Ecotech Vortech MP-40 - Huge Price Drop Announced Today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be sticking with my Vortechs. Currently have 4 MP10s (( used to have 6, but sold 2 that were part of my 40 breeder, which I took down )). Those 4 are at least 4 years old, with 2 being at least 5 years old. I clean them once in a while (( should be better about this )), and that is it, they have been working great since day 1.

Have 2 MP40s on my new 210, with them hooked up to my APEX, I am so very pleased. Will either get 2 more 40s, or put 2 10s on the back wall (( will test with my current ones if they will stay put or not, conflicting reports )). This price drop just might make me get 2 40s.

I know a bunch of people that have been using Vortechs for Years (And Loved them too) but Sold them all and switched once this Pump came out.

That says a lot.

Hm. I was never a fan of the mp40's (and I own a pair of originals that remain dry sitting in a box) but some people just like to follow trends or "try new things"....doesn't say anything about the old pumps or the new pumps if that's the case.

The Gyre seems very large.

Doesn't the thought of running 8 pumps instead of 2 make a little less sense though?

For others with the randomness not being available...The gyre also has a forward and reverse mode to vary the water direction a bit....I have found that the reverse mode doesn't work that great, but if you alternated them it would help with the random flow people are looking for...but again I wouldn't spend 1200 dollars on something I could achieve for 600, I could put one on one side horizontal and on the adjacent edge vertical....can't get more random than that..IMO though

The Gyre FX-130 is only 35w and rated for tanks up 100g. Smaller foot print from the FX-150. I plan on using it on my 40B :)

I've had my vortech for a few years now and it was worth every penny. Twice I've been without power for 4-5 days and my vortech with a battery back up was the only thing that kept my tank alive while others around me were losing everything. I've just ordered an rw-8 so we'll see how it compares.

The Gyre will have a Back Up Battery available soon.

with only a 35-60$ price difference, doesnt it make more sense to just get the 150?

Not for a smaller tank.

I might get the 130 with the restricter (They are going to have an adapter to shut off Half the Power Head for Smaller Tanks).

A heavy-duty extension cord plus a $50 (800-watt) inverter will run your whole tank (assuming LED's) during an outage from your car's battery. Without some more hardware (or inverter with a transfer switch and a stand-alone battery), of course you have to be there to set it up.

This is a fairly common phenomenon among Ecotech fans. IMO, it's actually a side effect of the fact that these pumps are most effective in a cubic-type space - they have very little reach. To make them work (well) in a long tank, more flow-sources are needed than the stereotypical one or two on the sides. If you can foot the bill, it can work though!

thats what im saying though, i have a smaller tank. 70 gallon. shoudlnt i spend the extra 40 bucks to get the higher rated one and run it on lower power, incase i ever want to upgrade or something. seems way better value

Not huge enough. I would never pay that much for em. So glad the gyre came out. I've had WP-40's otherwise and they have performed really well and held up over time. I don't know how the people at Ecotech sleep at night knowing how bad they have been ripping people off for years. I wouldn't buy their stuff on that principle alone. Ridiculous.

I am a bit older than the average age around here. I have been an aquarist for 30 some odd years. I have been keeping saltwater 23-24 years. I have used, used up, and thrown away lots of different pumps and power heads over the years. I bought my first used mp40 in maybe 2005 or 2006. I had like many have stated resisted because I thought they were way over priced. Now after owning at least 8 at different times (I run a lot of tanks) I will say they are one of the best purchases I have ever made in this hobby. They just work! And run and work and run. If you do have an issue you can replace parts and right back to a longevity workhorse. I have 2 now. One running in a fish only in my base ment and one on a shelf that is probably 6-8 years old and I guarantee I can put it on a tank and fire it up and it will work as it is supposed to.
I have not had a display set up in my living area of my home for about a year now for time and work reasons but am in the gathering stage of a new display.
It will be smaller than I have always had. 70 artisan cadlights. I have looked at the new options as well as some tried and true like tunze but I can not justify buying anything but a vortech. This will be the first time I have ever even bought them new believe it or not.
Of course the issue that I have at the moment as stated is I was all set for 2 new mp10's. now it will make no sense not to spend the extra 14 dollars and buy40's. I am sure everyone will do the same then 10 will either go away or the appropriate price drop will come which in turn will alienate some customer base.
This is a hobby and there are lots of great choices. Everybody wants and needs something different the moral to this story if you have read this far is as in most things you get what you pay for and hard to beat tried and true.
Ecotech!!! Go ahead and do the right thing now and adjust the mp10 accordingly!

Glad to see a price reduction because they were always extremely overpriced IMO. I run 3 MP40's and 1 MP10 on my cube and I am happy with the performance and low profile. My tank is pretty dense with SPS growth so having flow from 4 outlets allows me good water movement without damaging direct flow to corals. I plan on trying a Gyre in my tank eventually but I'm not sure how well I will like it because I fear some of my colonies will get blasted by the flow. Anyway, until Ecotech loses their awesome customer service, or starts making their products cheaply, I will remain a customer of their pumps.

This truely is a huge price drop and may finally be what gets a pair in my 240. I've wanted one since the day they were released but instead have bought cool acros and Zoas ;). My concern is the LFS that stock these. I can think of three that had a large display. With EcoTech having these price fixed they sold them at the same price. On an item like this the profit margin is slim, maybe the LFS made $100-150, on a 40. That just went away. No one will pay the old price at the LFS. So what about them. For that matter BRS, Aqua Cave, DFS are big but owned by a guy or two. Are they losing out?
With years of upper level retail I get MAP pricing as well as fixed pricing. I just don't know how such a price drop on a low margin item gets handled for the retailer
I hope with some sort of kickback I can think of one LFS that has a display with a dozen 40s loose $1k in profits..no good

Believe me that Ecotech will come on the market with something similar than the maxspect pump, is just a matter of time now.
Price drop on the MP40 was a good move but many ppl who were ready to sell them as they had their Gyre for Christmas will think twice.
My advise to those ppl is "your pump is paid for, it ain't eat or drink stick it/them in a box for a backup you never know, don't sell them for $150 or less it ain't worth it"
I have five of them, clean them and stuck them back in their box.
Yes I have a gyre and ordered 4 of the FX130, two for on the back of the DT and two for my frag tanks.

Hopefully these gyres hold up long term. I do enjoy the fact that my Ecotech pumps are extremely reliable (owned are continually ran for about 10 years) but IF it were to fail, the motor is still outside of the tank where it will do no harm. Anyone remember those Seio pumps?

I remember em lol. The real mp40 price drops are in the buy and sell forums. They're going like hot cakes. If I had to have one I'd look there first.

Yet me know how that works out I'm looking to buy something for my 120
