But what if they are no longer carrying the product.

corey

But think about it this way...BRS is a dominant player in the market. If they stop carrying a product or pushing it..it could be the end of that product. And given they have a highly successful competing product at a similar entry point..there are a number of reasons no to continue promoting a competing product.
I made this assessment one page 1. lol

True enough, they could easily cripple the GHL product line if they wanted to. I think they benefit more as a distributor by carrying competing lines.

Whether or not BRS honors the discounted pricing, I will remain a customer. They have done more for our hobby in the past 10 years than most other online retailers combined. Proving and disproving knowledge, tutorials, stocking many different product lines, and even sourcing chemical components to help those of us who couldn't get it easily otherwise.

And yes, it is disappointing to see smaller outfits like Marine Depot getting bought out but I don't think they would have agreed to the merger unless it also benefited them. I don't know how it will all play out having the most well-known names part of the same venture capitol, though I'm hoping it will lead to more hobbyists and eventually lower prices for all.
I am not as concerned with the retail side of purchasing as I am about the information outlet purchasing. MarineDepot served, much in the same capacity as BRS, as a source of information on products, products that BRS doesn't give much info on due to competing interests (GHL controllers for instance). A lot of new hobbyists are watching BRS videos (because they get recommended so much) and buying up the products they showcase, which, in many cases, are their own products (Apex, Ecotech, AquaIllumination). It gives them more market share and reduces the market share of competing products. Only time will tell how that plays out.

Yeah. it is exactly the same reason I sold my Ecotechs. Although they are the marquis name...i dont want them to be the only name.
Sorry, BUT, this is were I disagree with both of you. BRS does not hold that type of power. The Vendor will just simply have to go to another supplier and build from their. Remember, their is @SaltwaterAq and @premiumaquatics .;)

Its up to the other suppliers to choose to move forward.

Dear colleagues,
just a side remark: don‘t forget about us here in Europe! :)
For instance, some might not even consider Neptune as a competidor to GHL here…

Fun and interesting topic :)
Cheers

I know you did and I am not trying to steal your thunder or claim I was the first with the idea. However, it appeared no one was talking about it so I brought it up again Because I think it could be interesting.
Yes, you could just buy it online as suggested. But does that make service aspects more difficult, dealing with a different time zone for ”timely” responses And many other things. Remember Dastaco before they had stateside support? Pacific sun lights? To just name a few. It just can get hairy for the service.

Yea, GHL is much more prevalent across the pond!

Think of this in a macro economic sense. Lets say that BRS has conservatively 50% of the market and they decide to stop selling certain competing product, lets say oh i don't know, dreambox media reactors. I doubt people loyal to BRS are going to go looking for these if they never heard of them before..instead, they are going to buy what BRS is showing. Now Dreambox might have overhead whereas a 50% reducing in sales may bankrupt them. Poof, no more competing products. This is a big reason that most companies want to be in walmart. If you are not in walmart and the related cash flows, its tough to make it.

And i agree, BRS does not have that much DIRECT power...but they have more than enough INFLUENCE to decide winners and losers.

(good debate by the way)

I respectfully disagree, BRS is not just a retail outlet/distributor, they are an information powerhouse and can easily push buyers in the direction they want using that power.

This is we users need to help push and inform the other 2 players. ;)

I like a even playing field.

If you tried to sell your 400,000 house (which represents your life savings) and some clerk accidentally listed it at 40,000..would you be happy 'writing it off' if someone bought it? (Yes, I know there are real estate safe guards..but play along). At what point does taking advantage of an accident hurt real people?
That is a completely different scenario! I’m not for taking from anyone personally like this. I’ve actually brought up to mistakes in prices in this forum and other to sellers on OfferUp etc. but I’m very against big businesses that have for decades been helped by the government while there are many people who have it much worse and have very little if any help.

It starts to hurt real people when the company cannot sustain the accident. Yeah they might lose a couple thousands of dollar if they let this slide but how much do they make profit per year and also some people in this world if they bought these items on sale and the transaction gets cancel they will not shop BRS anymore so therefore they lose out on future profit. I’m not saying it’s okay to go looking/creating these accidents but at what part is it on the company to hold its self responsible?

This country has helped big businesses way to much and they instead need to focus on small businesses

Sucks being at work I wish I was to date with this thread to response faster. I’m off at 5 though lol

Interesting you mention this, I made an order from BRS a few weeks ago and received it overnight. It could be they are starting to stock some stuff on the West Coast.
If it was drop shipped from the supplier then this can happen. Afaik BRS only has the MN warehouse still. Ryan has mentioned they don't want other warehouses.

Oh yippee, a 10x point sale ;Facepalm Hold the phone while I load up my credit cards  (or maybe not).

Where was the Christmas/New Year sale?
BRS never has Christmas or New Year's sales. Ryan gives his employees time off instead.

It wouldn't make sense from a business perspective for BRS to discontinue selling GHL products. This is a well-known brand with a large following, even here in the US.

GHL is tiny here in the States. Their bread and butter is Europe. I bet Neptune barely recognizes them as a competitor here.

Unfortunately, Saltwateraquariums.com likely doesn't have the production budget to compete with BRS on a toe to toe level video-wise. Does PremiumAquatics have a youtube channel?

They do...but does not really compete against BRS. More of a family 'check out what we are doing with my kids' vibe.

@rtparty, I agree that they have a very small presence here. My real question (just for conversation sake, as I have Neptune products) is with BRS being the “only“ stateside resource for them. What does that do for service issues and such. I know it’s not up to BRS to keep someone in business or be their CS support but from a consumer’s point of view, it is nice knowing you can reach out to BRS and get a timely response due to similar holidays, time zone etc.

+100. As aduts we should understand policy and corporation implications from individuals. Ryan 's work has positively impacted the community, for long long time. He is in the same league as Jake, Mike and Sanjay. Whatever we see on the merger side is no different from phone company, big tech or any other random industry in US.
BRS is awesome because of Ryan, Randy and many other individuals whom we know love and support the community.

BRS used to be Ryan, Randy etc and that is what made them good. BRS is no longer Ryan, Randy etc IMO (yes, they are still there, but who is really directing proceedings?). Just because I have lost interest in BRS, doesn't mean that I can't (or don't) respect the individuals who built it up as a company.

Is this a bit like the bogus insurance claims argument? Insurance companies have lots of money so putting in a false claim doesn't hurt anyone? Or is it ok to steal from Walmart as long as you don't steal from a local independent grocery store?

No, they are not the only resource for Neptune. BRS can only sell so many units. I feel Neptune and Ecotech will still fully fulfill their service agreements with the consumer with no issue. BRS is still BRS, Neptune is still Neptune, and Ecotech is still Ecotech, that has not changed. They are simply owned by a acquisition group.

I was going to say the same thing. It is easy to vilify a big, successful company and justify any action against them just because they have more. Because of this logic, I used to have the tag line of 'If at first you dont succeed, blame someone who was successful'

Not sure if people remember, but BRS was a small company just a few years ago.
