Be taken seriously!! Post those tanks!!

ya did. You been reading this long? Scroll up. Come back.
I gave all the facts you didn't believe me.
That's human.
I get it.
You take great pictures. You'll figure it out eventually.

TBH, I don't remember you or the conversation. Don't take it personal. When I log off, I don't think back about this forums. This is a hobby for me and I separate it from my daily life. I keep it that way because once I intertwine both, this is no longer a hobby.

You gave me your best relation in terms for understanding the issue at hand. That doesn't mean I see the same way. You see no other solution than "that's the way it is, take it or leave it"; I don't.

You take great pictures.
Also, I don't think my pics are that great. I can still see improvements needed in all photos I take. I am still learning but I can back what I state with all the data needed. I don't give advice on subjects I don't know anything about to avoid debates and making myself look like a(n) ...

There's been a bit of joking so I gotta clarify, were you serious, or no?
By all means no lol. In the beginning of this thread there was alot of talk about experts and how nobody is an expert so I made a joke about it.

It's hard to tell anything in here anymore!!!

Excuse me, I have tank build threads I must go read.... evidently they are of great importance that I have been missing. ;-)

The OP is stating that there are a lot of "fake saltwater experts" out there. They often regurgitate information from someone else without understanding what it truly means or if it is even true. There are loads of these characters on the forums who give false advice for self-gratification. They often probe the forums for topics, google the answer, and write the searched answer as their own in which most cases the pasted answer can't be followed up with further information or intelligent conversation. They often speak with IME...... but can not back their experience with documentation. They often have "an answer" to most problems but clearly can't overcome the same problem in their system. They paste an opinion on a subject and later change that opinion months later to please the crowd.

Need I go on?

It doesn't really bother me too much that they regurgitate others experience.. As long as they know it's right. But having no real experience on said topic how could they possibly? How many fish have you honestly seen dead because someone told them that this green stuff that smells like pickles/peppers.. If you dump a gallon of that in your tank it will cure your poor powder blue of his ich problem.

Just an example..
Around 6 months ago I stumbled across a post where a newer kid in the hobby had a 125. He had 3 tangs an angel, a couple clowns and I can't remember what else. One of his tangs had ich. This guy had him convinced this magic product was totally reef safe from marineland. He went to the store, picked up a bottle.. Me not being sold on any of the "reef safe" remedies and have never heard of such a product from marineland. I asked him send me a picture of the bottle before using it.
image.jpeg

Now I can't say for sure what would've happened to his livestock had he dumped the whole bottle of "ick" treatment into his salwater tank based solely on the advice of some guy on Facebook. But it probably wouldn't have ended positively...

Yeah this is just one of those threads I suppose.

The guy that convinced the beginner hobbyist to try that product is the type of person I described in the post you quoted. On the other hand, something can be learned from this. Everyone now know that you can't use that stuff in a marine tank through documentation from that poster's thread. That is the correct information to regurgitate. That information can, also, be cited and shared from forum to forum to prevent that from happening to someone else.

People do stupid stuff based on people's stupid advice all the time everywhere. That's life. You help who you can, but sometimes ya gotta let some go...... sometimes people don't listen to their own common sense, let alone someone else's.

OR, you can show them your tank thread and then they have to listen to you... I kid... I kid.

I want to thank the people that took offense to my post and posted to defend their knowledge and experience.

I'm going to point the finger at twillard... Maybe twillard is a great guy, maybe he spends hours of day helping people on forums, maybe he as a garage of aquariums that have been thriving for 20 years, and maybe he doesn't share all that. But this is what I see him share...

"But what if I grow bryopsis to find a meaningful solution to it besides the common (nutrients are too high)?
I dont have valued information because you will see it in my tank even though I put it there?"

Your first foray into the hobby and you want to become a Bryopsis expert...

Your going to experiment to find a meaningful solution for Bryopsis...

And you post a swamp of an aquarium....

Did you have a beautiful and successful longterm aquarium, that one day Bryopsis took over and destroyed? Show me the successful tank, show me what Bryopsis did to it, show me what you did to try to resolve the problem.

