BTW Mother Nature adjusts in every state and country...you don’t wait for it and you don’t see it coming. My new set up got it's first test and no problems! Funny as I was putting it together a few weeks ago I thought about quakes. Rubber mat under the tank makes for great grip on the stand. The cats slept through it - lazy jerks! My rock reef didn't move a bit!

i keep a 5 gallon bucket filled with clean shop towels close to the tank as emergency standby equipment (among with battery operated air pumps & fish net)

I'm an ex police officer too. I think it's unfair to judge everyone by that. I will say I have seen some stupid things done by officers. It just happens to make the news because of body cams and YouTube if you are a cop. Not many other professions get their bad days and screw ups filmed while at work. Please be kind. I'm coming from the point of view of watching people who live next to a river, can't get insurance and get flooded out every few years. Then go crying for help so they can stay put and get flooded out again. I just think folks need to accept the financial responsibility for their decisions they make which includes where they live. Maybe that comes from a law enforcement background and seeing folks claiming their a victim because of decisions they make. Sorry if you think that's dumb.

There's no such thing as "no risk and no downsides" to a particular geographic choice.

California - Earthquakes, wildfires, mudslides, and epic droughts.
SouthEast - Hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms.
NorthEast - tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms.
MidWest - tornadoes, massive (but infrequent) earthquakes, droughts, ice storms, blizzards.
Pacific Northwest - earthquakes, blizzards, and the existential risk of an apocalyptic volcanic eruption and/or gigantic tsunami.

I didn't cover all possibilities, but you get the idea.

I don't disagree but it seems we have evolved to a society that often believes they can throw caution to the wind, do whatever they want and someone else will make it better for them. I've always tried to take responsibility for my decisions and plan for the the bad things that may happen.

That's rather admirable, and I don't particularly agree with our societal choice of allowing development in the flood plains of rivers, but OTOH, there's not a whole lot you can do as far as preparation to prevent property damage from these types of events. That's a bit different than making preparations to prevent loss-of-life, such as tornado shelters and earthquake early warning systems.

I am happy here and haven't found anywhere I like better. I expect that is how you feel about California.
I would have loved to see Northern California but we were only free on weekends and it was just to far away for 4 guys in a rental car.

We have flash floods here. FEMA made everyone move out of flash flood zones in order to receive assistance. Many properties owned for generations became worthless. Whole towns were moved in some cases.
That's all I have to say about that.

That maybe true involving society, but nothing related to geographical location.

Think about it as an American as a whole.

IF these areas you speak of were not inhabited, we would have no crops, no manufacturing, no FOOD.... etc.
Everyone would be crunched in your neighborhood.

The fact that all areas of this water filled rock we live upon has natural disasters everywhere and we need to pull together for each other to continue to prosper, even if a few are needing
"handouts". For some, it just hits at hard times, some its all insurance...
That is what our natural disaster programs are for. Insurance companies are totally scamming the areas hit, or lagging on helping in a timely manner. Lots of areas are not wealthy to begin with and waiting isn't an option to survive.

You honestly think everyone who lives in a disaster zone wants handouts? You are talking about a very small group of people.

As one that leans more right, I still see the reality. I've lived in SoCal, midwest, east coast. I've been through earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods. Tsunamis in tropical areas. It's amazing to watch people of different philosophies and backgrounds pull together during these times.

As we celebrate how great a country this is on this July 4th holiday weekend, just remember that you are on your own (despite the fact that you paid taxes) and that your fellow Americans couldn’t care much less about you, apparently.

Also, when we were dumping billions of dollars to help Texas, Louisiana, and Florida Americans recover from hurricanes it was A-OK, but as soon as California Americans suffer a natural disaster, it’s “THEY are on their own”.

I really don't understand the attitude people have. Just because a state doesn't align with you politically, doesn't mean it's not part of the country.

People sure love hate California but still seem to enjoy all things that have come out of it.
