I’d be curious about earthquake fortification for larger aquariums. Like, I strap my water heater in SoCal..., we have to to be in code. What about large reefs? Does anyone do anything to mount the glass portion to the wall somehow. I haven’t see anything about this.

... it was a 6.4 out in Ridgecrest, Kern County. I didn’t even realize it until I saw the dining table light swaying lol (my parrots did act funny briefly). I live in Whittier btw. Our last CA 6+ shaker was 1999 (if I caught all the news updates correctly).

Growing in SoCal, my 180G is an acrylic tank to (hopefully) better withstand the stress of a shaker.

... darn, I forgot to run out the door flailing my arms in panic.

LOL, yeah, I guess when you've grown up out here you get kind of jaded about the little ticklers. This was my one day to sleep in and I thought it was the dogs going crazy in the water bowl. But then they started barking. So then I'm thinking how are the dogs drinking and barking at the same time, and why are they nudging me. So I open my eyes and no dogs. What the.......I must need more sleep, I feel dizzy........Now the brain kicks in and it hits me what's going on. Fish tank is sloshing, pools sloshing, and the dogs won't shut up. Yup, good morning California style. Happy Fourth of July everyone!

funny story: i was living as an exchange student in kyoto, japan when the ‘95 kobe quake hit. wasn’t too long before i snuck a 15-20G tank into my dorm (i don’t remember the exact size but i love furoshiki, hee-hee). it was a great freshwater tank that i wasn’t supposed to have in the dorm hehe.

the morning the earthquake hit, i jumped out of bed** and leapt to the tank to brace it cuz my first thoughts were “if this tank leaks, i’m in sooo much trouble!!” ;Wideyed;Hilarious


** actually on the floor in a futon on a tatami mat.

My son lives in Ridgecrest. No damage to his house, but some damage to his 55 gallon FW tank. He's got 20 gallons of water on the floor and he had to move his fish in his 10 gallon QT tank. Sounds like a mess.

@NotASpammerDude True but there is not much else you can do other than be prepared which I am. Not being prepared would be foolish. Much like living in tornado prone areas, Can't stop them. Unfortunately earthquakes don't come with warning systems...YET. Here's to hoping they will master that soon.

My partners mom is in town so we gave up our room for her. Woke up wondering why the couch was shaking and saw our vase of flowers shaking before I realized what it was. Luckily no damage to anything, think we were far enough away to only get a little shake.

sorry to hear that! i heard the power’s out in some areas too. sounds like family is okay. [thumbs up]

i keep a 5 gallon bucket filled with clean shop towels close to the tank as emergency standby equipment (among with battery operated air pumps & fish net)

Yeah. A lot stronger here in Orange County, California. My aquariums only did a bit of wave making. The lights were swinging though.

i was home for this one, turned halfway through to look at the tank and it was sloshing side to side pretty good. some water made it over the sides, but nothing too bad.

did made me think i might want to try to secure the tank a little better. a 7.0 on the san andreas would probably knock it over (although that'd probably be semi down the list on issues)

definitely stronger here in whittier than yesterday ... tank sloshed a bit ... that was weird to see. not sure is usgs has settled on calling it a 7.1.

my parrot started fluttering her wings in agitation seconds before i realized what it was ... a very long slow roll but it’s almost like i could feel the crest of the seismic wave lifting me & everything up . (O__o)’