And now you declare your position in the hobby is to find a meaningful bryopsis solution. You show 1 tank, and you can't even see that bryopsis is flourishing in that tank. A meaningful solution is going to be found by having a quantity of identical tanks, with identical situations, and varying the variable on a few tanks while maintaining multiple control tanks.

You could put a television in front of your Bryopsis tank, run Seinfeld 24/7, and when the Bryopsis starts to die off - You now have a Bryopsis solution... And given you enthusiasm for your Bryopsis project, your might go out right away and start posting on every Bryoposis thread that Seinfeld will fix it.

In my opinion it's these kinds of limited experiences and knowledge that people seeking help should stop and question as to who is giving them advice and why they should listen to it.

And just cause you have done something once, doesn't mean you did it correctly or right, and should necessarily take on the teacher roll for those with less knowledge than your own.

Now I also realize that posting in forums the intent, personality, and humor that we wish to write with cannot always be seen. And maybe Twillard was posting that tank as joke, and we were all suppose to laugh, drink some beer, and post a smiley face emojicon. I use Twillard as the example, because it was there, I have nothing personal against Twillard, I do not know his history, I don't know what he has posted in the past.

And as can be seen even in this thread, there are people out their, with the best intentions, helping people who don't have the experience or knowledge to do so, but posting with such high opinions of themselves they don't see how they are misguiding those that need help, and they clearly don't understand the original intention of this thread and that it applies to them.

And there's always at least one to stand at the sideline and mock. Even when you heard them the first time...

But thanks for that ;) the intent of the post was to help.. And at the same time motivate some of our long time members that don't have a tank thread to make one. But sometimes it's just gotta be a bigger deal than what it needed to be.

On that note. It's been a long day.. Good night my reefing friends :) see you all tomorrow.

Totally missing the point. I'm talking about the people that have no idea what they're talking about and are seriously not qualified to do so yelling and screaming just for the sake of trying to be the one who can yell the loudest.

This thread wasn't picking at anyone in particular.. And actually R2R is (as stated previously) is the best when it comes to this. But if anyone feels like it's picking at YOU spicificly than maybe you're guilty of giving advice in areas you don't have any business giving? You all either know the type I'm talking about or are the type I'm talking about. I'm not sure there's much of an in the middle.

I've been a member here forever.. When Facebook grew I naturally just went that way along with the wave. Recently I realized that the people I'm referring to (over there!) is the rule and not the exception.. Between that and no record of a conversation for the next guy having the same problem.. That is why I've become more active here and far less there.

I know what point you are trying to get across, and for some parts I totally agree. Where we disagree is the "your display needs to be top notch to justify any advice you give as credible to me." You titled the thread be taken seriously, post your tanks. Not sure how that's even credible. As stated before any person can have a insane full blown sps tank in their home they can post pics of, but in reality it's taken care of by others. So the having a successful tank argument isn't going great anywhere.

In other words, you could have gotten your point across by wording it different. Your thread title and your OP are basically saying that unless you have a nice tank your advice isn't good here.

But this is what happens 1000s of time a day on every popular forum. There are very few experts who post their knowledge. There are a few, and I don't have to name names, who are diligent in their attempt to help as many people as possible.

But for some of us, it's frustrating (if not infuriating) to constantly have our opinion condemned by multiple people who have not been in this hobby long enough to go through a full box of salt.
This is one of the biggest reason that a lot of us old timers dont post on the forums. Its not worth the argument from someone with only a small amount of experience. Just last week I had someone post in two different responses that I didnt know what I was talking about regarding a 90G tank that was having success but was not perfect. Thier LPS were doing ok but there SPS were dying. I suggested more flow. The person responded "they have two pumps in the tank. That is plenty".
IMO, it was not and after the two responses I took it behind the scenes and asked for evidence of credibility. After all, I have 10 years of great success with SPS. I was still never given any other than a simple, I know what I'm talking about, just take my word for it".

Anyhow, Here is my current tank . Taken a month ago on Christmas eve.
Also if you want to see some of my successes. Check out my Tank of the Month thread. It has a pretty good history of my successes from the last decade.

I don't take it personally
I never say that's the way it is I do say IME
In some cases it pretty E.
Point is someone corrected an expert who isn't an expert the op didn't know which was witch. They had to make the choice
And that's life
Thier choice and yours don't keep me up at night.
