The Gyre kicked the MP40 in the nads, this is what they've got to do to attempt to stay competitive. Considering that one 50w Gyre can still replace TWO MP40... well, you do the math.

I'm so glad someone broke the chokehold EcoTech had on the reef community. I have zero issue with charging what the market will allow, but they used their patents to keep the price unnecessarily high. :bigsmile:

Jebao RW series paired with apex connectivity definitely took its toll on Vortech sales. Now they have to get competitive with their pricing.

Tim won't hint to us, but many of us are speculating something new on the horizon. He did confirm the price drop is permanent and OCONUS should expect a MP40 price drop as well. (Straight from the horse's mouth). Also, no plans for a MP10 price drop as of now.

P.S. Watch for more EcoTech presence here on R2R. I've been invited to be a personal liaison for EcoTech when Tim gets things lined up.

Totally agree. And I wouldn't be surprised if Ecotech already has that in the works.

I am sure that Maxspect has a 10 Year Patent on their Pump just like Ecotech has the Patent on theirs so it cannot be copied.

Otherwise everyone would have made their own version the Vortech a long time ago.

I dont know if that gyre design is patented. If yes then I doubt Ecotech can make anything similar.

I am sure it is patented.

They would be very very foolish not to as it is a Gold Mine for Maxspect right now.

I don't know anything about how patents actually work, but I would find it hard to believe that no one else would be able to make a horizontally oriented pump like that. Obviously they couldn't call it the Gyre, but I would think they'd be able to do something of their own design? Any patent lawyers on these forums??

I've had my vortech for a few years now and it was worth every penny. Twice I've been without power for 4-5 days and my vortech with a battery back up was the only thing that kept my tank alive while others around me were losing everything. I've just ordered an rw-8 so we'll see how it compares.

Why do you find it hard to believe?

I guess I didn't explain myself very well. What I meant was that a patent doesn't guarantee you a monopoly. It has to be specific to just one strictly defined thing otherwise it would create monopolies easily. For example, the patent on the gyre pumps doesn't read "no one else can make a pump that causes this type of flow pattern of water" That would be far too broad and would prevent any chance of competition. My point is that someone else could still invent something that accomplishes the same thing, but in a slightly different way so you can't be accused of being a copy cat. Does that make any sense?
What I find hard to believe is assumption that the gyre pump patent would prevent another company from making a pump that sort of does the same thing, but in a different way. (For example, Vortech and Tunzes. They basically do the same thing, but they look different and operate a little differently). If someone is smart enough to figure out how to design a pump that is like a hybrid vortech-gyre without violating anyone's patent, then that person could potentially get rich.
For the sake of conversation it would be interesting now to see how exactly the patent on that pump is defined (assuming it has one already).

We will see when the Gyre XF130 comes out at a less expensive price than the MP10! More people might buy it for that reason alone.

Personally, I love my vortech but it doesn't give me the amount of flow that the Gyre does and it's a whole lot less expensive than having the multiple vortechs it takes to achieve the same flow.
