Amphidinium Dinoflagellate Treatment Methods

I would rather keep NO3 up using inorganic nitrate rather than over feeding. Over feeding can fuel dinos in some cases IMO. What kind of corals do you have?

I have a small torch and frogspawn frag, a couple of cheap acans, a plate, gsp, Xenia, and a small frag of zoa. Here is a pic of my sand bed, anybody elses look like this? If I blow off the sandbed at night, it is spotless all night and into the next day until the lights have been on for a couple of hours then it comes right back. I have never seen any bubbles in it so I didn't know it was Dino until I saw it under a microscope.

That looks pretty typical to me. At night amphidinium goes down in to the sand rather than entering the water column like some other species do.
 
I am seeing some unhappy snails now. Three of the star snails were eating the hair algae and dinos that is on the rocks and now they are laying upside down on the sand. Sigh. What should I do?
 
@taricha now I have unhappy snails, dinos on the rocks. The star snails that were eating on the rocks went upside down. ;Shifty
First, pull the snails alive or dead to a holding tank. Almost certain that you have toxic kind of outbreak at the moment. Dead herbivores fuel these blooms very well. Get the sand/rock samples under a microscope and see what we're dealing with.

That’s a bunch of prorocentrum. They are like ostreopsis in toxins, but need more encouragement to go into UV. Reducing light time can force these cells to take to the water.
 
I've read through most of this thread and believe I'm battling a case of amph. There have been a couple of pics here that show amph moving down to the sand at night surrounding the rock work which is very similar to my tank and where I first thought it was flow, I moved my MP40's around and can comfortably say flow is sufficient around the base of the rock so it's not due to this. Water parameters are in check (I unfortunately do not have a phos tester but everything else is stable and in check) and even have coralline starting to grow in various places.

I don't have a microscope at the moment so can't be 100% but everything I've read here seems to point to amph. I'm also battling a pretty bad case of GHA so I'm contemplating in removing my sand bed to rinse along with the rock to scrub and spray with peroxide.

I have a total water volume of 100G and trying to figure out how best to remove the sand in effort not to spread the amph. Would I be safe scooping the sand out or will that just spread them in the water column and not help with the cause? I've also thought about syphoning the sand out and running it through a pillow case (to act as a large filter) but not sure if the pillow case will retain the amph or not.

Any help would be appreciative! I'm on my last wits end and my patience has pretty much been exhausted. If this doesn't work, I'll likely sell off the livestock and corals and shut down the tank :(
 
Do you have a pic? I’ve gained ground on the fight against mine this week by dosing nitrates and manual removal, my nitrates were pretty low, what are your nitrates sitting at?

Appreciate the quick response! My nitrates were between 2-5 but I've had them higher at 10 as well and I really didn't see or notice a difference with them being higher.

I spent the better part of yesterday scrubbing rock and soaking in peroxide as well as pulled all my sand. Using a pillow case to catch the sand worked really well and I was quite amazed towards the end of just how much crap it caught. Obviously using all new water would've been best, I just didn't have that luxury so I reused most of the water after filtered through the pillow case.

Tank was a bit cloudy for a few hours but quickly cleared as my skimmer went absolutely nuts. I have a LifeReef that filled the cup in a couple hours that I had to dump which later it calmed down a bit. I also threw some carbon in as a failsafe. I still have to finalize my rockscape as the fish were pretty mad at me towards the end; one of my clowns had to be netted as it didn't matter where I was working in the tank, she was having none of it. My longnose hawkfish I thought I was going to loose but this morning he's swimming around as he normally does and perching on the side of the tank and some of the rock. My plan today is to do another water change after I get my rock situated and then let things be.

The bare bottom is actually pretty nice so far. I spent a ton of time rinsing my sand and plan on laying it out to completely dry incase I decide to reuse but right now, the family is liking that bare bottom.

We'll see how things progress and I hope I saved the tank along with my sanity. No idea what amph dinos do in a bare bottom tank or if it's even possible but I really hope they're gone!

Once I get the rockscape redone and the tank settles, I'll post a pic

Actually I’m not sure I’d change the water, always made mine worse as removing nitrates seems to fuel these things. When I blow mine out of the substrate and off my rocks my water is also cloudy for several hours and my skimmer output increases. Could this be due to us pushing the Dino into the water column? I also have a small UV installed, not sure what impact it’s having but my Dino is definitely receding. Might really help in your case since the Dino can’t recede into the substrate.

Freeing gunk, organics, nutrients, bacteria etc into the water from the sand would increase skimmer output. Dinos don't really.
 
Hey all, I just got rid of these guys for the third time in my tank. I'll share my observations and how I dealt with them.

First time I had them was about five years ago when I started getting into corals. At the time people were treating dinoflagellates with hydrogen peroxide and nutrient removers like gfo, so I tried that as well. In the end, I didn't get rid of them. I found a nicer, larger tank that I upgraded to and started over. First tank had undetectable po4 and around 30 nitrates.

