How do you guys convince your spouse when upgrading ?

I see all the big tanks and I envy you guys. How do you do it? My wife is already had it with me with just the 20g AIO nano but I want bigger! Spending just 15-30 minutes a day will get me “all you care about is your reef” statements
When buying new fish, coral, equipment or supplies just remember “it was less tan $25 babe.” No matter what you buy or how many...Will keep you out of some trouble

I don't know your situation. A lot of dudes sit around on their butts or play video games then wonder why their wife is always griping lol. I treat my wife like she deserves, make sure all bills are paid, kids are handled, make sure money is in savings, etc. You got to take away all the arguing points.

Mine will try. You don't spend...nope he does, you never...crap he does that to, what about the.... crap that's handled. Then it just switches to that's nice hunny lol.

If your lady is griping about time set your alarm for 5am get up do your maintenance.

This ^^^^^^^^^ It helps tremendously to eliminate all of the arguing points!

My wife knows I will get a 6 foot bigger tank in our new home we bought this past year, but I make it a priority to check off her wants first.....new appliances, new floors, and interior painting just to name a few. I also grocery shop, make dinner, and clean house when I am home and not traveling for work. She works too, we have a 15 month old, and she definitely appreciates my help.

When my wife agreed to an aquarium I showed up with a 210 gallon. After that it was easy to convince her I should spend a few thousand on a nicer, but smaller tank. Now we're looking at a Red Sea or Waterbox peninsula. Basically, you messed up by getting a reasonable size tank to start. Should have gone ridiculous to start so that upgrades going forward seems reasonable

I did that! I went from a 300 down to a 180 and she was tickled. But in three years I got bored, so back up to a 310. It took a few weeks, and new lights and ceiling fan in your living room and she is happy this week

I feel your pain brother. I'm stuck with my 14g AIO lol. My wife bought the first pack of corals for me on my bday a few years back and wanted nothing to do with it. However, the turning point was when I started trading and selling. Once I told her how much I sold a torch for, she started warming up to the idea of reef keeping lol. $$$ is key. Then maybe you can wiggle in the idea of needing stability for your frags in a larger tank.

It’s my wife’s fault I started the hobby 7 years ago. We were talking and I told her I always wanted an aquarium. I never owned one before. I told her I wanted to do a saltwater tank. I was going to do a 29gal bow front and she told me to get a 55g. She actually found the setup used. After she enjoyed watching the fish and coral so much she let me upgrade to a 120g with no issues. BTW I let her name the BTW I have the best wife. and no she is not on R2R lol!

This thread reminds me of the Worlds Shortest Fairy Tale:

World's Shortest Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, a reefer asked a girl 'Will you marry me?' The girl said, 'NO!' And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and went fishing and hunting and played golf a lot and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and passed gas whenever he wanted.
The end

Well you gotta tell us what approach worked for you.

it was a combo of everything. I helped around the house a bunch, Was stern I wanted a new bigger tank, and she just caved in lol

I went to see a tank yesterday, but it wasn’t to our liking. I am on the the search and will be breaking down my Nano.

Luckily he is the one that started my disease. Definitely makes it easier when I want to buy anything!

Get her involved with your aquarium and she will be addicted also. If she likes the hobby the problem would be where to put the bigger display tank! ;)

Exactly! My husband is an enabler. The only reasons I picked up a 125 gallon tank instead of a 500 gallon is because we couldn’t fit it through the door and don’t trust our floor to hold that much weight.

Get her into it, get her a nano tank . When she starts buying frags every week and runs out of space then she will be angling for upgrades, It worked for me , her 20L is now a quarantine tank for our 80DT,40GT,30FT w 40gl basement sumped system lol 20 to 200 gallons in warp speed.

Today my wife invited some of her friends to have dinner and they were asking about my new tank in the living so I heard how she was explaining that is still cycling and growing bacterias to be able to receive fish...
You may not notice, but they hear all you say about your hobbie and thats another way to involve your family.
Very satisfied today with her comment

I had a very similar thing happen! Her friends were over for a little "Girls night," you know, chick flicks, ice cream and popcorn lol. I just hung out in our bedroom but I came out a few times to grab some water and they were all staring at the tank and she was explaining things to them. I was thinking in my head, "wow, she does listen to my crazy fish stuff." lol

tell your wife that it's a tax write-off and that you will be saving thousands of dollars by having it a write off, then tell her that all the savings you'll be having you'll add to your children's college fund. If that doesn't work tell her you have these water flowers,,just for her and show her the pictures that I'm posting here.
