Prices going up again?

I got out of reefing for about 5 years and just now back into it. So many companies have been absorbed into other companies like Marine Depot. I also heard that Ecotech was bought out by BRS! :o

Yes, but more of a merger. Ecotech Marine, BRS, Aqua Illumination, Neptune Systems, and Leap (reptile stuff) are now all part of the same company. Aperture Pet and Life.

Well it'll be interesting to see where the prices land. Most of these brands are more money than I'm willing to spend anyway and so I find other ways to do the hobby.

And I do kinda get the point about buying knockoff products hurting the prices. But I haven't seen anything that more than knocks off the form factor, nobody is making a real copy of a Radion or Vortech. These are light and pumps, Its not rocket science.

I was thinking about adding another Nero (been looking at the Nero 5 and 7) to my tank. If the prices are going up again, maybe it’s time to consider trying one of those Jebao wavemakers.
I have 2 of the mlw 30’s in my frag tank and they move some serious water! Getting them onto the app and wifi was a complete pita though.

Other factors??? You mean greed from the company who’s cornering the market and giving small lfs ridiculous wholesale prices that leave a tiny profit margin? I avoid this company like the plague!
Cough cough brs

There are so many better options especially for lighting then Radions. Orpheks, reefi, and t5 can grow coral the same if not better than Radions and cost way less. People need to stop thinking the only way you can have successful sps tank is with Radions lights, that simply is not true. As for return pumps Reef octopus and sicce are great alternatives to Cors and Vectra. As for wave pumps it’s hard to beat the vortechs but now with the price increase there’s no way people will shell out 1000 for two mp40s that’s just insane. I really hope people start to thinking about buying products outside of aperture products because they will continue to raise prices and the only way to combat this is to boycott them. They will continue to ruin this hobby and make it unaffordable for
hobbyist. We already pay insane amount for shipping, salt, fish and coral prices I think we can put our foot down on these insane equipment prices for aperture. Please don’t come at me with the inflation and R&D I understand, but no one raises their prices as often as aperture does. Rant over

There are just so many better options out there for less money I dont know why people still buy this overpriced crap.
because people who are sponsored by these companies on YouTube and other social media platforms make it out like these products are the only option if you want a successful reef tank

I lobe my jebaos, if you are a halfway decent DIYer you can hook them up to different controllers. But I use the wifi smart ones and jebao recently overhauled the app so it's been pretty dope.

What I will say is, the price is so dang low, its easy to have backups which has been awesome for maintenance, I just swap them out and clean at my leisure.

One big thing though, is they are overpowered, i have a 75 G display, went with the recomended 60-100 G ones, and they are way too strong. I have the gyre in still, but have to run it max 40% the rest of mine are suggested for 40gal. Due to this I have 3 oversized pumps I use for salt mixing and random utility.

Not gonna lie, the no cord thing is pretty cool, but at the sacrifice of being able to angle them It's not for me, unless I ran extra undersized ones and had them on something like a hydros wave engine.

I agree I have 2 mp40s on my tank they are great but when they die one day I will not be replacing them with new mps. I will most definitely go in a different direction.

Yes. On September 8th, AI, Ecotech, and Neptune products will all increase in price due to inflation and other factors. This was communicated to retailers who sell those products.

It's the 8th and the MP40 price is the same on BRS (so far).

There are so many great points in this thread. And I'm glad to see that the line between marketing and hobbyist is starting to come into focus.

Hobbyist definitely need to try and unify and hold strong to our values as hobbyist. Shake our heads and rid ourselves from the trance we've been in... hypnotized by marketing "success can only be achieved by spending more".

So many times, we hobbyist are participating in practices that are in direct contradiction of our own values, desires and needs. WHY?

I believe this trend will be continuous and questions at what point do we " Have enough" and seek other products or hobbies.

Your comment helped me to realize that I tend to "leave" a hobby because I've gotten to a point where the cost to take it to the next level outweighs my interest.

This can happen really fast with reefing. I have been priced out of most upgrades and 90% of my equipment is second hand (Used 2 year old waterbox, apex, kh director, dosing pumps, mp40, neptune gro, sump, display lighting, dosing containers, skimmmer). I can't buy anything from Ecotech new, AI, or Apex new.

You dont want to join their $700-$1000 per item club ?

Have you seen these. It's a pretty cool option for the Vortechs to be able to angle them.

As far as the price increase itd getting crazy. It's not gonna stop until we stop buying them. The tough thing is that there's honestly not another good option to replace the Vortechs imo. In my tank I have them on the back wall and don't want any cords, so it's either pay up or have cords.
