's bothering you... well.
Lol.

Anyone else bothered by all the plastic waste we produce in this hobby?

salt buckets n bags, fish bags and coolers, every additive comes in plastic, fish food, all the plastic used in shipping, it’s everywhere!!

Its the aspect of the hobby that disgusts me the most. Then you factor in all the plastic waste we use to import fish that have high mortality rates and I feel even worse.

it’s funny when I see people saying you need to use LED because it’s more efficient or “green” or use this pump or buy this coral because it’s sustainable…

how can we fix it?

it’s actually made me consider leaving the hobby at times but im so deep that my
Livelihood depends on this industry so that would be tough.

I know I’m part of the problem, I just wish we could make it less wasteful

yes... but I work in a hospital...

I get things need to be disposible...

BUT DO WE REALLY NEED TO USE STYROFOAM CUPS? Every time we re-fill, we need to get a new cup (for infection purposes). Would it be so bad to switch to recyclable cups? I am constantly dumping out 'warm' unfinished water in the styrofoam ones anyways...

and WHY does every single pill need to come up in a plastic bag? Like they are packaged as pills should be then put into plastic baggies... and not just one bag per patient... like a plastic bag for each type of pill for each patient then put into a bigger bag... you could legit have 5+ little baggies inside one bigger bag... per pt... and theres ofc 100's of pts in the hospital... and the medication is sent up about twice a day...

it is no unnecessary. We dump them out into the nurse server anyways.

We could use re-usable containers... or paper?

At least here you need to ship coral/fish in styrofoam to keep it living so it makes sense. There is no excuse for some of the hospital waste.

I reuse plastic bags from fish stores for when I sell frags. I reuse waste water from RODI to refill my pool. I dump dirty water change on the paver driveway to kill weeds. I try when I can...

If you look at the extra water and electricity we use, it's pretty crazy...but that's life.

I also don't have kids and never plan to have kids so that's my biggest contribution to society. Less people. Less burden on the planet. Team Thanos.

Green is a feel good buzzword that is being sold to you. Buy it up if you like. Look up the mining and refining process for all of the rare earth elements in an electric car battery and then argue how green it is.

We can control our waste production to an extent but anything beyond only consuming what one needs to survive is by definition excess and thus not green.
Glad this was said, it's 100% accurate

Crazy that passed emissions testing! You must not believe in license plates….lol

If you’re life is comfortable, there’s going to be pollution no matter what. They only way to reduce plastic is to use alternative methods, but plastic was created to reduce those alternative methods.

Nice

you can take that in the HOV lane with only One passenger since it’s got a green pass

smart!

How do we fix the plastic waste though?!

i Wonder How Many fish eat my exhausted DI resin

Maybe we can get a Minnesota based reef maintenance service company to develop a proprietary bacteria blend to break it down through a biological process.

Win win.
