Booger Sized Frags: What are your thoughts?

This is officially the smallest frag I have ever seen. At that size, I could sell a rice grain size of any no name chalice I want and sell it as a super rare chalice. By the time you grew it to a size that you knew for sure it was fake, it'd be 10 years
Speaking of booger sized frags, I received this frag of the Tangerine Dreams that was supposed to be a whole lot larger than the frag I actually received.
The vendor posted a WYSIWYG picture, which is the reason why I purchased the coral; However, when I finally received it, the Tangerine Dream was litteraly the size of a grain of rice.
Below is my picture. I had to take it with a ruler to see exactly how small the frag was.
I think all vendors selling corals should post a WYSIWYG along with a ruler to show exactly the size of the coral. If they don't post a picture with a ruler, then the coral shouldn't be allowed to sell on Reef2Reef or any website.

Unfortunately, I lost the little guy this week.
The stress of being so small (a booger off of a booger) didn't allow this wonderful chalice to survive.
I will never purchase anything from this Reef2Reef vendor again.
In fact, there should be a grading system for all Reef2Reef vendors. They should be held responsible and accountable for their transactions. If not, then they should be banned from selling on this forum.

And yup, that's why I always ask for pics of what I'm getting. It's just too mind boggling to throw money one way and hope you get what you expect for. There really is no reason to not get wysiwyg pieces nowadays. It all comes down to business practices in the end.
Glad I never had to deal with booger sized pieces, lol!

My suggestion in a previous post was that they post WYSIWYG pictures with a section of 1/2" frag rack to certify size. We all can relate well to that grid and if they won't do that it would make the deal not reliable.
I see no reason quality vendors do not jump on that ban wagon which forces the others to play fair or loose. If I were a legit vendor of coral I would want to push that envelope.
Cheater vendors are not just cheating customers they are cheating legit vendors of business, and hurting the reputation of the whole industry.

Whoa! I should hope you left feedback on that vendor. Not a smear campaign but something to let others know what to expect. I've seen some small frags but that is prob the worst. I'm ok with small frags as long as they make it in my tank and grow out to something nice if the price is right. If its a nice chunk I'm usually willing to pay a bit more. If I pay top dollar I expect something nice and a moderate size.

I think you put it perfectly. Public feedback is the best way to fix this problem. State the facts show the proof. All too often it turns into a fiasco and the poor coral quality or shipping quality is forgotten.

wow that booger of a booga needs its own "Now this is a booga "thread I'm sorry to hear about your lose Wesley I'd be pretty upset if that happened to me I always use 1rule when I do any type of transaction treat people how you would wanna be treated. If these vendors followed that concept I think there would be a lot more happy reefers. A worthy contribution. That is indeed the epitome of the thread topic at hand. Luckily there's so much spillover to hobbyist sale ads that it should, if it hasn't already, raise the standard to what's considered a respectable frag. There's also some solid vendors on here that sell some chunky pieces.

Well, if I know I'm getting a booger size frag for a booger price... I'm cool with it. Only way I can afford to get some of these pieces. Kinda cool growing it out from nothing as well.

Lets look at this logically! It's a Coral is grown it's clipped and sold for hundreds and 1,000's is kind of a joke really.
Things happen in a reef tank and down the drain goes all the not so booger size coin spent on all of them!! Lets look at it this way!!
It's like placing a few 100 dollar bills in the toilet blindfolding someone and telling them "O.K. I'm gonna flush you cant see but try to grab out the 100's as they spin down the bowl out of reach"
Back in 1998 if I tried to sell a frag for 40.00 I was a Jerk 20.00 was going rate for a 1"+ size frag!
It's sort of out of control selling chips chips of corals but as long as someone is paying they will continue to be sold. Funny thing is if you look around most of the chips are what's coming in from week to week in vendors shipments you just have to look at all the vendors. I've seen full colonies on one site and other sites that same coral chopped up and is selling frags as chips for 10x the price of the full colony on a competitors website.

I don't understand why reefers/vendors sell small-micro size chalices, obviously they are trying to squeeze out as much as they can from the colony they have. But seriously, if a customer pays top dollar, and I did for the Tangerine Dreams frag, they should be given a nice chunky frag.
Now, I didn't pay this vendor $$$ and wished that the chalice frag would be a reasonable size, he actually posted a WYSIWYG picture. That is what I based by conclusion on.
The couple of hundred dollars I was squeezed out of is nothing compared to the hundreds if not thousands of dollars I would have spent on his corals for the next xxx years that I would be reefing.
Booger sized pieces aren't worth it, not even if I was given the piece for free.
The care and time it would take to grow out a chalice the size of a grain of rice is difficult. I have heard of eyeless chalice frags surviving, but something so tiny without an eye has a 0% chance of surviving.
If the TD were still alive today, it would have taken years for that frag to grow to a acceptable size.

Seems like all chalice frags are now this size, especially the high end ones. I've only had 1 live to become a colony so I won't buy frags this size anymore. Its too bad this happens, the survival rate for the coral seems to be so low when they are miniscule frags.

That's really not very good to hear. I hope you contacted the seller with that, gave him or her a chance to make things right, but if all else fails shared your experience. I'm vp of my local reef club and do not like to see smear campaigns against businesses as we need them but it is very important to let others know what happend. Like Ritchie T stated sometimes quality is forgotten in the frenzy of money and business.

True no one needs that small a frag and fragging Zoas is not a good idea anyway due to the toxins Zoas and Palys can release ... Just wrote a long article on fragging that will appear in the next issue of Marine Habitat Magazine (UK) so unfortunately I cannot share it here as it was written for the magazine, but I will be starting a blog there on their online magazine and I will be adding articles to the reef2reef library now that the Book is written I will have more time to add articles to the Library.
