Hydros and BRS?

Not surprised. It was pretty suspicious when they did not preview the Maven, Minnow, Launch, etc or even give them coming soon placeholders on their website. I don't like this decision, and it makes me more likely to shop elsewhere (e.g. Premium Aquatics). However I understand this as a business decision-only sell your in-house brand for increased overall profit-and I can't hate on them for making that choice.

I will say that I recently set up a new tank which is running all Hydros for control (X4, Wave Engine, XP8) and I like it much better so far. I never really had any trouble with my old Apex (now sitting in a box but will probably be repurposed for my Berghia system), but I have so far found the Hydros easier to program and use, and certainly the connectors as well as aesthetics are much more to my liking. I can understand why Aperture does not want to give Hydros any more exposure, I think many people would find Hydros more appealing unless they already have an investment in the Apex ecosystem.

Nope all out

Yeah the Launch and Maven both made BRS wake up. Can't ignore those products. And they are trying.

The problem with hydros is that they release new units and gadgets too fast. You buy something now, next year they release the newer version and your unit is obsolete. Its been like this for the past 2-3 years, and I've gotten burned by buying equipment that is "discontinued support" within a few months. But they don't tell you when you buy., and they don't publish on their website everything they will release in the next 1-2-3 years, so you take a chance to buy their equipment.
I really wanted to use Hydros because of the controller redundancy aspect. However other than the control/brain redundancy I find the Hydros has to may outlets that are replicated on one unit to another unit leading to possibly over redundancy or under ultilised outlets. I think if redundancy of the controller is needed, Neptune can probably create a module that allows a second Apex brain to be plugged in that replicates/backsup the function/settings of the working brain and only kicks in if the Apex controller in use fails.

But who would want to pay for a second “backup” brain for their apex?

Which port do you think you would have too many of? You can mix and match the controllers to your needs. The sense port I seem to run out of quickly so it is always good to have a few of those handy since most input devices use that port. The exceptions would be pH/ORP and salinity. I have 23 sense ports in use total.

I

bought the x2 starter, don’t even know what I can connect to it
I also got the x2, and I got a wave engine with gyre. I’ve wanted to try a gyre and w/e for A long time so this is was a nice surprise being on clearance and still In Stock

The X2 is one of the smaller ones but has 2 sense ports and 2 drive ports. The starter kit comes with the controller a wifi power strip a temp sensor and a power supply for the X2. The sense ports are input ports for most input devices except for pH, ORP and salinity probes. The temp sensor will use one if you use it. If you want to do ATO you can get a water level sensor for use on the other and either the Hydros ATO pump or the Hydros simple doser to use on one one of the drive ports for ATO. I prefer the Hydros simple doser since it only dispenses at 43ml a minute and can be used at a farther distance from the tank. I have the Hydros simple doser in the garage with my DI reservoir and the tubing is run up through the attic and down inside a wall to a wall plate then out to the tank. That would leave one drive port and the wifi strip outlets for outputs. If you decide you need more get the controller with the ports you need a command bus cable and at least one terminator. If you get a controller that comes with a power supply that connects to a port other than a command bus port remove the power supply that came with the X2 since you cannot use them with another source of power but the other controller will have no issue supplying power to other controllers that don't have their on source of power.

Also you may want to join the Hydros facebook group and the Hydros forum. Welcome to the Hydros group.

Thanks for this clarification, it’s helpful. Definitely going to try and read up on it and watch some videos.

I did just buy a Red Sea ATO, ReefMat, sicce sdc pump, and kessil light - think any of those will connect to the ports? Also do you think this can work as a replacement to a inkbird (I didn’t buy that yet, but have two heaters), or still go buy one?
