EMERGENCY TANK FAILURE RED SEA REEFER

Thanks everyone. Red Sea called me directly shortly after submitting the ticket and are trying to help. ~3 months out of warranty and they want to honor it with their new model. They weren’t able to tell me that their seem technology has been improved, but did reference various structural improvements to stand and tank construction. To be honest I’m uneasy moving forward with another Red Sea tank, but the customer service and optimism about their new design is weighing strong compared to starting over with another brand and the associated costs/logistics

Have totes on hand and weighing options. Need to better understand timing of
replacement. Tape is holding for now and water level is just high enough for corals and inhabitants when moving things around.

Want to save media in the sump so moving that in tank as well.

Need to make sure heaters and probes are situated so I don’t cook the tank.

Not out of the weeds yet but thankful for being able to turn to this forum for logistical (and honestly emotional) support. I called BRS too, and they answered.

If a mod can fix the title of the thread that would be appreciated as well.

I'm happy that you were able to get through to Red Sea. Also, I am happy that they are doing what they should; replacing the tank.

I understand why you would be uneasy. I've been following this problem for a long time. It was suggested that they (Red Sea) received defective silicon from their supplier and the leaking lot of tanks comes from being assembled with the defective sealant.

If true, I would think that you can relax, as by now, the sealant issue has probably been corrected.

For added piece of mind, now you know what to look for where seam failures are concerned before they happen. Perhaps keep things on hand and ready to go if the replacement tank has the same problem.

No need to even go that route.....Social Media (positive or negative) is a big thing these days....

Imagine if every single person who had issues went to their facebook page and said Don't Buy........
A company's social media page is possibly the worst place to go complain, ironically, because they will simply remove the complaint and nobody will see it. So you have to do the hard work of starting a page and getting the word out to get people to see it.

The unfortunate truth is that Red Sea is holding all the cards here, and they know it. Only by spreading the word on various Reefer social media sites will we put a dent in them, and even then, you're only hitting the people who do research for themselves, which is what, maybe 50% at best?

Regarding media in the sump

In reef triage that's elective material, surface area from the sump does not factor whatsoever in cycle stability/ required to be moved to maintain chemistry or cycling stability

I have instances on file where moving elective substrate killed the setup when relocated, because it had a bunch of clouding detritus inside and that was moved solely bc that sump material was seen as required for stability.

It's not the case, it's safer to move only cleaned off live rocks and all the animals bc that excludes the most waste detritus potential

It's true that moving over fully cleaned sump materials isn't harmful... but it's still optional.

There are other times where gfo packets, or other things like nitrate absorbing materials are repositioned into emergency holding bins and this changes flowpathing/effects on tank chemistry especially combined with reduction in volume/ dilution

Then the lighting hanging right overhead still is to bright for this change in chemistry and bleaching occurs

For sure it's possible to move sump materials but they bear no importance whatsoever in the current setting, handy rule to know for reef triage. Knowing what to value vs not value is so crucial in time and materials mgmnt for emergency reefing.

Not using bottle bac or dosed supports was a big deal in his success, the least customization possible is ironically the safest transfer method for your tank
(Many of those dosers are oxygen consumers and we do not ever ever require more bacteria than what simply hitches over on some live rock)

You will pull through fine I'm sure, you caught this early in time to save the reef life. I too would accept any customer services offered, although maybe not long term.

The handiest part of that thread is the trick of being able to skip cycle move the reef over and over, into more than one final container perhaps, without any losses and without any testing of anything other than temp and salinity. You'll need to move that material more than once, if it's clean material you can easily relocate all of it plus the sump if you'd like several times in a row and you'll never lose anything.
Thank you. I’ll put the marine pure blocks back in the sump then.

How long will they last in a stagnant sump? I suppose I can keep it temp controlled with flow. Would prefer to have those on hand for a full tank transfer.

They all get blocked and posts deleted.

Could you go into more detail on this please? Never heard of this being an issue with these failures. It is always nearly always a poorly designed stand and larger tanks.
Saw someone report before that their parrot fish (approx. 1 pound) was swimming into or near the glass which caused the silicone to separate on a RS Reefer. sometimes these tanks are too small in volume for larger fish causing the erratic water movements and force against the seals. Just trying to see if it is a common occurrence in these failures

Tell them to replace it with a S series with the bracing or give you a refund to go to another company that knows how to build tanks

Seam failure then seam failure on the replacement is unacceptable. The stress, home damages, and losses combined are immeasurable. They should upgrade you or refund you.

I had a small opening to upgrade to the S-series and pay the differential. In the moment, I couldn’t justify giving Red Sea any more money and opted for the originally proposed replacement. Need them to ship ASAP.

If the water movements from a large fish can cause enough force to break aquarium seals, then so would any power head on random flow. Just doesn’t track.

OP here. I can’t believe I’m asking this but it is possible to add a eurobrace to rimless tank for structural reinforcement? I’m questioning rimless tanks in general. Just gathering information to help me figure out next move considering I have a Red Sea G2+ set-up on the way.

Are these the previous versions of g2 or is it the same generation?
The failures in the g1 tanks were in the front low. In other tanks it has been side seams. What a mess you should definitely contact Redsea. Their customer seevice
Should answer quickly. I had this same question.

It is.

Lots of tanks have had problems. Red Sea sells the most tanks so they will have the most report. That said I would consider not buying a second one until they give you a great warranty or an explanation of what happened