In my new tank I've had it twice. First time it happened I tried nutrient control and hydrogen peroxide. Those did nothing, even with heavy gravel vacs, siphoning, bubble scrubbing, blackouts. At the time I was running carbon, a skimmer, and vodka dosing. My nitrates were elevated in the 40ppm range but my phosphates were always zero. So after many unsuccessful attempts to get rid of it I went with the "dirty method". Against all common coral keeping advice, I stopped vodka dosing, removed the carbon, turned off the skimmer for half the day and took my gfo offline. It took a few weeks, but day by day they went away until the tank was perfect again.

Second time was a few months back. Tank looked great and perimeters were fine, been using an algae scrubber to much success, but my phosphates were "high" at about .1 ppm. Wanting to get more into sps, I added gfo to bring it down. Within about a week or so the dinos were back. Once again, I removed the carbon, took my scrubber offline (it was completely engulfed in dinos at this point), took out the gfo, and let the tank go. All i did was make sure it was aerated and had good circulation. Once again they disappeared over a period of about three weeks.

Here's what I took away from my experiences:

- Gfo was the common denominator. Every time I used it I ended up driving my phosphates too low, which I believe is what is causing the blooms. From what I've read on these forums in the past couple years the vast majority of reefers are getting dino blooms when their phosphates hit zero (or close to). From the older reefers I hear that Dinos were not very prevalent years back, probably because they didn't have the capability to reduce nutrients to as low of levels as we do.

- Amphidinium doesn't seem to be super toxic. I had no large scale die offs in my tanks.

- UV did nothing for these, I used it every time I had them. It's possible it does kill them but there's too many in the sandbeds to kill them all. I was using it in my sump, I couldn't tell you if putting it in the display would help.

- Gravel vacs and siphoning helped, but I don't feel its super important when trying to get rid of them. They would be back in full force then next day when I did it. The last time I had a dino bloom I barely did any siphoning, they just slowly dwindled down to nothing as time went on.

- Blackouts do nothing. They always come back within a couple days.

- I did dose waterglass to raise silicates and try to out compete them with diatoms. While I did notice some nice sponge and diatom growth (especially on the glass) I can't say for certain if it actually helped reduce the dinos. Sorry.

- Raising ph did nothing. I had my tank heavily aerated and dosed with kalk to keep ph up to around 8.6 to 8.7 at times and it didn't both them.

- H2o2 did nothing against this species whatsoever. Obviously other people have had luck with it so it still may be a viable tool.

- Around the time the dinos were being defeated the glass and sump started growing green algae again. I do have some hair algae growing on some rocks but my clean up crew munches it down quickly.

- Ordering pods and dosing phytoplankton, in my experience, did nothing. The pod population did explode to insane levels though (looked like swarms of flies in my fuge), which was pretty fun.

- Adding straight up 'biodiversity' did nothing. I ordered garfs gunk and tried getting nice pieces of live rock full of goodies when I went to local fish stores. The creepy crawlies I got were cool but it didn't do anything for slowing the dinos.

- Bacterial additives did nothing for me, including Vibrant.

- No medications helped, including Dino X.

- Water changes neither reduced nor created more dinos.

As of today my tank is sparkling clean from dinoflagellates. I am no longer trying to keep my nutrients at ultra low levels, all it has caused me is headaches. All I use for filtration is an algae scrubber (which works incredibly well) and my skimmer part time. I'm not using carbon at this time as I see no real reason to. I'll most likely never use GFO again. I know many reefers use is it effectively, it's just not something I want to deal with again. My nitrates are sitting at around 15 ppm and phosphates are just over .1ppm and all my corals are quite happy. Hope this helps someone fight this scourge!

Completely agree, thank you for sharing. I didn’t start winning my battle until I got my nitrates and phosphates up. They are still there but are definitely going away.
 
I'm happy to inform that my dino amphidinium issue has been solved by:

1. Introducing copepods
2. Making sure PO4 and NO3 are not undetectable. I'm trying to keep them at PO4 0.08 ppm and NO3 at 0.5 - 1.0 ppm. I use Lanthanum Chloride to lower my PO4 once in a while and dose NO3 (Sodium Nitrate) on a daily basis.

I used to hate algae, but now (up to a point) I think it is a sign of a healthy tank and an indication of dino free conditions. At least the weak green film algae on the glass I can live with.

I have been dino amphidinium free for many months now. I'm sure it is there, but not an issue anymore.
 
So it’s been over 3 months since I started sponge excel dosing. I only did it for the first month and kept patient. I just started cleaning out excess garbage in the tank last week. Here’s a pic of what’s there. Way less dinos than 3 months ago. So I’ll stay the course.

I may buy Ocean Magik and some copepods from Algae Barn to see what happens. Would be nice to get my tank back.

I am assuming that these are Amphidimium Dinos. Looking for a confirmation.

I am dosing Si, but just recently upped the dosage to 10 drops per 38 gal twice per day. My last ICP-OES test had me at 0.099 Si. I went overboard in December/January and they were around 5ppm (not 0.5, but 5) Through syphoning and WC I was back at 0.099 in May. Just sent out another test Friday July 5th. P04 was 0.88ppm and No3 50ppm.

I dosed with Rea Sea Reef Nutrition A and B and Dino's went nuts, so I am wondering if the amino acids, fatty acids along with Carbon dosing feed the dinos more that other items.
