Mp10 sounds like a 2 stroke

So, I’ve bought a second hand mp10 with a new wet side. But the wet side is making a ticking/rattling sound which increases on higher output. Does it need to break in or anything I can do? I tried turning and moving the wet side but no difference.

i got screwed once when i bought an old mp10.

turns out the dryside itself was FUBAR and vibrated bad even with a brand new wetside (the old one was swollen with rust, prob soaked with vinegar).

with all the replacement parts i essentially paid 80$ for the powersupply...

try running your dryside by itself and feel for vibration.

a properly running mp10 dry side should just have a tiny hum to it even at full speed and should have zero vibrations.

I'm in the same boat, dry side was screwed and the power supply not original also not the right specs (1.68a instead of 1.5) can that be the problem?

Regarding the dry side I've bought a new one and is quiet without wet side attached

also do not clean your wet side with vinegar.

it seems the acetic acid can leach through certain plastics (like the mp10 wetside...) and rust it from the inside. this will make the magnet cage swell up and crack open.

power supply Amp rating is not the problem. the higher number means it can handle giving that much current, not how much it will force through the pump. the pump will take what it needs and no more.

try rotating your wetside propeller by hand, even without the cage on and see if it makes any sounds or catches on anything.

How thick is your glass? I know with thinner glass there is a thin rubber spacer that goes between the glass and the dry side. Might be worth looking into.

The new wetsides do have a break-in period according to Ecotech, and they come with some silicone grease pre-applied to help with that, but mine never sounded that bad.

my replacement dryside actually came with a vibration as well. after a few months of back and forth with ecotech i was sent another replacement dryside. this time it was good.

Thanks for the advice about not using vinegar, I tried it by hand but feels like the black part underneath the impeller is grinding the white part as you can see on this photo

It's a Red Sea reefer 170 with 8mm glass on the sides according to the mp10 manual the spacer is only needed on 3 and 5mm glass if im correct?

can you clean it up and see if anything is stuck to the ceramic surfaces? they should be fairly smooth and become even smoother as they break in.

you could try using high grit sandpaper (ive used 800 -1000grit) just to smooth them out a bit more.

i'd recommend getting some of this stuff to grease up the shaft and ceramic plates whenver you clean it. they say you don't have to but it helps dampen any grinding sounds i find.

That is the new wetside? I would email Ecotech and show them that picture. They will probably do nothing and just make you purchase another wetside because their customer service is awful, but I would at least give it a try.

I have had the same problems with my MP10; I have now bought two new wetsides in the past year for my 2 MP10 at are approximately 18 months old.

It could also be a bad bearing in the dry side, which is what Ecotech told me was my problem (but I was able to figure out that the noise went away when I bought a new wetside).

If you remove the wet side, do you still have the 2 stroke sound?

I'm betting it's the dry side, and the bearing is shot.

Nothing stuck to the ceramic surfaces, You mean grinding the black part?
