Ecotech Vortech MP-40 - Huge Price Drop Announced Today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not huge enough. I would never pay that much for em. So glad the gyre came out. I've had WP-40's otherwise and they have performed really well and held up over time. I don't know how the people at Ecotech sleep at night knowing how bad they have been ripping people off for years. I wouldn't buy their stuff on that principle alone. Ridiculous.

Ecotech is not a Rip Off.

People have been buying them for like 10 Years.

If they were such a Rip Off people wouldn't be buying them.

Don't be a Hater.

P.S. I cannot afford Ecotech either but I do not say they are a Rip Off because I cannot afford them like so many others do.

Hopefully these gyres hold up long term. I do enjoy the fact that my Ecotech pumps are extremely reliable (owned are continually ran for about 10 years) but IF it were to fail, the motor is still outside of the tank where it will do no harm. Anyone remember those Seio pumps?

Never heard of Seio.

What happened with them?

After reading this thread all night it made me think I should try running just the gyre and see what the flow is like. I'm becoming a believer now. I turned off my vortechs and ran the gyre through various power settings and such and the flow seemed to be better, even at lower speeds. I'm turning my vortechs off for a few days and seeing what kind of response I get from the corals and such. I may not need the MP40s after all.
This type of flow seems much more natural than what we've all previously been able to achieve with a power head.

They are a rip off lol. Plain and simple. Just because they work don't mean they aren't grossly overpriced. They just didnt have any competition. This is the old seio pumps. I remember them well lol.

I didn't think that they were that awful, but they were if ran like pictured above. I ran mine the other way --- right side of the picture. The left was the MJ with the sureflow.

I tried them. I remember when people first took model boat propellers and started replacing the impellers on powerheads. I tried to look up some old forum threads but can't find the pics. I was watching a movie the other day with the old paddle wheel steamships. I can see where the gyre makers got their ideas from.

I believe r2r has a minimal post count to use the buy/sell forum. Just to keep people from joining to sell something I'm sure.

I have been a hard core ecotech guy for years.... The way the rock work is in my 50 cube makes it difficult to get flow all over the tank. Either I have to run them too high to get the dead spots and that disturbs the corals or too low which is not enough for the coral... I haven't been able to find the sweet spot with the MPs. I saw the gyre in action on a couple of different occasions and it is pretty impressive. The only issue I had was getting the XF150 because it would basically kick the water out of my tank. I already preordered the xf130 from marine depot. If it works just like the XF150 does then it will be very bennificial for my system. I can get constant flow with out any dead spots and at the same time not have to blast the corals with too much flow. The only thing I am nervous about is the longevity of the pump. Ecotechs will run for years and years as long as you do proper maintenance on them. Also another thing to remember about the ecotechs that no one has mentioned is that the pump is on the outside of the tank. That means the only heat you are introducing to your system is from the friction of water and not the pump motor itself. For the guys that have smaller tanks and are not running chillers that is is something to think about.

You do bring up a good point about heat and a small tank, I will have to see what it does. I'll be preordering a Gyre XF130 here soon. Been using Vortechs for years, still like it have no real complaints but If I can get more even flow in my tank I'm all about it. Won't be getting rid of my Vortech though, can easily be used in another tank somewhere. Price drop is good though.

I have been waiting for years for Vortechs to come down in price. Maybe now I can get a couple of used MP40s at a decent price. In a few years I might just buy a used Gyre 130 or something EcoTech comes out with. Who knows. I'm just glad that there is more competition in the submersible powerhead market.

can you dial down %age of power on the mp40s like you can on the gyres?

Yes, and when hooked up to the APEX can do even more.

Right now, mine are at 56% in pulse mode, at midnight they will go to constant, at 27%
