You can't get consumers to work as a single bloc. Manufacturers know this. I highly doubt any backlash that will come as a result of this, will last.

Exactly. Nothing is getting cheaper in life, let alone in this hobby. Prices will continue to go up year over year. That’s life

In another hobby I have there is a tool that cost about $4000 at one point. There was one company bringing it into the country and setting the price. A guy who knew how to get things made in China contacted the actual factory that made the item and had them make a handful of small changes enough to not infringe on copyright. Slapped his brand on the side, sold it for half the price and was making a healthy profit still. It didn't take long for him to put the other company out of business and open the hobby up.........About 30 brands we use are controlled under 2 companies and right now they are looking like the company with the $4000 tool. Their mark ups are huge and someone at some point is going to find a way to undercut them and the hobby will be better off for it.

While still expensive, there are very good alternatives for ecotech that cost less. Reef Octo, Sicce, Tunze, Etc. They all make a product that doesn't rip off of other manufacturers and costs significantly less than Ecotech. The only issue is the cord in the tank because Ecotech patented that.

If you grew up smoking swisher sweets and drinking southern comfort or Even Williams will wonder how someone can drop 30.00 dollars on a single cigar or spend 200.00 on a nice Scotch. Nether person is wrong. But looking down on swisher sweet smokers and cheap liquor drinker, or complaining about high prices of good Scotch and a good cigar are both wrong. There is a difference from cheap to expensive. I would bet most complaining about high prices don't understand product development cost money, and they are the beneficiary of someone else spending the high dollars. Do you think you would have decent vipaspectra LED lights for 150.00? Or any of the other Chinese boxes? How about cheap DC controllable wave wakers for under a 100.00. Jabo return pump well under 100.00 with a controller?

The development cost of an EcoTech pump has long been paid for at this point. It's not like the pumps have changed significantly in many years. They are charging that much because people will pay that much. Pure and simple. Also most LED development is not done by reef companies. They simply spec out LED's that will match the spectrum they're going for.

I'm not saying I like the increase , but one thing Ecotech does right, in my opinion, is that you get their products (I only use their MP40s) for the same price no matter where you buy them which actually helps the small LFS from being killed by online retailers with smaller overhead.

That is a mIsconception, smoke and mirrors to keep margins and strong arm small shops. Wholesale prices vary by volume and your LFS does low volume compared to online. MAP pricing agreements stipulate advertised prices, a vendor can sell at whatever margin they wish. However, when they do they get threats from the OEM and wholesales prices are held hostage. The problem is that the small shop has no wiggle room one way or the other (they never did), but the large shop doesn’t have to offer a deal they just quote MAP. In a niche market where there is little competition, this drives comparable s prices up as well. Everyone plays the game.

The irony is that companies like BRS that entered the business to buck (no pun, but pun) the system, end up becoming exactly what they professed to be against.

literally the only difference is the app that controls them at that point, which i guess, sure if you wanna pay out the butt for, go ahead. but don't act light the actual light itself (hardware) is any different

Does your diy have the even spread of a xr15 or 30? Does it act like a t5, does it give the same light spectrum to your coral. Does the shimmer look absolutely natural. Can you set up a dusk to dawn, ECT ECT ECT.

Imo, reefing has been highly commercialized. The days of diy promotion are largely gone. Now promotion of companies and their products are what drives the hobby. Though not all bad as far as the innovation that has occured, the trade-off is costly, and making reefing less affordable for the general public. But maybe that is their (companies) goal? To increase prices and have a smaller, wealthier customer base?
