Hydros and BRS?

Was planning on nabbing a Trident NP tomorrow since I'm already so deep in the Neptune Apex ecosystem....this has me a bit hesitant about the long term viability of continuing to invest.

In apex?

If the speculations and posturing in this thread are even remotely true, apex will be the only game in town.

I agree I was going to get one to and rumor is it’s all a big money grab before filing for bankruptcy in July , kinda sucks I wanted it but I guess I’m going to have to start migrating everything to hydros if they do go belly up

All this means is that BRS will not be carrying Hydros. BRS has not purchased Hydros and Hydros is still being manufactured it will simply no longer be at BRS. We still have the full Hydros line and are happy to see less competition.

I bought the Kraken last week at full price. Called BRS this morning and said i wanted to return and re purchase it. The rep was eager to give me the price difference on my entire hydros order. I got rewards points for over $280.00. I'll spend that on supplies then move on to another online retailer. I think I'm done with BRS.

I honestly don’t know if this will end up being a net ‘win’ for Aperture overall in the long run, hard to guess. But I agree it will benefit non-BRS vendors at least in the short term. I don’t “hate” BRS now and I certainly won’t “boycott” them, but if they choose not to carry a product line I’m interested in, it moves them down on the list of my preferred etailers. And of course they directly lose sales on any Hydros add ons I buy down the line.

That’s pretty awesome, Brs Has always had great customer service.

If anything brs not carrying hydros is a good thing as it makes brs less of a monopoly in our small hobby leaving room for other retailers to survive and thrive possibly

Yeah, you absolutely shouldn't do business with a company that was happy to give you the discounted price on items you already bought which they definitely didn't have to do.

That's sort of my point. Everyone is reading too much into this.

It seems like market share is being leveraged for bargaining power to negotiate margins. I don't think speculation helps matters though.

Maybe you'll see more sales, but I'm betting that brs is projecting that their brand is widespread enough that when competitors products aren't on their site, customers will opt for [insert brs sales item here] instead.

From a hobbyists perspective, I don't understand why we feel like we're obligated to defend companies that profit off us. It's simply transactional, there shouldn't be any implied loyalty.

If a hobbyists wants to purchase an apex, you'd hope they would shop around for the best price. And if someone wants GHL, well, they won't be purchasing from brs. Haha

My business brain says this makes all the sense in the world for Aperture. Apple doesn't sell Android phones on their website. So we can't be surprised they don't want to sell Hydros and GHL controllers. They would be foolish to not hype their own products and hide the rest. Logically I think they also probably begin discontinuing redundant products. Still weird to me that they have Ecotech, Neptune and AI all selling competing lights and pumps. They need to be careful though, solid messaging is incredibly important or they risk spooking their current users.....like me hahaha

My heart still says this sucks.

Thanks for this clarification, it’s helpful. Definitely going to try and read up on it and watch some videos.

I did just buy a Red Sea ATO, ReefMat, sicce sdc pump, and kessil light - think any of those will connect to the ports? Also do you think this can work as a replacement to a inkbird (I didn’t buy that yet, but have two heaters), or still go buy one?
The Sicce SDC can be controlled within the Hydros without any wired connection but the communication is limited to how many command in a given time on the Sicce cloud since that is the way they communicate. I have the Sicce SDC 3.0 and control it with my Hydros collective. The X2 will control it. Each controller or collective is allowed 8 wifi devices. The Sicce would become one of those. I am not familiar with any of the other things you mentioned since I don't have any of those. On Kessil lights you can plug them into the wifi outlet to power them on or off. If they have a 0-10v input the can be controlled with a Hydros controller with 0-10v outputs which I think are wave engine v2 and X4 at this time. As for heaters I did power them from a wifi power strip before getting the XP8 but even on the XP8 I used heaters that had their own thermostat internal and I set them about 3 degrees above the 77.5 degrees I have the Hydros set to. I do that as a backup off. For heaters use 2 and always have a backup off for them. I have my two heaters on different outlet on the XP8 and they were on 2 different outlets on a wifi power strip when I used that. I set one to come on .1 degree lower than the other and set both to go off at the same temp. So if it is not too cold one will not get much use. You can also go with the InkBird and use the Hydros as a backup off. There are quite a few that do that. If you have a ATO then that would free up one of the sense ports for something else like a leak detectors. Hydros has two of them one is a point leak detector and the other is a rope type leak detector. So you might keep that in mind unless you have another use. The drive ports are 12v DC outputs and Hydros has small pumps and solenoids that can be powered using them. So you could always use the with a couple of simple dosers if you are going to dose something.

BRS has all Hydros on clearance. Everything selling fast. IS Hydros going under or just BRS discontinuing?
I don't know, something is going on, BRS is going against Hydros stright Map policy which you can't discount their products, and the few items they have almost sold out, I think BRS is going to concentrate more on Apex now.

BRS has been selling Hydros for years. APPLE NEVER SOLD ANDROID. Just imagine the review Thomas would give if they let him.... Never once did BRS reccomend Hydros. But they sold it...Until Now!

MAP needs to be a thing of the past as it sucks for consumers but that’s for another discussion.

I think competing vendors would be less concerned that there is one less GHL/Hydros vendor and more concerned that they will cut everyone else out of Ecotech, AI, and Neptune products.

This might clear things up for you.

x5. I’m leaning towards adapting hydros so this is a turn off. Not a fan of BRS current trajectory.
x6

Seems like a very anticompetitive move. The hobby doesn’t need that. Who’ll get kicked out next? Sicce? If BRS’s only goal is to act as a distribution channel for their holding company’s products I see little value in shopping with them.

Just another reason to support my LFS, or SWA.com. The few times I’ve used BRS it took days just to ship the order.
